The Party

__________

Connor was very surprised he even convinced Serena to come tonight.

The only time he's ever gotten Serena over to his place was for the greenhouse, and she didn't even come inside.

He suddenly felt nervous, he was hyper aware she'd be in his home. He noticed all the little messes, how his couch pillows weren't neat and orderly like hers.

How his mail was slightly pilling up on his counter. And of course the mess from the party the night before.

He groaned and stretched his arms over his head, rubbing his fingers through his thick dark hair.

Connor didn't want to scare her away, but he wanted to push her. Test her limits. He wanted to make this party as big as he could and see if she'd still come.

It was just in his spirit to try and rock her to her edge, see just how far he could bring her to the brink before her shy personality snapped away to that fiery one.

He smirked and grabbed his phone out of his pocket, sending a side eyed over to Serena's house where he saw her sifting her mail through the large windows

The phone dialed a few times before his best friend picked up, "Deluca! What's going on."

"Hey Josh, so I know I just had a party last night, but I need to throw one today too."

"What? Really again today. What's the occasion."

"No occasion, but it has to be massive. Can you help me with that?" Connor couldn't wipe the smirk off his face.

"You know I can. Won't that neighbor of yours freak out?" Josh chuckled.

"Don't worry I've taken care of that-"

"You sound like a murderer..." Josh cut Connor off laughing.

"I didn't murder her," He rolled his eyes, "Just don't worry about that, invite everyone you know."

"Okay will do, bye!"

"Oh one more thing, make sure Bruce and his friends don't come."

"Why?"

"Just don't invite them, bye."

"Bye."

Connor hung up the phone and stuffed it back in his pocket. Now he needed to straighten up and get the supplies.

The sun was setting, Connor cleaned his house, and four kegs sat under his Island while liquor lined the top.

The pool was on and all the lights outdoors were on as well.

People were already starting to arrive, Connor was searching through every face to see if one of was Serena.

He sent the people he knew were assholes home, and by the time the sun had set completely and the music was blasting; still no Serena.

There was a slight satisfaction in that, knowing he'd won this game, but also an annoying tinge of disappointment.

Josh came running up to him, slinging an arm around his shoulders. Luca did the same to his other side, the two drunk men laughing and shaking him.

"You don't have enough booze in you! I can tell. Drink young one." Luca held a red solo cup to his lips and Connor laughed pushing it away.

"I need to stay somewhat conscious still."

"Whyyyy, you've been annoyingly sober this whole party." Josh chimed.

"And you've been watching this party like a hawk. Not like you!" Luca slurred, all of them yelling slightly over the music.

"I promise, soon I'll-" Connor's words were cut off by a loud cheering sound coming from the the front door. A crowd of people were whistling and howling at something.

The three of the them in the hallway gave each other a look and moved down the hall towards the entrance.

Standing there in the doorway was Serena. Her tense eyes floated across the many people looking at her and finally locked with his gaze.

For a minute Connor forget he was throwing a massive party, he forgot there was anyone else even in the room, besides the two of them.

She was wearing a tight little black outfit. The skirt hugged her round hips and the material rouched around her right hip.

Her top was a bit more complicated, there was a diamond cut out across her upper chest and it was long sleeved. Two black triangles connected at the center of her large breasts and the neckline connected similarly but more off center to her right shoulder.

She was wearing black kitten heals to go with it, her was was blown out and not just brushed through for once, and finally her makeup was done simply. Only sporting a slick cat eyed winged liner, nude lip, and some light brown eyeshadow.

She looked like she should be going out to dinner, not to his shitty party, but she looked drop dead gorgeous. And everyone else noticed this too.

This was the first time he'd actually seen her work with her curves, not hide them.

Connor came back to his senses and noticed how she was squirming under the attention.

Before he could even think, he detached from his friends and moved through the crowd, still holding her gaze.

Once he was in front of her she breathed out a whisper, "you're such an asshole, this is an insanely big party. I hate you so much." An embarrassed pink blush kissed her cheeks when she finally broke his gaze and looked out at everyone.

Her eyes widened and she looked down at herself, then back to the crowd, her chest rising and falling faster. "And I'm insanely over dressed, god I'm not good at this. Why did I come. I hate you-"

"Come with me now." He took her wrist into his hand and pulled her back the way he came through the crowd.

She followed silently, Connor moved past his friends and heard Luca mumble, "holy shit, that's the same neighbor?"

Eventually when they moved to the kitchen everyone resumed their normal drunk activities and stopped staring at Serena.

But Connor could tell by their looks, that the some wanted her, and the others wanted to be her.

He felt an unfamiliar chain tighten around him, he wasn't gonna let anyone touch her.

"What do I do?" She mumbled and leaned against his counter, taking a glance around his house.

Connor grabbed the keg pump and filled a solo cup, "drink this." He turned and handed it to her, "and be fun; I know it's difficult for you."

She glared at him and he just smirked, "Seriously just go talk to people, but stay close, I mean stay close if you want."

She raised an eyebrow at him, his heart was beating fast, the way she looked, and her electric blue eyes. Connor felt like he was gonna have a stroke.

Or grab her and fuck her right now. One of the two.

He cleared his throat, "drunk people are easy to talk to. They're super extroverted, not scary, and very dumb so it's easy to laugh at them. You'll be fine." He flashed her a wink.

"Right..." she sighed and took a mindless sip of her drink, "oh gross." She winced and looked into the cup.

"You don't like beer?"

"No I usually drink wine, if any alcohol at all."

Connor laughed, "typical for a stuck up classy bitch."

"I'll throw this whole cup of cheap beer at you."

"Do it shortcake, then we'll both be wet." He shot her a wink making her blush as she realized what he was talking about.

"I am not-"

"Hey Connor, Josh needs you. He said it was really important. He's in the front yard." Some guy Connor somewhat recognized came up to him and said. He assumed he was a friend of Josh's.

"Okay?" Connor said and looked at Serena, a protective urge nagging at him, "Serena stay here, I'll be right back."

She nodded and with that Connor pushed through the now even denser crowd towards the door. Once he finally got outside he looked around at the few people littering the lawn for Josh.

But he was no where in sight.

Connor knitted his eyebrows together and finally it clicked.

That guy wanted Serena by herself.

He ran back inside through the people and back to the kitchen where he had left her and told her to stay. But when Connor got there Serena was gone.

After a moment she glanced over her shoulder to see Drake following her with a scary look written across his face. A pain rang through her heart as it beat quickly.

Why was he following her? She quickened her pace, pushing past people to get inside and when she finally did she looked around for a place to escape.

She didn't know where Connor was and didn't know anyone here. She also didn't know the layout of his house so Serena was just hoping she could find an empty room with a lock.

Her chest was rising and falling quickly as her breathing started to become difficult and fast. She felt hot tears threaten to spill while the constricting in her chest worsened. She needed to get away.

Serena's gaze landed on the stairs and quickly made a b-line for them. She stumbled a bit as she hyperventilated and fought back her tears.

The second floor was much quieter and she didn't see anyone from the party up here. She made the choice to go rush down the hallway, stopping in front of the door at the very end.

Her heart still beating in her ears, she opened the door and quickly went inside shutting the it behind her.

Finally she managed to take a labored breath, not even realizing how her hands were shaking violently.

She leaned her back against the door, letting the rush of the cool wood flow into her back. She focused on that feeling and closed her eyes, taking deep breaths until that constricting suffocation of panic drained from her chest.

After what felt like an eternity she opened her eyes and registered the room she was in.

It was bedroom, a king sized bed was in the corner with a black frame. On the opposite wall there was a huge book case that sat against the alabaster gray wall. It looked manly and modern, and a bit messy. With clothes on the floor, hockey skates, and a gym bag.

It was definitely Connor's room.

Intrigue swirled in her head, helping to wash out the anxiety that nearly rendered her to pieces.

Serena walked over to the book shelf, she found it so surprising he even knew how to read let alone have a huge book collection.

As she scanned over the books she saw a bunch of classics in there, along with some others she didn't know, and finally her eyes widened when she saw SKYLYN VOSS there sitting on the shelf.

"No way...." She mumbled. There wasn't just one of her books, he had all of them. Even the little poetry book she had published only 100 copies of a million years ago.

She pulled out of the most worn book from the shelf, it was her book Foxgloves Love. Coincidently it was her favorite book she's written.

Starstruck, she examined the book, looking at the millions of creases in the spin and evidence from many years of use along it's cover and page edges.

She's never looked at one of her books that's not belonged to her before, someone else's copy. It felt...different...seeing it loved by someone other than her in real life. Serena was absolutely fascinated with the new feeling.

She didn't even hear the door unlock.

"I was looking for you everywhere!" Connor asked closing the door behind him.

Serena jumped and looked at him, quickly trying to put his book back on the shelf like a toddler getting caught with something they're not supposed to. Her fast motions caused her to fumble and drop the book on the floor.

"W-what!?" She cleared her throat and blushed a bright red.

"You disappeared! I looked literally everywhere for you I was so-" he stopped himself and glared at her, "you have a hard time listening huh?"

"You're the one that threw an unnecessarily large party knowing I was coming. Now it's my fault I got lost in the crowd?" She scoffed, "whatever, this just confirmed that you're an asshole, which I knew, and that I hate parties and people that attend parties, which I also already knew." Serena crossed her arms and turned away from him.

There was a beat then Connor looked down at the ground and noticed the book, picking it up and looking it over, "have you read this book?" He mumbled.

She looked over her shoulder at Foxgloves Love, her book, there in his hands, "Yeah..."

"Ha, I guess you have some taste shortcake." He joked putting it back in its spot on the shelf next to all her other books.

"It's my favorite, I love all of Skylyn Voss's books."

Serena could only stare at him, she probably looked crazy, but this had never happened to her before.

It never happened to her because she never left her house. Her readers were numbers to her, never faces. Of course she was grateful, but this was so real to her now.

Connor raised an eyebrow at her, "you know her stuff?"

"Uhm...sort of I guess. But her books don't seem like something you'd read." Serena shrugged, trying to ignore how weird this felt.

He rolled his eyes, "well I've read all her books, she's an amazing author. Very mysterious though, virtually nothing about her on the internet. I'm not even sure she's a women but I have a feeling she is. Her writing is stunning, you should read more of her books."

"You really think that..." Serena mumbled before realizing how wistful and crazy she sounded, "I mean, you really think that she's a women? Why's that."

Connor shrugged and sat down on the ground, leaning his back against the bookshelf. He looked up at her and she followed, sitting down next to him.

"I'm not even sure, but I think it's the way she writes. Really strong, descriptive, and ethereal. Women just notice the beautiful vibrant things in the stuff thats overlooked. Voss just captures that effortlessly in her work and it's so impactful." He shook his head, "Anyways I could talk your ear off but I won't."

Serena was staring at him, wide eyed and blushing, even though he was woefully unaware he just told that to Skylyn Voss.

Her heart was beating, not fast but hard, she just couldn't shake the tickling feeling that kissed her heart hearing him, another person, talk about her writing in such a personal way.

"I guess....I guess I'll have to read some more of her work." She whispered, her body leaning into the heat from his.

Connor looked at her too, his eyes sparkling with the interest and adoration he had for these books, her books.

It terrified her, what he would think if he really knew it was her. How the disappointment would completely flood that spark in his eyes now.

But he'd never know.

His eyes flicked from her eyes to her lips, and a smile plastered on his face, "You're almost bearable to be around right now shortcake."

They were gravitating towards each other now, their faces slowly inching closer as if it was universal law for them to do so.

"Maybe hell finally froze over jackass." She was leaning even closer now, about to plant her lips onto his against her better judgment.

But the door swung open, and Drake stood there looking furious, "finally I found you, stupid bitch, you wanna embarrass me In front of my friends? Act like you're not some whore at a party when you're dressed like that?!" He was yelling at Serena until he registered Connor next to her.

Serena jumped and stood up quickly, Connor following, she went to open her mouth to defend herself even though she was scared shitless.

But Connor stepped forward before she could. She glanced at him with a furrowed brow, seeing the murderous glare on his face and clenched knuckles.

He walked up to Drake, and immediately the guys anger unwound into worry.

Without a word, Connor laid a deafening punch right on his face making him lurch to the side and stumble back.

The crack that sounded from the hit made Serena's eyes widen while she flinched.

"Watch your fucking mouth." He rasped out, his voice dark and tense.

Drake mumbled a curse before wobbly standing back up, his nose was bleeding profusely down his mouth, "what the fuck man" he groaned.

"How do you know Serena?" Connor asked.

"What?"

"You fucking heard me."

"Man chill, I just invited her to play beer pong with my friends, I just wanted to hit it! Probably what everyone else here wanted to do to." He was wincing in pain as he pinched the bridge of his nose groaning.

Connor looked like there was fire burning in his eyes. He grabbed a hold of his shirt and slammed him up against the wall, "so you lied to me to get a piece? Who the fuck even are you!"

He tossed him to the side like a rag doll, "get the fuck out of my house." He yelled and Drake stumbled to his feet, sending looks between Connor and Serena before walking out quickly.

Connor finally released his fist and looked at a very stunned Serena, "I can fight my own battles." She sighed narrowing her gaze at him.

"A thank you would also work." Connor rolled his eyes.

Back to their regularly scheduled program.

"Fine Thank you. Are you happy?" She stormed towards the door. "I'm leaving, this sucked and I knew I shouldn't have come."

Connor grabbed her elbow and stopped her, "can you wait a second."

"What so another one of these assholes at this party can harass me? I think I'm good." Serena whipped around and yelled.

"No! No I don't want you to go back down there, I don't want any other guy to lay their eyes on you tonight." He groaned, his eyes dark and possessive as his hand remained tight on her arm. "I really don't feel like punching anyone else's but I will."

Serena panted, her heart hammering in her chest, "then what do you want?"

"You."
