The minute Connor was out of sight the man that sent him away turned to her, and Serena knew as soon as their eyes connected that Josh was not out front.

His gaze was hungry and devious, similar to how Connor look at her sometimes but now it only made her stomach churn.

"Hey there mama."

Mama?

"Sorry but I don't cater to men with mommy issues." She scoffed and went to turn away.

He grabbed her elbow quickly and stopped her, "then what's you name."

"Why would I tell you?" She glared and yanked her arm back, "and don't grab me like I'm your property."

"Fine fine, I'm sorry. My names Drake, I just think you're beautiful." He looked her quickly up and down.

Serena sighed and crossed her arms self consciously over her chest, "My names Serena."

"Beautiful name to go with a beautiful lady. Want to come drink with me and my friends? We are playing beer pong." Drake offered with a sly smile. He wasn't bad looking, dark skin and caramel eyes, his lips were full and went with a nice set of teeth. His hair was curly cut short, but it suited him.

She immediately went to decline his offer but she remembered what Connor said about staying put, and the idea of disobeying his stupid demands enticed her even more.

She flashed a superficial toothy grin, "sure, lead the way."

He smirked back at her and grabbed her cup, he weaved through the dense crowd of people and Serena followed behind him.

She really hated this, the large crowd made her uncomfortable and wound up. A tight feeling binding in her chest that she tried to ignore along with the surge of anxious pains.

She could get through this. She just had to keep telling herself that.

She was led to a folding table that was set up on the pool deck, a slight glow from the sparkling pool and hanging lights casted a cool dim fluorescence across the area.

She looked around and took a deep breath as she was led to the table. There were two girls and two other guys already around the table.

"Hey Drake who's this?" One of the guys said.

"Serena meet Oscar, Sam, Kelly, and Danica." The two blonde women with bright blue eyes narrowed a look at her and smiled probably the fakest smile she'd ever seen.

They looked as if they were sizing her up and the guys looked like they were trying to undress her.

Serena gave them a tiny wave, "Hey.."

"Love your dress." Kelly said with a laugh and Danica nodded in agreement, "where'd you get it?"

"Oh I don't remember-"

"We just finished a game who's got next?" Oscar said cutting her off.

"You wanna team with me?" Drake turned to her and asked.

Kelly gave Drake a sharp look he didn't notice, looking absolutely pissed off at his choice of partner.

"Uhm- " Serena felt the women burning a glare into her, "sure although I should warn you this is my first time playing."

"All good I'll teach you babe." He sent her a wink and Serena nearly threw up her alcohol.

"What a gentleman...." She chuckled uncomfortably and took the ping pong ball he handed her.

Sam and Kelly paired up against her and Drake, standing opposite them of the plastic table. Kelly was glaring daggers at her and Sam juxtaposed her completely with an easy going smile.

Is Drake like her man or something? Why does she seem so hostile towards me, Serena thought.

Drake briefly explained the rules before closing one of his eyes and aiming the ball at their cups, "Serena and I will go first."

He flicked the light ball and landed it in one of their cups with a satisfying splash.

"Beginners luck." Kelly rolled her eyes and Sam sighed chugging the cup.

A quick surge of excitement made her smile before realizing it was now her turn.

Serena took her ball nervously and stood in Drakes spot, mimicking his motions as she aimed.

The tight restraints of her nerves slipping tighter around her throat. She flicked the ball finally under her opponents tense gaze, but unfortunately this wasn't like the books she wrote where the underdog main character was magically good at every new thing they tried.

The ball missed completely and bounced off the table.

Kelly chuckled quickly earning a sharp glance from Serena.

"It's okay, everyone plays better when they're drunk anyways. Cheers." He lifted his cup to her lips and tilted it, her eyes widened and she started to drink against her will as he tilted the cup up fast forcing the liquid down her throat.

It's contents running down her chin slightly until she grabbed the cup from him, "hey-" Serena was about to tell him off when she was cut off.

"Okay our turn!" Kelly said and grabbed her ball, she took no time to prep and effortlessly sunk the ball into one of her cups.

A pleased grin on her face, "I have a feeling I'm going to be very parched this game." She shot Serena a smug look and handed a ball to Sam.

Serena sighed and wiped the beer that spilled on her off with her hand while Sam went and made another shot.

"Dammit, looks like we are both drinking. Here." Drake handed her a cup while he chugged his.

Serena took it and looked inside at the sloshing liquid.

She took a deep breath and went to chug it, tilting it up and gulping it down as fast as she could.

"Good job babe..." Drake said and before she could finish she felt a hand slid up the back of he leg and inch up her dress to her butt.

Her eyes shot open and she instantly jumped away throwing the cup on the ground with half's it's contents, "what the fuck."

"What?" Drake smirked and put his hands up in defense, "can't I have a little fun?"

"W-what?!" Serena was flushed and panting slightly, her heart pounding fast in the worst way possible as anxiety and anger rushed through her.

"No you can't Asshole, I don't even know you! I'm leaving." She turned and stormed away towards the sliding door.

After a moment she glanced over her shoulder to see Drake following her with a scary look written across his face. A pain rang through her heart as it beat quickly.

Why was he following her? She quickened her pace, pushing past people to get inside and when she finally did she looked around for a place to escape.

She didn't know where Connor was and didn't know anyone here. She also didn't know the layout of his house so Serena was just hoping she could find an empty room with a lock.

Her chest was rising and falling quickly as her breathing started to become difficult and fast. She felt hot tears threaten to spill while the constricting in her chest worsened. She needed to get away.

Serena's gaze landed on the stairs and quickly made a b-line for them. She stumbled a bit as she hyperventilated and fought back her tears.

The second floor was much quieter and she didn't see anyone from the party up here. She made the choice to go rush down the hallway, stopping in front of the door at the very end.

Her heart still beating in her ears, she opened the door and quickly went inside shutting the it behind her.

Finally she managed to take a labored breath, not even realizing how her hands were shaking violently.

She leaned her back against the door, letting the rush of the cool wood flow into her back. She focused on that feeling and closed her eyes, taking deep breaths until that constricting suffocation of panic drained from her chest.

After what felt like an eternity she opened her eyes and registered the room she was in.

It was bedroom, a king sized bed was in the corner with a black frame. On the opposite wall there was a huge book case that sat against the alabaster gray wall. It looked manly and modern, and a bit messy. With clothes on the floor, hockey skates, and a gym bag.

It was definitely Connor's room.

Intrigue swirled in her head, helping to wash out the anxiety that nearly rendered her to pieces.

Serena walked over to the book shelf, she found it so surprising he even knew how to read let alone have a huge book collection.

As she scanned over the books she saw a bunch of classics in there, along with some others she didn't know, and finally her eyes widened when she saw SKYLYN VOSS there sitting on the shelf.

"No way...." She mumbled. There wasn't just one of her books, he had all of them. Even the little poetry book she had published only 100 copies of a million years ago.

She pulled out of the most worn book from the shelf, it was her book Foxgloves Love. Coincidently it was her favorite book she's written.

Starstruck, she examined the book, looking at the millions of creases in the spin and evidence from many years of use along it's cover and page edges.

She's never looked at one of her books that's not belonged to her before, someone else's copy. It felt...different...seeing it loved by someone other than her in real life. Serena was absolutely fascinated with the new feeling.

She didn't even hear the door unlock.

"I was looking for you everywhere!" Connor asked closing the door behind him.

Serena jumped and looked at him, quickly trying to put his book back on the shelf like a toddler getting caught with something they're not supposed to. Her fast motions caused her to fumble and drop the book on the floor.

"W-what!?" She cleared her throat and blushed a bright red.

"You disappeared! I looked literally everywhere for you I was so-" he stopped himself and glared at her, "you have a hard time listening huh?"

"You're the one that threw an unnecessarily large party knowing I was coming. Now it's my fault I got lost in the crowd?" She scoffed, "whatever, this just confirmed that you're an asshole, which I knew, and that I hate parties and people that attend parties, which I also already knew." Serena crossed her arms and turned away from him.

There was a beat then Connor looked down at the ground and noticed the book, picking it up and looking it over, "have you read this book?" He mumbled.

She looked over her shoulder at Foxgloves Love, her book, there in his hands, "Yeah..."

"Ha, I guess you have some taste shortcake." He joked putting it back in its spot on the shelf next to all her other books.

"It's my favorite, I love all of Skylyn Voss's books."

Serena could only stare at him, she probably looked crazy, but this had never happened to her before.

It never happened to her because she never left her house. Her readers were numbers to her, never faces. Of course she was grateful, but this was so real to her now.

Connor raised an eyebrow at her, "you know her stuff?"

"Uhm...sort of I guess. But her books don't seem like something you'd read." Serena shrugged, trying to ignore how weird this felt.

He rolled his eyes, "well I've read all her books, she's an amazing author. Very mysterious though, virtually nothing about her on the internet. I'm not even sure she's a women but I have a feeling she is. Her writing is stunning, you should read more of her books."

"You really think that..." Serena mumbled before realizing how wistful and crazy she sounded, "I mean, you really think that she's a women? Why's that."

Connor shrugged and sat down on the ground, leaning his back against the bookshelf. He looked up at her and she followed, sitting down next to him.

"I'm not even sure, but I think it's the way she writes. Really strong, descriptive, and ethereal. Women just notice the beautiful vibrant things in the stuff thats overlooked. Voss just captures that effortlessly in her work and it's so impactful." He shook his head, "Anyways I could talk your ear off but I won't."

Serena was staring at him, wide eyed and blushing, even though he was woefully unaware he just told that to Skylyn Voss.

Her heart was beating, not fast but hard, she just couldn't shake the tickling feeling that kissed her heart hearing him, another person, talk about her writing in such a personal way.

"I guess....I guess I'll have to read some more of her work." She whispered, her body leaning into the heat from his.

Connor looked at her too, his eyes sparkling with the interest and adoration he had for these books, her books.

It terrified her, what he would think if he really knew it was her. How the disappointment would completely flood that spark in his eyes now.

But he'd never know.

His eyes flicked from her eyes to her lips, and a smile plastered on his face, "You're almost bearable to be around right now shortcake."

They were gravitating towards each other now, their faces slowly inching closer as if it was universal law for them to do so.

"Maybe hell finally froze over jackass." She was leaning even closer now, about to plant her lips onto his against her better judgment.

But the door swung open, and Drake stood there looking furious, "finally I found you, stupid bitch, you wanna embarrass me In front of my friends? Act like you're not some whore at a party when you're dressed like that?!" He was yelling at Serena until he registered Connor next to her.

Serena jumped and stood up quickly, Connor following, she went to open her mouth to defend herself even though she was scared shitless.

But Connor stepped forward before she could. She glanced at him with a furrowed brow, seeing the murderous glare on his face and clenched knuckles.

He walked up to Drake, and immediately the guys anger unwound into worry.

Without a word, Connor laid a deafening punch right on his face making him lurch to the side and stumble back.

The crack that sounded from the hit made Serena's eyes widen while she flinched.

"Watch your fucking mouth." He rasped out, his voice dark and tense.

Drake mumbled a curse before wobbly standing back up, his nose was bleeding profusely down his mouth, "what the fuck man" he groaned.

"How do you know Serena?" Connor asked.

"What?"

"You fucking heard me."

"Man chill, I just invited her to play beer pong with my friends, I just wanted to hit it! Probably what everyone else here wanted to do to." He was wincing in pain as he pinched the bridge of his nose groaning.

Connor looked like there was fire burning in his eyes. He grabbed a hold of his shirt and slammed him up against the wall, "so you lied to me to get a piece? Who the fuck even are you!"

He tossed him to the side like a rag doll, "get the fuck out of my house." He yelled and Drake stumbled to his feet, sending looks between Connor and Serena before walking out quickly.

Connor finally released his fist and looked at a very stunned Serena, "I can fight my own battles." She sighed narrowing her gaze at him.

"A thank you would also work." Connor rolled his eyes.

Back to their regularly scheduled program.

"Fine Thank you. Are you happy?" She stormed towards the door. "I'm leaving, this sucked and I knew I shouldn't have come."

Connor grabbed her elbow and stopped her, "can you wait a second."

"What so another one of these assholes at this party can harass me? I think I'm good." Serena whipped around and yelled.

"No! No I don't want you to go back down there, I don't want any other guy to lay their eyes on you tonight." He groaned, his eyes dark and possessive as his hand remained tight on her arm. "I really don't feel like punching anyone else's but I will."

Serena panted, her heart hammering in her chest, "then what do you want?"

"You."
