Shayne

As soon as the bloody package was out of sight and away from Olivia, I made a few calls.

"I'll be there in the next hour, for now I just need you to do that for me. I've already called the others."

"No problem." Sasha paused on the other end of the line. "Is she okay?

"She's a little shaken up, but I think she'll be good. I'll send someone up to watch her while I'm away." Even as I stood out of earshot in the kitchen, I could see Olivia staring blankly out the large paneless window of the living room.

She still looked fuckable as hell.

Her hair was a glorious mess, her lips swollen from the onslaught of my hungry mouth and one of the straps of her little top had fallen down her arm, exposing the delicious swell of her breast.

Jesus Christ! Now isn't the time, Shayne!

But despite her obvious appeal at the moment, her delicious honey skin tone had gone completely white.

I needed to hold her.

As soon as I ended the call, I came up behind her. At first I was unsure of what to do, probably too afraid she'd reject me for some reason. But then she leant back into me.

We simultaneously let out a sigh of contentment before I wrapped my arms around her. She was so cold.

"You okay?" I asked.

"Yeah."

"You sure?"

She abruptly turned in my arms and caused exquisite friction with the movement. Maintaining direct eye contact, she said, "I'm fine, but even if I wasn't, what difference would it make?"

I was ready to sooth the poorly hidden terror in her eyes, when she reached for the back of my neck and pulled me down to her waiting mouth.

Just like that, I forgot everything that had happened in the last few minutes. Desire instantly engulfed me.

I slid my tongue into her mouth and swallowed her moan. Fuck! I'd tasted her not long ago, and I still felt like I had been starved of her taste.

When her fingers slipped through my hair and gave a firm tug, I lost it. With an inhuman growl, I dropped my hands to her full ass and lifted her. She wrapped her legs around my waist while I tried to get us to the sofa.

I threw her onto the plush surface and practically ripped off my tank top, leaving me in a black sports bra—hot molten need almost making me see white.

But then I saw her start to unbutton her jeans, her hungry eyes never leaving my body. I even had the pleasure of seeing the lining of her white lace panties before I reached for her hands and stopped her actions.

I carefully sat beside her laying form and with fierce control summoned from the deepest parts of my humanity, I said, "We can't do this."

You fucking idiot, she's right here, ready for you! I tried to ignore the tormenting voice in my head.

"What are you talking about?" Olivia demanded, immediate rage filling her eyes. Then, so suddenly, the rage turned to palpable humiliation.

I grabbed her before she could bolt off the sofa. "It's not what you're thinking, Olivia. You know I want you. So damn much it hurts."

She refused to make any eye contact. Her cheeks and neck were flaming with deep pink coloring. Great, now I've humiliated her.

"Listen... " I helped her sit up, but she still refused to look me in the eye. Hence, I snapped. "Look at me, goddamit!"

She flinched, but with a generous amount of attitude, gave me the rudest side glance a human being should never have deserved.

I willed myself to check my temper.

She had been terrified, and I'd almost taken advantage of her. On top of that, she mistook my reluctance for rejection. I had to understand.

"You're scared, I get that. But sex won't help any, as much I'd like to have you in every possible way. God knows it took every bit of my being to stop what would have happened." I gripped her chin and made her face me properly. "So I'm gonna ask you again. Are. You. Okay?"

Tears sprang into her eyes so fast, it stunned us both. I saw the panicked look on her face, but there was no way I was going to let her go through this alone. I gripped her chin tighter and placed a firm hold on her shapely waist.

I shook my head as she weakly struggled against my grip. "Ahah... I'm here, right now. Tell me, are you okay?"

For a moment, I thought she wouldn't respond, but then her full lower lip started quivering as she slowly shook her head. "I'm so... so scared."

I placed a light kiss on her mouth, one of comfort and care. "That's totally okay, I promise you. Whatever is going on, we'll figure it out. Together. And I swear, no one's going to hurt you."

"I don't need your protection, Shayne." Even as she tearfully said it, her eyes were filled with such helplessness that my heart squeezed painfully.

"Too bad, I'll give it to you anyway."

"You know, some people take showers so that the people around them don't suffer."

I rolled my eyes at Sasha as she typed away while she lounged on my office couch. "Alright, woman, you've made it abundantly clear that I need to get home. But first I need to know what's going on."

"Shay, we've been at this for the past eight hours. No one can trace back that package to the sender, we can try again tomorrow, when we are all fresh and alive." She amplified her words with a yawn.

I turned to the group of employees I picked off of the technical department. "Anyone else tired?"

They vigorously shook their heads, and with that, I went back to destroying my eyes as I focused on the screen of my desktop, my fingers aching from typing in vain.

Two minutes later, Sasha's words had sunk in and my body's aches and needs agreed with her.

Sasha and the employees were only too pleased to leave on my command.

When I got into the Jeep, Olivia was the first number I dialled. She answered on the third ring.

"Hi," she said breathlessly.

My body tensed. "What's wrong? What's happening?" I was already backing the car out of its spot.

Her beautiful laugh had me pausing. "I don't know about you, but treadmills tend to make me a little breathless. I'm not being chased by evil baby ninjas if that's what you're thinking."

God, I missed her.

"Good, cause evil baby ninjas would suck," I said with a chuckle.

"I don't think I could ever survive them." She was still laughing.

I was glad she hadn't let what had happened affect her for too long. I lived for her smile, and I'd have killed for her laughter. I was so fucking smitten it was embarrassing.

"Not a chance. Is Byron near you?"

Like a sixth sense, I could almost see her beautiful green eyes roll at my words. "Look, just because I let you practically force a strange man onto me for the day doesn't mean I'll let him follow me everywhere."

My temper spiked. "Please tell me you're not alone."

"I'm not alone. They're a bunch of people in the gym with me. I'm pretty sure if someone slits my throat, they wouldn't get very far."

I pulled away the phone from my ear and counted to three, making sure to take big soothing gulps of air. "Don't you think you'd already have bled to death by the time they'd be brought to justice?" I said when I got back to the call.

"I'm messing with you, Shayne. I really would have loved to see your face. I bet the muscle in your jaw clenched the way it does when you're pissed." It actually did.

"That's not funny." I hoped she didn't hear my grin.

"It kinda is. And don't worry, your annoying gigantic friend hasn't left my side for more than a minute, unless it's for something that's for your eyes only."

Her voice had turned extra sultry and I had to grit my teeth so hard I was afraid they'd crush into my jaw.

"Tease me again and I will get there under two minutes, rip off those super tight tights I'm sure you have on right now and spread your delicious thighs wide for my mouth, audience or no audience, fuck it."

The silence on the other end had me grinning even as desire ran hot in my blood. All I could hear was her shallow breathing and the sounds of metal clinking, and several other sounds that indicated a live gym.

"Got nothing to say now? I'm pretty sure you were the chatty one before."

She cleared her throat. "Excuse me, I'd like to get back to my workout now." The line went dead.

I laughed and smiled all the way home.

But my bubbly mood soon disintegrated when I remembered the tons of shit that was hitting me at all corners of my life.

Still, at the moment, Olivia was my first priority, given that she could be in immediate danger. Of course I knew who'd sent the package to her apartment, I just wasn't going to tell her, ever.

If I was going to protect her, that also meant hiding a few things from her.

Speaking of things hidden from her...

I pulled into the driveway of my heavily guarded and isolated fortress. To the public, I lived in the beautiful penthouse of a high priced apartment building, even actually stayed there sometimes. But this was the place I called home, the part of my life not a lot knew about.

I was just about to step out of the Jeep when my phone started ringing. It was Bryon, one of my men I'd appointed to look after Olivia. As far as she knew, I'd simply hired him from some private security company.

The huge man had already called several times in the course of the day to complain about how stubborn the little woman with the pretty eyes was. No doubt that was what the call was going to be about. I answered on the last ring. "Byron, is she still bothering you?"

He was panting. "Shayne, it's pretty bad here—"

Shit. "Is she okay?" I could hear the sound of sirens and people shouting in the background.

I started shaking with fear.

"It's... she's not... someone... explosions." The line was breaking up. "Come fast," was the last I heard before I cut the line and slammed the door closed, shoving the keys back into the ignition and speeding off like my life depended on it.

I reached under my seat and pulled out my heavily encrypted business phone and sent a message to every contact I thought I needed.

My woman is in trouble, track the Jeep.

It only took a couple of minutes before I saw a handful of vehicles trailing behind me. I would have smiled at their loyalty if it wasn't for the pounding of my heart.

The heavens knew I needed that girl way too much. She had to be okay.
