Blood Runs Thicker

Cal was sprawled on her living room couch, bored out of her mind. Honestly, she didn't like the weekends all that much, especially if she didn't make any plans and was stuck at home.

She'd been like this all morning, staring at her phone. She absent-mindedly scrolled through her contacts, stopping on Grace's newly input name. If I texted her she'd probably just ignore me, Cal said with a sigh. But she couldn't help wanting to see her.

Kenzie was hanging out with her new boyfriend this weekend (yep, she finally made a move on that senior, Sean) and she wasn't exactly close enough with Mark to hang out with him alone. Still, she debated texting him anyway since she wanted any excuse to get out of the house.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the front door opening. Great, time to go back up to my room, she thought. But when she peeked over the couch, she didn't see her mother walking through the door.

"Sam?" Cal asked, surprised.

"Cal," the woman replied, equally taken aback. "You're here."

"Of course, I live here," Cal snorted. "Why are you here?"

"I needed to grab some old documents from mom's office for an internship I'm applying for," Samantha replied coolly. "Where is Mom, by the way?"

Cal leaned back on the couch and sighed. "Working until the afternoon."

"Bet you're happy about that."

Cal stiffened. Her sister was well aware of her poor relationship with her mother. In fact, she was basically involved in the bad blood. It was a blessing that Samantha didn't live at home anymore.

Samantha left the room to enter their mother's office. A wave of awkwardness fell upon Cal as she prayed the older woman wouldn't stay long. She doubted she would. It's not like Samantha was particularly fond of Cal either.

After only a few minutes, Samantha exited the office with a handful of paperwork. She paused before leaving, much to Cal's dismay. "You should visit sometimes," she said solemnly.

Cal was actually shocked by that statement. "What? Why? Are you ever even home long enough for me to visit?"

"Even so, a call or something once in a while would be nice," Samantha retorted, her voice growing resentful.

"So now you're going to pretend we have some sort of sisterly bond?" Cal snapped, growing legitimately angry now. "Where were you during all of last year? Where were you when I had to change schools?"

"That was between you and Mom," Samantha argued. "And it's not like you weren't contacting Dad behind our backs either!"

"Well at least he was willing to talk to me!"

There was an air of silence between them for a few seconds as they stared each other down. Then Samantha turned around.

"Don't tell Mom I came over," she ordered, walking out of the house before Cal could reply.

Cal sighed heavily. Apparently this day could get worse.

--

Now in a horrible mood, Cal decided to try to walk off her bad feelings. There was a park situated near her house, and luckily it wasn't as crowded due to the overcast weather. As Cal walked down the sidewalk, she looked up at the sky.

There wasn't a hint of blue peeking through the clouds, and there was a light, chilly breeze. Cal wondered if it would rain – she didn't remember to bring an umbrella.

This sucks.

She definitely hadn't expected to see her sister today.

Cal just wanted to leave the house for good to avoid her mother and sister, but she knew it wasn't possible. She didn't even have a job right now. Maybe she should get one and save up - Cal wasn't confident that she could bear with it until graduation...

Suddenly, Cal felt her pocket vibrate, and she pulled her phone out. Her eyes widened, shocked at the name that came up on the screen. Hurriedly, she swiped to answer the call.

"Hello?" Cal asked, pressing the phone to her ear.

"Uh...hi there. It's Grace."

"Hey...what's up?" Cal tried to shake her nerves and prevent herself from stuttering. This was certainly the last thing she expected to pop up.

"Well..." Grace paused, as if unsure of exactly what to say. "I kind of have a huge favor to ask you."

Cal swallowed, butterflies starting to swarm in her stomach. "Yeah, sure, what do you need?"

"My dad's gone this weekend and...well, I haven't told him about Will yet."

"You haven't?" Cal asked.

"No...I just haven't found the right timing," Grace sighed. "Or maybe I'm just scared. But the point is, I'm going to be alone tonight and I guess I'm just...um..."

"Scared?" Cal asked. She decided not to go into detail about what Grace would be scared of. She did say that Will had a track record of breaking into her house, and Cal's mouth was going dry at the implication.

"Yeah," Grace breathed. "You're the only person I can really talk to about this right now. I'm terrified that if he was stalking me and he happened to...see me home alone, then he'd..."

Grace sounded like she was running out of breath, her voice trembling.

"I'm coming over." Cal said matter-of-factly. "Where do you live?"

"I mean...if you already had plans, then obviously-"

"Trust me, I don't. Especially if you might be in danger."

Grace was quiet for a few seconds.

"I'll send you the address. Come whenever you want."

Maybe this day wouldn't be so boring after all.
