Wife Swap - S01 E12

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 12

I watch every step Fiona takes as my impatience runs up.

"Is Rome alright?" I ask and two pair of eyes fall on me.

"He is, but not your husband." She answers.

Right! I should have asked about Mason first.

"What happened? Where is he?" I try to find my mind racing and my thoughts becoming mixed up.

"His ass was whooped by Rome. He is probably at home with Esme soothing his wounds." She says and my insides twist at the thought.

"How badly was he hurt?" I ask.

"He will need an entire aloe Vera plant." She answers.

I quickly pick my phone and dial Mason's number. It rings and he never answers, I try it a second time, and still no answer. The third time he hangs up on me.

I place my phone on top of the table and now three pairs of years are glaring at me, including Jax. It is like he can pick the tension in my body. Why were they fighting? That is not even a question, probably because of Esme.

Did Rome get tired of my presence or have to hide in his own house and want his wife back? Probably. And maybe Mason refused to let go of her.

It sucks to have your husband and the man that rejected you fight for someone else.

Fiona walks over to me, "Oh honey, you really love to the core don't you?" She places her arm over my shoulder trying to console me and the pain I have felt over the years floods throughout my body threatening to explode. "It will come to pass."

I am surprised that she doesn't say anything sassy. She sincerely seems to relate to my confusing pain of holding onto something that erodes my soul every breathing second yet I foolishly hold on to it. Like someone said, letting go of someone you loved is like two sellotapes that were suddenly being ripped apart and when that happens each sellotape leaves with a part of the other. To be honest I don't which part I am scared to lose his or mine.

I blink back tears, I have cried too much. They say it makes one strong but each time I cry, I become more lenient and accepting of disrespect. Why do we have to hurt to be stronger? Why not be stronger by not hurting anyone?

Jax walks over to me and extends his small arm, on his palm he has a single skittle, "Mama." He says slowly and melts my heart it is a title so powerful I can't help but bend and hug the angelic child, he hates body contact so it is a brief one before he pushes me away.

"See even he knows you will be okay." Fiona smiles at me. "Stop feeling sorry for yourself."

I smile at her. I really had forgotten what it felt to have a life beyond being a housewife. Even with Lia, we meet less since she couldn't stand to be near her ex-husband and his family and I had a lot of chores that kept me busy in the house.

Fiona serves herself a piece of my marble cake. She takes a bite and looks at me. "This is fantastic. You made it?"

I nod and feel awkward with the praise, I don't like how praises make me feel.

"Are you free Friday?" She asks.

I snort nodding since I came here all days are free days. I have nothing to do after dusting the house unnecessarily and it has become monotonous.

"Wonderful. You should give me your number. " She says as she commences to devour the cake.

"By the way, this is Lia. Lia this is Fiona." I introduce the two when I realize we got caught up in my problems and they didn't get acquainted.

"Lia? The one married to the other brother?" Fiona walks over to greet her.

"Was," Lia says.

"At least you got away." She says and an odd expression forms on Lia which is unusual since she jumps at any opportunity she gets to trash-talk Tyler.

Lia checks her phone, "I have to go." She announces. It is impromptu since we were to spend the entire day together.

I don't object to her decision but I will have to ask her later. I open the fridge, I was annoyed because Senna disarranged it and now I cannot access others with ease other things. I place the Tupperwares she brought on the table and remove two more Tupperwares. I do prepare some meals for Lia. She is a working single mother and her working hours barely allow her to prepare a homemade meal.

"I will come over when I can," I assure her. Jax leaves with a long face. I will miss him too.

I remember the photo that was sent to Mason, "Did you take any photos on Sunday?" I enquire.

"No. But Senna did. You need some?" She asks. "I bet a million the photos with you and Rome would piss the hell out of Esme if she ever saw them."

So it is Senna that took the photos and send them. She is a snake just like her friend.

"She already did," I answer.

"How did Mason react?"

"What do you expect?"

"He can dish it but he can't take it? I say power to you. What is good for the goose is good for the gander." She says strongly.

I giggle at her words.

"Make him feel exactly what he did to you. You're very beautiful no man would resist you."

Unfortunately one has, already. I think to myself.

"How?"

"Go out, date show him what he will miss."

"The wife swap was...."

"Screw it." She throws her hands up, stopping me mid-sentence, "You still think you have a marriage to salvage still?"

I don't answer. I am tired of the whole topic.

Silence falls between us and Fiona finishes the remaining cake.

"I was once you." It is a mere whisper, "Even worse, physically abused. Just know I am here for you." She says breaking my walls.

We spend the next hours talking and watching Tv. Time flies by and Fiona leaves in the evening. I learn that she was once married though very young, she is in her early thirties though looks younger. She owns a catering business that offers services for events.

When Rome arrives earlier than usual I am surprised. I had already added several movies on my list that I had estimated would run for an equivalent amount of time he spent to arrive.

I have two types of responses to situations; do nothing or run. However, I decided today I will face Leo and no longer play cat and mouse with him.

As he gets closer I see the bruises that taint his face.

"My God! " I gasp. If he is the one that beat up Mason, I wonder how Mason looks.

He sits down and I get up to find ice. I come back and sit beside him. I take his hand, his knuckles are busted.

I place the ice on top of them. I look up when I feel his gaze on my skull.

"You smell nice." He says.

I swallow hard as my breathing hitches. Those simple words just complicated my thinking.

"Thanks," I say.

I continue to tend to his wounds. He winces when I apply pressure.

"Sorry," I mutter. "Why we're you fighting?" I ask the question that should have been the first one.

"It just happened." He is evasive of the question.

"It is because of her, isn't it?"

I feel his fingers hold my chin, lifting it to meet his eyes. I never notice how grey his eyes are. Naturally, I want to look away but his hold is firm. I lick my lips pulling the bottom one between my teeth. And in a matter of seconds, his lips crash onto mine.
