Charlie

All in all, a pretty depressing day.

I mean, it's bad enough having to run for your life four different times from the same people. It gets old really fast. But on top of all that Pierre decides to finally make his move on Astrid... and that was what really bugged me. Of course, I hadn't exactly been planning to do anything, but it would've been helpful if he hadn't. And seriously, couldn't he have picked a little more convenient time? Like when I was there, so I could do something peacekeeping, like...uh...shoot him?

Seriously.

With all these cheerful thoughts running through my head as we trooped off the train into the semi-crowded terminal, I probably had a pretty dark look on my face. Josh gave me a half-concerned, half-exasperated look but didn't say anything. Pierre, annoyingly enough, was holding Astrid's hand again. She looked pretty tired, but strangely jubilant, along with a sort of wary awareness that lightened her features and made her look even more beautiful. I tried hard not to think about this as she pulled her hand momentarily out of Pierre's, reached into her pocket and pulled out a small case. Then, looking into a shop window, she quickly plucked out the blue contacts, putting them back inside the case and slipping it away again.

"I like your natural color better anyway," Pierre said softly to her, and she smiled at him. I agreed, but his words made me want to hit something, so I looked away, only to see Josh smirking at me.

Despite his humor, I had a feeling that Josh was sharing my morose feeling. Here we were, at a train station in who-knows-where, with only me to guide us to my mom's apartment nearby. It had been at least three years since I'd been to this apartment, and frankly, I didn't want to go back. It didn't hold the best memories for me.

Also, we had just been chased by three men who almost managed to kill us all, not to mention some innocent passengers, and even though we were supposed to be amazing agents, it had taken the help of some British MI6 or SIS agent to wipe out the three men. That said one of two things: a) we were losing our grip, or b) the men had some majorly good skill. I wanted to think the latter... but after the occurrence on the train, I wasn't so sure.

And then there was the whole deal with this random British agent. That brought up several more points: a) what was a British agent doing in France, anyway (then again, what were American agents doing in France?), b) was the MI6 or SIS or whatever he belonged to spying on us for some crazy reason?, c) how the heck did Astrid and him know each other?, and d) what had happened in Australia that had made Astrid come in contact with a British agent?

I looked over at her face as we walked out of the train station into the busy street. Though her face looked satisfied with the world, her eyes looked dark and a little troubled even more so now than with her contact lenses, and she didn't really seem to be concentrating on where she was going, merely letting Pierre lead her.

Australia... I hadn't been there. When did she go there – two years ago? Three? I was pretty sure that Josh and I had been in Malaga, which meant I had been fifteen, which meant that it had to be right before her fourteenth birthday...
