What happened to you?

I opened my heavy eyelids with the heat of a pair of legs intertwined with my own. Slowly taking them away from the redhead next to me, I met Rylan's gaze for a second before she turned back to her phone.

I must admit, though, I had a lovely time yesterday, even though I almost wanted to slap Rylan in the face a few times. When she told me to leave Julie alone, but that was before she warned me about Juile's loss of her mother a month ago.

I talked to Julie for a long time last evening about how I had as well lost my mother. We ended up having a long conversation about the things we miss the most about them.

I miss the way my mother took care of me, that love my father never showed after she had passed, how she would sing with her soft voice for me before I went to sleep or read a fairytale. She was such a beautiful woman inside out, and I don't understand how my father managed to get her. She was too good for him. My aunt believed the same thing, but she has never spoken ill about my dad.

Julie, on the other hand, positively talked about her father. It sounded like they had a nice relationship, and Julie felt like she had a normal childhood. It hurt how much I envy her for that. If only I could speak well of my father.

She introduced her father to me, and we, of course, ended up talking about my father's business how he had heard so many good things about it. I gave him my dad's number if he was interested in coming in contact with him. I did what my father asked, even though I hated every second of it. I never do what he tells me, but sometimes I have to.

Rylan seemed pleased with that, which made my anger rise. So instead of calling the night, I found myself, someone, I could have fun with—a red-haired with a name that I forgot. I'm not good with names, and I honestly don't give a damn since she will be gone anyway.

"You are unusually quiet this morning," The blond-haired said and took a sip of her coffee.

"Why do you care?" I almost spat with the reminder of how badly she treated me yesterday. Cornered me into a wall and talked to me rudely, making me feel so small. I can't stand her most of the time.

"I don't; I just pointed it out," She replied, and I let out a breath. She is back into her regular clothes, but today she is wearing dark green cargo pants, a thin black shirt, and the letter jacket above. She has such a typical military-style, and yet she looks incredible in it. With those blue eyes and blond hair, she can pull anything off.

Yet yesterday evening, that pain she had written across her entire face is one of the worst things I have ever seen. She lost someone; I don't know who, but I could easily tell. But it was the fury that frightened me the most. When I think about my mother, I become sad, not angry. I don't understand why she would have that kind of reaction.

"Do you ever sleep, soldier?" I asked out of the blue since she spends so much of her time babysitting me.

"Yes," She answered, not looking at me; the word felt so forced, though.

"What happened to you?" I wondered, and she placed her phone on her lap in frustration as she gazed at me.

"Nothing happened to me, Hadley," She said firmly.

"Then why do you have so many small spots of scars on one side of your face and neck?" I asked, taking her off guard with my question. She immediately hid her hand in her pocket, which turned into a fist as she stared at the floor, lost in her thoughts.

"I'm going to get myself another coffee," She said, taking the cup with her and left the bedroom quietly. I sighed in defeat, I know I shouldn't push, but my curiosity is getting the better of me. Rylan is so intriguing yet manages to fire up every nerve in my body.

The red-haired next to me turned, and a hand was placed onto my naked thigh. She is still asleep, though. I moved away from her touch and found my way to the bathroom to wash away last night's troubles.
