Lara swaggered into Macaulay’s office , with her skimpy clothes, which was revealing almost everything that should be hidden. Barrister Babalola SAN had spoken to her on various occasions .

“Lara your gown is too short , or your gown is exposing your cleavage .”

He was shocked that well dressed Lora would visit her husband in tbe office , she wouldn’t find anything wrong with her sister’s clothes , they would spend hours chitchatting before she leaves .

“Lara what is it ? I didn’t ask for you?”

Mac had gotten to know that he could only keep Lara away if he was harsh at her .

“I have a preposition to make to you Macaulay, there’s a new place in town, I heard they have good food and wine let’s try that out .”

Macaulay was confused as to what Lara’s mission was .

“Lara I’m not playing your games, I’m your fiancees best friend and your sister’s husband, I can’t have this relationship with you, I can’t hurt the people I love the most in my life , because of you .”

She got up from the table where she had leaned seductively to expose her cleavages, and sauntered out of the office ,making sure that Macaulay saw how her hips danced in every direction .

That evening when Macaulay got home he brought up Lara’s issue up .

“Baby I don’t understand why you would go and bring a snake from the bush to stay under your roof. I’m not comfortable with your sister in my office .”

Lora didn’t understand what the fuss was about.

“Is she making a move on you Baby ? ”

Macaulay couldn’t say she was , because she had not said the word but her body language was shouting it .

“She even asked that we go out for lunch and I turned her down .”

Lora laughed .

“Honey I go for lunch break with my colleagues in the hospital. This is modern times , you’re being too uptight, please you can go eat lunch together, it doesn’t mean you’re cheating, or are you going to cheat on me with my sister?”

Macaulay shook his head .

“I can’t cheat on you with your sister…”

The next day at work Lara catwalked into Macaulay’s office.

She smiled seductively.

“My offer is open , can we go to Grandma’s kitchen for lunch , I heard they have delicious fried rice and chicken .”

Macaulay thought about this and went with her .

“What are your plans for Micheal?”

Macaulay asked over meal .

“I don’t know what I feel for him, sometimes I can’t live without him ,other time I hate his sight .”

Macaulay was truly confused .

“Lara you’re a confused person , let me tell you, you can’t ever pull me to bed , I’ve given my heart to Lora, only death can break my vow.”

Lara laughed .

“Maybe you want her dead?”

She joked, but Macaulay didn’t find this funny.

“I hope you’re kidding?”

He said with a frown on his brows .

“Calm down you are too uptight, I was kidding , I can’t hurt a hair on my sister’s head .”

Macaulay relaxed .

“But don’t be too sure I can’t get in bed , I regret not being this bad back then, I would have wrapped you around my fingers .”

Macaulay was disgusted by Lara.

“You see I am not getting into bed with you now or ever .”

Lara laughed .

“Lora you’re standing up for , would you still stand by her if you know half of the things she’s done ?”

Macaulay was curious.

“What do you mean ? What did she do ? What secret did she keep from me ?”

Lara giggled and got up and went to the bathroom. When she returned she picked her car key.

“I’ve transferred their money, I’m going off to see a client .”

Lara said as she left Macaulay lost in his thoughts . It became a routine they would both drive up to the Grandma’s for lunch , It was serene and quiet.

Macaulay thought about what Lara could have done in the past , that may be responsible for their childlessness, he begged Lara to tell him, but she wouldn’t.

Bidemi and her Husband Dotun had gone to Grandma’s kitchen for lunch it was Dotun who saw Lara and Macaulay.

“Hey baby see your friend sitting over there with her husband.”

Bidemi turned and saw it was Lara and Macaulay, she was wondering what they were doing there .

“Let me go and say hi to my friend and her husband”

She knew if she had told him, it was Lora’s twin and not Lara, he wouldn’t have allowed her go there ,to avoid a scene .

“Tolotolo is this why you refused to get married ? To be chasing after your sisters husband?”

Bidemi said to Lara .

“What’s this Bidemi?”

Macaulay said .

“Please sit quietly Macaulay I’m massively disappointed in you, how could you come out to take lunch with this snake? If Lora is blind can’t you see that this lady wants to destroy your marriage?”

Lara hissed and tried to get up from the chair and Bidemi pushed her back on her sit .

“You leach where are you running to ? Don’t you have something to say ? Are you running away ?”

By this time Dotun had rushed to calm Bidemi . The security men rushed down to prevent the situation from escalation . Bidemi asked Dotun to drop her off at the teaching hospital.

“I want to pick something from the office , I’ll be home in an hour , don’t worry about me I’ll book an Uber.”

Dotun drove away in their Toyota Camry 2020 version . She went to trauma surgery department ,and asked to see Lora, who had just returned from surgery room .

“Bidemi what are you doing here , I thought your duty won’t start till about six PM ?”

Bidemi was supposed to be on night duty .

“Lora we need somewhere private to talk .”

Bidemi dragged her along .

“Be careful, do you want to pull off my arms ?”

Lora screamed as Bidemi dragged her along .

“Are you aware your husband goes to lunch with your sister ?”

Lora nodded her head

“Oh my God Lora! Are you mad ? How could you let such thing happen knowing their history ?”

Lora couldn’t understand Bidemi’s fuss.

“Really Macaulay told me about that , I didn’t see anything wrong , I think we’re in the twenty first century, we shouldn’t be enslaved. Macaulay isn’t a man that can cheat , he’s a devoted husband and friend .”

Bidemi tried to convince her that , Lara should be fired from her position, but Lora couldn’t see any need .

“Will at least follow me to see a pastor at Surulere, she’s been of help to women .”

Lora thought about the idea .

” Like the last one that said my mum was responsible for my inability to get pregnant? My mum isn’t into juju , she barely believes in the existence of God.”

Bidemi and Lora laughed about that episode.

” That man was so fake , he was saying your mum, I feel it’s that wicked witch of a twin sister, and you refused to me what she said at the reception.”

Lora thought about it .

“Lora I saw her robbed a handkerchief on your stomach after that evil embrace, she robbed a red piece of clothes on your stomach .”

Lora didn’t believe in superstition.

” She said I would never be happy in My marriage to Macaulay, knowing that she had feelings for him makes me feel it was anger speaking not her.”

Bidemi kooked at Lora in disbelief.

” You still think it’s okay for your twin sister to tell you such nonsense on your wedding day, at your reception?”

Lora didn’t see a big deal , knowing that Lara had always been envious of her.

On the Friday of that week Bidemi took Lora to the pastor at Surulere , she counselled Lora and prayed for her.

“My sister there’s nothing God cannot do . I was childless for six years after my marriage, I tried in so many places, I couldn’t find help , I found God and he opened my womb and put a baby , my Aunt had to die for me to conceive, she had tied my womb with a copper wire , I will pray for you , even if your childlessness is natural or done by somebody, God will open your womb.”

She prayed for her and they drove back to the island .

” Bidemi do you actually believe God can do what people say he does ?”

Bidemi nodded.

” Then why did he allow me suffer from childhood and now I adulthood?”

Bidemi didn’t have an answer.

” Lora all I can say is God is God, he makes everything right in his time.”

They dressed all the way in silence, Lora was playing Ekweme by Osinachi , she dropped Lora off at her gate and drove off to her four bedroom detached duplex. She drove in , the light in the studies was on . It meant Macaulay was back. She sat back in the Range Rover SUV and cried her eyes out . When she was done she went upstairs.

Macaulay was reading a case file when she got to his studies .

“Hey baby how are you doing?”

Lora embraced Macaulay from behind , as he was focus on his laptop .

“Fine” Macaulay mumbled, Lora was shocked at his response, he was cold and withdrawn .

” Baby what’s wrong, you’re sounding so distant why are you being so could?”

Macaulay raised his head from the computer.

” Is there anything about your past you’re hiding from me?”

Macaulay asked , Lora was astounded and taken aback , by the question, it was like a bull ram into her stomach.

“Macaulay why that question?”

Lora was shocked .

“Don’t hide behind the question , I’m the lawyer here, don’t try to be smart with me !”

Lora didn’t know what to say.

” I don’t know what is getting you so worked up , but I don’t have an answer to your question.”

Macaulay was mad at Lora for the first time in their five years marriage.

“You’re walking away ? I’m going to dig to the root, I’m going to find what it is you did in th past ! The ears had voices.”

He screamed at Lora was going to the room , she cried bitterly that night she had never felt that bad in a long time.
