“Hello Macaulay are you in Ibadan right now .”

Bidemi had woken Macaulay from sleep with her incessant calls , twelve missed calls in five minutes.

“Bidemi what’s it ? this one you’re baptizing me with calls like raindrops .”

he had returned from a court case in Abuja that evening, he flew on Arik air plane from the Nnamdi Azikiwe airport Abuja to lbadan . He slept on the couch and dozed off for about an hour . he thought he was dreaming while the call was coming in .

“yeah I’m in Ibadan , why the urgency in your voice ?”

Bidemi was panting and crying on the phone .

“please I beg you in the name of God! please rush to Lora’s place ! I think she’s done something stupid…”

Macaulay jumped up from the couch , adrenaline surged up his veins .

“Lora ? what’s wrong with her ?”

he felt his heart basking like an earthquake.

“Lora broke up with Maxwell Okechukwu this evening, I think she made an attempt on her life .”

Macaulay dashed to the drawer where his car keys were , he grabbed the nearest key that was a key to a Toyota Tundra his dad had handed down to him .

“Musa!!! open the gate ! ”

Macaulay turned on the ignition, the truck roared to life .

“Musa! be fast open the gate!”

he was impatient, immediately the gate man open the gate , Macaulay stepped on the throttle , as the car moaned like a wild beast , he beat every traffic light , he headed toward Lora’s house at the university community. he jumped off the car and began to knock at Lora’s door .

“Lora! Lora! please come and open the door !”

Lora was not responding, Macaulay began to kick at the door over and over . The noise brought Lora’s neighbors out they gathered and asked Macaulay what he was doing,he explained to them what messagehe had gotten from Lora’s roommate , they joined him , trying to break the door , they knocked the hinges on the door out , and rushed into the bedroom , there Lora was lying beautifully , with a single line of tears running down her eyes .

“Lora why ! Lora why !”

Macaulay screamed .

he carried her on his arms and rushed her into the truck , some neighbors joined the vehicle, and they drove to the university teaching hospital.

“please emergency here ! ”

the attendants rushed with a trolley and rolled Lora to the ICU . Macaulay was prancing and pacing .

“are you a family member ?”

the emergency doctor asked Macaulay.

“no.. no .. I’m just her friend .”

Macaulay said to the doctor .

“what happened to the patient ?”

Macaulay had come along with the sachet of the drug Lora took .

“I think she ingested a whole pack of this drug .”

the doctor rushed back to the ICU, Lora was given drips and the doctors struggled to get her heart beat , after a long while that seem endless , they resuscitated her , and placed her on a life support machine .

” Mr Macaulay, I thank God you brought the patient in when you did , she would have died in the next thirty minutes without medical attention, right now she’s still in coma but I think she will make full recovery.

Macaulay had rushed to the hospital in his boxers , he had to sleep in the hospital emergency waiting area till morning, he was allowed to see Lora, so many tubes coming out from her nose and mouth , the oxygen mask covered her face .

Mrs Susan arrived at the hospital on the first Air Peace flight that departed for Ibadan that day , she had been awake all night , talking to Macaulay on the phone, she couldn’t close her eyes to sleep .

” How is she doing? had she woken up ?”

Mrs Susan asked Macaulay who came to pick her at the entrance to the emergency ward and took her to Lora’s ward room .

she broke into tears when she saw her daughter battling for life, she had not seen Lora for two years, to see her in such helpless state .

“Macaulay thank you for being here for my daughter, I’ll be with her .”

Mrs Susan said .

“Mrs Susan I will always come in for your daughters, I pray Lora makes it out , without any damage.”

Mrs Susan sighed .

“Don’t worry ma’am Lora will be fine , I am travelling to Lagos, to work my father’s chamber there , I’ll be in touch . ”

Macaulay traveled to Lagos the next day day . Bidemi had returned to Ibadan to be with Lora, it was three days before Lora opened her eyes .

Okechukwu got to know about Lora’s health after he kept calling her number for three days without a response ,so he had called Bidemi , who broke the news to him , he drove to the hospital to see her .

Mrs Susan saw Okechukwu strolling Into Lora’s room.

“young man where are you going?”

Okechukwu was looking crestfallen, and beat down . he raised his guilty face to look at Mrs Susan.

“Good afternoon ma, I’m here to see Lora, I had about the sad event, I want to tell you how much I’m…”

Mrs Susan wouldn’t let him complete his sentence.

“Mr Maxwell go back the way you came take your car and leave this premises, I don’t want to see you ten feet near my daughter , or else I’ll show you I’m a Warri woman, I don’t want to hear anything from you , just get out. You left my mother in a Limbo”

Mrs Susan screamed.

eyes turned to them , Okechukwu cowed out of the reception hall.

Mrs Susan returned to the room where Lora was kept . she and Bidemi sat together watching after Lora for two months , while she was still in coma.

” tell me more about Lora”

Mrs Susan Bidemi.

” you’re her mother , how can I tell you more about her ? ”

she managed to smile.

” stop pretending Bidemi , I know you and Lora despised me, I’m not the best of mothers, I just wish I could have time to mend our bad relationship.”

Mrs Susan said . Bidemi saw how Mrs Susan lost beauty and freshness, but being in the hospital, cleaning Lora when she defecated on herself or peed .

” Lora has lived a very sad life ma’am , I hated you for choosing Lara over Lora, she just wanted somebody to love her , Lora would spend her free times reading and studying to get good grades , just to appease you , and make you love her too, but at some point she realized that whatever she does , she would never get your approval , she gave up .”

Mrs Susan was weeping as Bidemi spoke . Bidemi’s phone rang, she peered at the screen , it was Macaulay calling to check on Lora again .

“hello Mac! how far how are you doing? ”

Macaulay was sounding distanced and worn out .

“I’m just managing the Lagos traffic is roasting me up , I wish my dad would move me back to the Ibadan chamber , I hate the hustle and bustle of Lagos .”

Lora managed a chuckle.

“well you can always move back to Abuja Mr lawyer .”

Macaulay hated when Bidemi called him that.

“how is your internship going? how do you cope with work and taking care of Lora ?”

he asked .

“well I do what I can when it’s time for me to resume for work , I just wear my coat, and join other intern’s”

Macaulay had called everyday while Lora was on admission to check on her .

” So how’s my crush today? I hope she’s getting better?”

Macaulay asked .

“Macaulay I can’t really saying , she’s still plugged in to the oxygen machine . ”

she looked at Lora’s mum and on Lora’s vital signs machine.

” Bidemi I have to go now , my attention is needed somewhere else. I just transferred five hundred thousand naira into your account, I hope that would help with your expenses and bills . ”

he hung up the call.

” seems this Macaulay guy is a keeper ? ”

Mrs Susan asked .

” well he’s loved your daughter Lora since three hundred level, but Lora couldn’t be with him because of his friendship with Lara. ”

Mrs Susan watched in silence.

” ma’am Lora, never planned to go into prostitution. she just wanted to be loved and cared for neither you or her dad could, she fought so hard to get her dad acknowledge her , but he kept turning her down, Lora has been a very sad girl . you people pushed her into this . ”

Lora watched as tears ran like a flood down Mrs Susan’s face .

” Bide.. Bidem… ”

Bidemi turned to see Lora had woken up from her coma, she screamed , Mrs Susan who went to buy food , rushed in fearing that Lora had died .

” she’s woken up ! she’s woken up ! thank you Jesus . ”

Mrs Susan knelt down before Lora’s bed , took her hands in hers and began to cry .

” Baby I’m sorry forgive me, even though I don’t deserve it , please Lora don’t leave me you’re all I have. ”

she held Lora and cried , the doctors rushed in, they were so happy for see that Lora made it back from the land of the dead.

They removed the feeding tubes that we’re connected through Lora’s nose down to her stomach and the oxygen mask on her face .
