The Desmond’s were driving on the mainland bridge to attend a wedding reception at Banana island , Tiniola was seated next to her husband , as he drove Toyota land cruiser SUV 2020 model , Tobi his twenty four year son was sleeping at the back seat , while his twin sister Yemi was busy chatting and smiling on her phone, Tobi and Yemi were light skinned, with coily hair, they were what Nigerians call half cast , their mother was almost white , grandma Lucy was a white woman from England, Mr Bankole had met and married her in London, when he resided there , the Bankole’s had only two children, Tiniola and Adeshina , Mrs Lucy moved back to London when Mr Bankole had died in 2005 from cancer . There was a call on Mr Desmond’s Phone he ignored it and continued driving .

The caller kept calling, Mr Desmond ignored the call .

“Desmond are you going to pick that call ?”

Mr Desmond looked at his phone and ignored it .

“I said pick up that call Desmond!”

He ignored her and continued driving.

“Is it that you’re deaf or having a problem in your brain? That you’re completely ignoring me ?”

He looked at his wife sternly.

“Tiniola you can see that I’m on the steering wheel ? I don’t want another fight with you right now in front of our children. We’re going for a wedding please can you not ruin the day ?”

Mrs Tiniola hissed .

“You’re trying to cover up the topic ? What kids ? Which of them doesn’t know that you’re a flirtatious man ? That you’re an irresponsible serial cheat”

Mr Desmond was pissed at her accusation.

“You keep calling me cheat! Tell me one day in our twenty six years of marriage that you’ve ever caught me cheating?”

He asked shouting at the top of his voice .

“Must you be caught to be a cheat ? What about the calls you lock yourself up in your room or the bathroom to make ? What about when I caught you staring at the housemaid lustfully, you were almost eating them up with your eyes.”

Mr Desmond was tired of hearing her make such unfounded allegations

“Tini! I’ve never cheated on you, in the past twenty three years of our marriage! yes for a minute I may I was lost staring at her water-melons and hips it was massive! Which man doesn’t do that!?”

He screamed at the top of his voice .

“Responsible men don’t do that! Responsible men don’t! Desmond you have to take up that call!”

He ignored her and continued driving .

“Desmond she’s calling again who is Cynthia! You have to pick that call in front of your family! Pick it up and let your children see the kind of man you are!”

She snatched his phone and picked the call . A female voice was heard speaking

“Hello Dex I’m waiting at the reception of Paradise hotel , please do drop by when you are back from the wedding reception, you talked about, I’m here with the blueprint for you to cross check, before I take it to the auditors, I will be going to….”

Mr Desmond snatched the phone from his wife.

Mr Desmond had it to his neck and exploded.

“For twenty four years now I’ve been your lap dog ! I do whatever you want ! I abandoned my friends , I abandoned my family ,I abandoned a woman I loved! For what? To be demeaned and humiliated by you in front of our children! My life has been a mess and a crisis with you! I don’t blame anyone ! I blame my stupidity ! I blame my greed ,I had everything I wanted in two beautiful babies …”

Tiniola cut him off .

“You mean you have children out there out of wedlock? Oh my good Lord! Desmond you’ll not die a good death ! Turn this car amd take me back home!?”

She asked Shouting the roofs off , becoming hysterically, she removed her gele from her head and hit Desmond who was driving, he ignored her and continued driving .

“Yes! I’ve two daughters ! I abandoned them for more than twenty years now! just to be with you all I have gotten in return is your constant nagging and tribulation! I’m tired of your suspicion! I’m tired of your nagging! I’m getting a divorce!”

Mr Desmond screamed .

“You cannot get divorced from me! You cannot use me and dump me!”

She screamed at the top of her voice , spittle plastered his face .

“Guys can you stop this! You’re freaking me out! We’re on the highway!”

Yemi voiced her concern .

“Shut up! Yemi! When your elders are talking”

The both parents shut their daughter up in unison

“Mum you guys ain’t talking you’re fighting again on the highway! I don’t wanna die! Dad you are driving like a maniac! You can park your vehicle and have a good fight! Don’t risk our life and those of other road users please…”

Yemi went on venting .

“Yemi I asked you to be quiet stop talking!

Tobi was busy sleeping, with an afrobeat song by Wizkid blasting on his headphone.

“I am going to take everything from you! You’re not going with a pin from me ! I made you who you are today, I’m taking the lands , the companies , I’m taking everything from you! Oh my God I’ve been living with a beast for twenty five years! I’m done for !!”

Mrs Tiniola threatened , they had this conversation, back and forth , but they couldn’t actually breakup.

“You can take whatever you want! You think I don’t have my own life ? I’m not your puppet not anymore, I’ll make use of what’s left of my life , my daughters…! I will leave Nigeria for you!”

They both continued arguing and couldn’t see a trailer that was coming at top speed, carrying Bags of cement, it was running so fast and Mr Desmond was driving slowly, Yemilade saw the truck before it reached the SUV, she called to her father’s attention, It was already late , the truck knocked the SUV from behind, the car jumped to the right and hit a pavement, crossed to the other side of the road, knocking a car that was on top speed , then ran back to the right pavement and leapt over the steel barricade and plunged into the shallow canal water , the car wee turned up side down, with the stomach and tyres facing the bridge , and the car taking in water, that choked the occupants of the SUV. the traffic gridlock was shut tight .

The roadsafety and fire service were invited , they had to cut open the door of the vehicle, to get to the people in the car, the sheets of the vehicle was mangled together,the car was battered from impacts. , Mrs Tiniola had died on the spot , She wasn’t using her sit belt, she had removed it while she was struggling to get hold of her husband’s phone, Tobi and Yemi were unconscious, Mr Desmond was alive barely breathing, the ambulance rushed them to a nearby general hospital, the twins were in Coma at the ICU for two weeks before they gave up one day apart from each other . Mr Desmond was left empty . The Bankole’s had taken everything from him, Adeshina had accused him of causing the death of his sister and her children , all the cars and houses were seized from him . He was left with only five hundred million naira on his offshore account,and a mansion he had secretly acquired in Lekki, his Nigerian accounts were frozen, The Bankole’s had connections to government and power.

At the NYSC camp in Mangu road Plateau state, Macaulay was going to the cafeteria with his best friend Micheal, when he met Lara resuming to camp.

“Hey late bed you got posted here ? We just keep running into one another !”

Macaulay said as he ran to give Lara an embrace.

“You stopped calling me Macaulay! Such a bad friend.”

Lara said after the embrace.

“Guys! Am I invincible? Please acknowledge me ! ”

Micheal yelled . Lara turned to the charming young man who was with Macaulay.

“Oh forgive my bad manner! Lara please meet my friend! He’s actually my best friend in the world, he’d gone to England for university, he’s also a lawyer , we went to the Kano law school together.”

Micheal gave Lara his hands and held it for rather too long .

“My name is Michael Obalande , your beauty is so enchanting, alluring and captivating, please may I help you with your luggages?”

Lara smiled in a way Macaulay had never seen , he saw the spark burning between them , they helped Lara with her luggage to the female hostels.

“Lara tell me everything about you! I want to know you!”

Micheal said , Lara and Michael discussed so much . After two weeks in camp , Michael had something to say to Lara. The sun was burning bright, it was during the afternoon recess.

“Lara I’ve been around the world, I’ve had many adventures, I’ve had many girlfriends, white black, Hispanic, Caucasians , but I’ve never felt the way I feel with you, I panick whenever I see you, my heart trembles when I want to speak to you, there’s trepidation over me, whenever I see you, please can you be my girlfriend? I promise to treat you like a queen, and give you all my attention.”

Lara was speechless, this was the first time, a guy had broken down the barricade she cocooned herself with, to avoid men , she didn’t want to be like her mother, changing from one man to another, she had loved Macaulay from the first day she saw him at the UI law department, but it seemed her love was not reciprocated.

“Let me speak with Macaulay first .

Micheal was confused as to why Lara had to seek permission from Macaulay to date him, because he had never mentioned having a relationship with her to him

“Okay just to that please I’m restlessly waiting for you .”

She smiled and went away . She dialled Macaulay’s phone number , he picked on the second ring .

“Hello Mac can we see? ”

Lara asked with her heart beating like a thunderbolt .

“Is there any issue Lara ? I’m kinda busy at the moment.”

Lara spoke urgency , she wanted to see him immediately.

“Okay! Okay! Lara I’m on my way , wait for me at the cafeteria .”

A few minutes later Macaulay emerged from whatever rat hole he was hiding.

“Why are you looking so tensed up Lara ? Is there anything wrong ?”

Lara took a sip from her glass of Chivita Orange juice . She passed a cup to Macaulay

“My God! Lara you can give a man heart attack! Why were you sounding as if the camp was under bandit attack ?”

Lara smiled.

“Well I needed to see you urgently, you know I’ve loved you from the first day I saw you, but for you not so much love is reciprocated towards me…”

Macaulay cut in .

“Hmmm Lara you have been my bestie on campus, I care for you, I could walk on fire for you , but there’s a romantic flame that should flare up in friendship to get to marriage or relationship that I’ve not felt in us , you’re a great lady , though you have this tough melancholic outlook , but it one gets to know you , they’d agree that you’re an angel .”

Lara looked at him morosely

“I just want to inform you , that Micheal had asked me to be his girlfriend and I’m giving it a thought, I just wanted to know you that you really don’t want me , since Lora your crush ” she made a mocking sign with her hand .

“Has gotten herself a boyfriend.”

At the mention of that Macaulay frowned .

“Well Lara Micheal never told me about his intentions towards you , but I can vouch for him, that Micheal is a lovable person, he’s kind and loyal , very generous, you can see he’s been paying for our bills since we got to camp, that’s natural Micheal .”

Macaulay hated talking about his crush on Lora, she had shattered his heart when she finally told him, that she was seeing another man .

“Hey babes why did you have to leave me all by myself? ”

A slim and beautiful girl kissed Macaulay on his cheek .

“Sorry babe , I had to talk over some important issues here with my friend Lara. Please Lara meet Glad she’s my new girlfriend.”

.he smiled and winked at Lara, who frowned not finding that funny .

“Please Lara give it a yes ! Please don’t break my man’s ribs , like mine was broken .”

He teased her , before going away with Glad.

“Hey babes who is she to you ?”

Glad asked Macaulay.

“Well she’s my bestie from year one at the university, we have been best of friends together.”

Glad mood changed like a sunny day gathering clouds .

“Babes that girl loves you, men look at the way she was eying me , I felt like the ground should open up and swallow me up.”

Macaulay laughed to a cracking point .

“Baby stop imagining things up, we’re just friends , yeah sometimes she might be jealous when a girl comes around , but we understand our relationship.”

Glad gave up , she and Macaulay returned back to their platoon , after the instructors blowed the beagle . They were over two thousand Corp members in the camp , on their white on white shirts and shorts , with white sneakers .

Lara and Micheal started a firing relationship on the third week of camp , Macaulay was happy for her , because he could see the flames of love burning in her eyes for Micheal.

Lora and Okechukwu had just returned from a trip to Dubai and Paris , Lora kept pinching herself to be sure she wasn’t dreaming, they made love on the cosiest beds suites in Dubai , for the first time she made love , and felt loved , she woke up to breakfast in bed and do at the fanciest restaurants in Dubai and Paris. She was surprised on sunny morning in Paris, when Okechukwu knelt down before him , her heart was racing like a dog chasing a prey .

“What …? What…? What are you doing O.K? _

She asked perplexed, the whole attention of the people in the restaurant turned to her . Okechukwu brought a small box holding a diamond ring and held her hand .

“Lora twenty nine years, I’ve roamed this earth , searching for a vision , for a goal, searching for a piece of my life that eluded me , when I saw you the first time, you completed the puzzle , from that day I couldn’t think of anything else, other than to make you my wife . Please Lora will you marry me ? ” Okechukwu asked .

“Say yes say yes say yes!” Other people in the restaurant sang.

“How can I not say yes to you Ok? You saw me in the gutters , I felt less of a woman , you loved me , you’ve changed so much in me , so O.k I say yes I love you baby, I will be your wife .

He wore her the ring they kissed each other , and Okechukwu lifted her up her fit and spinned her roundabout and kissed her lips, tears drops trailed down his brown skin .
