’what!, I can’t believe this’’ I shouted,

‘’you have to calm down sir, you are in a hospital’’ the doctor begged.

‘’ the poor boy is just the end result of your mistakes with my cousin’’ he added,

‘’but why didn’t you tell me all along?, why keep such thing away from me?’’ I asked angrily, but my question kind of made the doctor angry.

‘’listen mister, you have no moral justification to be disturbing my peace this morning. You never showed any atom of care or love to the boy. You virtually left him all alone with his mother, so why the sudden interest?. If you have any questions, you should direct it to comfort and not me. She was very much informed and aware of the child’s condition. Please you should leave my office now’’ he said seriously, leaving me short of words.

‘’damn you Comfort’’ I hissed, ran out of the doctor’s office and headed back to comfort’s house. I really wasn’t thinking straight. I just wasn’t myself. My mind was full of anger and hate. I couldn’t believe Comfort could keep such horrible information from me.

‘’damn’’ I breathed as I drove furiously.

On getting to comfort’s apartment, I met only her mother who was extremely relieved to see me.

‘’where is my daughter?’’ she asked, leaving me with great surprise.

‘’what ?, I don’t understand?’’ I stammered.

‘’I have been here for more than thirty minutes. The apartment was open with no one inside. My daughter’s phone is equally switched off. I thought she was with you because she told me last night that she was spending the night with you’’ the old woman queried suspiciously. I drew back and studied her nervously.

‘’I left her this morning. It hasn’t been up to an hour I left her alone’’ I answered, fetched my phone and dialed comfort’s phone number, but just like the old woman said, the phone was switched off.

‘’I guess she went across the street to fetch something, I believe she will be back soon’’ I stammered .

‘’I hope so’’ comfort’s mother replied with a suspicious look.

We waited for an hour but Comfort never returned, I left for my house in order to see my wife who I knew was totally worried about me. When i got home, I wasted no time in telling Jessica the latest happenings. She couldn’t believe her ears.

‘’well I’m glad you finally found the truth concerning little Caleb, Comfort never bargained that the boy would end up with sickle cell. I bet she was devastated when she learn t of her son’s genotype. I guess it’s one less problem to worry about now, but I hope the silly girl hasn’t gone away to take her life’’ she muttered with great concern. I shrugged and swallowed hard.

‘’I’m so scared my love. I pray she returns. You could have seen the manner her mother kept looking at me suspiciously’’ I confessed. Jessica held my hands and smiled.

‘’it will be well my dear. Have no fear’’ she assured me.

I headed to work soon after, returning to Comfort’s apartment at the end of the day but alas she was yet to return and this time her mother was more than worried. The old woman attacked me as soon as I got to the apartment.

‘’where is my daughter?, go and get the poor girl where you hid her or have you killed my daughter just to cover your sins?’’ she wailed loudly, leaving me with no choice than to run out and head to the police station with great fear. It was very obvious Comfort was gone for real, but why on earth did she disappear in such manner?” i wondered nervously.

I was lucky to meet detective Johnson when i got to the state central command. i took my time in telling him my story, leaving out just few details. The detective colored up as he listened. His face was quite expressionless, i couldn’t figure out if he bought my story or not.

‘’Mr Caleb you are really in a hot mess, but what I don’t understand is why a beautiful young graduate will go through all these length just to have you for herself. It’s not as if you are the state governor or the son of a popular politician. Some things didn’t just add up in what you narrated. Anyway by tomorrow if she fails to return, get her pictures, my men and I will start a manhunt. We have to find her on time or you could end up in jail if she’s discovered death. You know how our judicial system works. And if she’s still alive and out there in the streets your wife could be in danger as we talk’’ the detective said very professionally, leaving me totally scared….

”you could end up in jail if she’s discovered dead’ the words kept ringing in my head over and over. I was so terribly scared.
