I’m Vengeance - S01 E08

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 8

The doctor drew close to me but I didn’t like the look on their faces after I asked the question,

“Joan right? He asked and my sister nodded instead while I just looked at him expecting the answer,

“Are you feeling any pains? He asked me.

“Where’s my baby? Patience why are you not answering me? Why am I feeling like something is missing? I asked and she immediately turned to the other side of the bed and held my hand as if she wanted to cry. Duke and Desmond walked in and I quickly asked Duke where my baby went to as if my baby developed legs to walk, and then I looked at Desmond, he couldn’t even look at me, that was when I struggled to come down but I was held.

“Leave me alone! I screamed at them.

“Joan stop it else you’ll loose the stitch! You lost the baby sister, we were more concerned about your life even though we tried. You’ve been unconscious for about 3 days now and I’m so sorry the baby could not survive despite the doctors did an operation on you, she died already, Duke said and I weakly looked at him.

“She died? I asked as tears streamed down my face and Patience hugged me.

“You’ll get another sister as long as you’re alive, She said but I couldn’t whisper a word and I was made to lie down again. It was like I was dead as I laid straight for the doctor to do some checks on me and I watched Desmond slowly leave the room.

I can’t tell how many days I stayed in the hospital as a dead person. I couldn’t talk to anybody neither was I able to eat. One of the days Desmond tried to feed me but I was was not responding,

“Love what are you doing? How are you going to take your medications now and how do you intend to get better with your attitude? I know we lost our baby but its not the end of the world right? He asked and I looked at him. That was when I recognized he was my husband and suddenly I felt great rage I’ve never had before. I violently hit the food from his hand, and before he could ask why I did that, he received 2 silly slaps from me on both cheeks.

“How dare you! I lost my child and you’re here talking trash. Who said that’s not the end of the world for me? What do you know? Was it you who carried her jumping on buses and hanging on trucks in the market with bags on your head? Every sweat I dropped under the sun was for her. Every insult I had from people was for her because I wanted to behold her beautiful face and find comfort. Just once, i wanted having something true i can call my own, something i can look and feel compensated for all I’ve been through, something I can draw strength from. And just when I almost had her, just when I almost held her in my arms, you took her away from me you bastard!, I shouted.

“Joan I did? That is my daughter remember? I held her dead body when she was taken out from you stop saying this i also lost a daughter, Desmond said.

“Shut up You killed her! Shouldn’t I be resting at home with my condition but where was I? When I got married to a man who couldn’t take up his responsibility what was I supposed to do? Are you not ashamed of yourself for calling her a daughter after failing her? Just look at you, I said and Desmond angrily stood up.

“I won’t take this insult Joan! Was I at home relaxing when it happened? Was I not out there struggling myself to fend for us and would you have listened to me if I had stopped you from going? Oh now you Blame me huh? How will you feel if I say its your carelessness you lost my baby! He shouted and I stood up hitting him shouting and Duke ran in immediately holding me.

“How dare you Desmond! Duke shouted and Punched Desmond, and that’s how they held each other scattering things around the room, finally Duke pinned him on the wall,

“I did nothing okay its your sister! Desmond shouted.

“And so what? Isn’t this your fault you shameless beast! What made it her carelessness that she lost the baby when she almost died with the 5 passengers that passed away. You should be grateful that you got married to a woman who struggles so much to feed you, clothe you and even gives you a place to stay and you dare raise your voice on her even in her condition, you’re an infidel and an ungrateful coward! Duke shouted and attempted to punch Desmond again but I held his hand crying and Desmond quickly ran out from the room.

“You don’t deserve this sister, he has no right to hurt you, Duke said to me but all I did was cry as the nurses ran in when they heard the noises.

“What are you doing to yourself? Do you know you’re not properly healed? One of the nurses told me as they laid me in bed and the doctor walked in..

“My goodness What happened here? The doctor asked.

“She wanted fighting with her husband, the nurses replied while I silently sobbed………..

After a week I was discharged and returned home with my siblings. After the fight Duke had with Desmond, they have not been in talking terms neither have I spoken with Desmond. Patience dropped the food she brought in a flask and asked if there’s any other thing I needed but I told her I’m fine, they stayed back begging me to take my drugs and force myself to eat even though there’s no appetite but I only gave a weak smile and thanked them.

“Where is Desmond and why is he not back yet knowing you’ll be discharged today? Duke asked and I heaved.

“Don’t worry you can go, I can manage besides I feel sleepy, I replied.

“Okay sister, we’ll be checking up on you then, Patience said and I waved them bye and locked the door behind.

In the evening I heard a knock on the door, I peeped through the window and saw it was Desmond but I ignored. He tried using the door key but I bolt the door inside and sat down swelling in anger.

He couldn’t call my number because I lost my phone and I stayed quiet and watched him sit outside for more than 30 minutes before I slowly opened the door.

“You were inside? He asked coming in.

“And why? Can’t I stay in my house without disturbance? I asked him back.

“So you were at home and you kept me outside knowing I just returned from work and will be so tired? He asked.

“Really? Oh I wasn’t expecting anyone to visit me today and I have every right to open the door to whoever I want, I replied.

“What does this mean Joan? He asked.

“What does this mean to you Desmond? Let’s take a break! I replied.

“A break? You’re leaving me? He asked.

“I already did, I replied.

“Look Joan just stop it, I know I’ve hurt you and trust me it was never my intention to do that, I never wanted this to happen and I’m struggling so hard right? Don’t tell me its too late, dont tell me there’s no place in your heart to forgive me and let’s go back to how we used to be, I’m sorry please don’t do this, Desmond said and wanted holding my hand but I beat it off.

“You have no right to touch me, and there’s nothing you can say to me right now. You have always wanted to do things your own way, did you think about me? I asked.

“Joan my every thought is about you, how to please you and fulfill the promise I made to you and your father, he replied.

“Oh please shut up! Have you ever done anything to please me? Last I checked I have been the only one pleasing you and dancing to your wishes. If you had listened to me I wouldn’t be in this state I am now, I would have taken care of my my baby but what did you do? You completely rendered me useless! I shouted and had a sharp pain below my abdomen and screamed out and he held me but I struggled with him.

“Love I’m sorry, please give Me some time to make it up to you, please I’m so sorry, Desmond cried holding me but I pushed him off.

“I need a divorce! I dropped and he looked at me.

“What? No Joan if you need a break I’ll give it to you but certainly not this, I won’t do this I won’t leave you, Desmond said.

“Then you’re a fool, I need a divorce and I am filing for it, now get out, I boldly told him.

“Joan, he whispered.

“Get out! What are you doing here by the way? Do you even have the money to pay for the rent? Get out! I shouted and pushed him and he bowed his head.

“I’ll go Joan, but please think carefully about this, I love you so much, Desmond calmly said.

“Shut up and get out! Get out! I violently shouted this time around pushing him out myself and slammed the door behind.

I ignored my neighbors knocking on the door and I cuddled myself crying all alone and eventually slept off. The next day I woke up and slowly opened up to see Desmond just sitting outside and he stood up with pleading eyes greeting me while I smirked and went in which he slowly entered,

“I thought I told you to leave? I asked ignoring his greeting.

“Love I couldn’t bear leaving you alone at home, he replied and I smiled.

“Just say you have no place to go or you needed your bags huh? I asked.

“Joan please stop this, you’re angry and hurt I understand but this action is not the solution and will never be, he said..

“I get it and you’re right, so darling go in there pack your bags and leave, you have 5 minutes to do that, I said.

“Joan…… “Desmond, you have no place in this house nor in my heart. There’s no need staying here as husband and wife when you’re like a complete stranger to me, I want to be alone and if you truly love me please respect my decision, I said and he held my 2 hands and kissed it,

“I’m so sorry I failed you, but please think about this Joan don’t leave me yet, don’t give up on me, Desmond said.

“Desmond leave, pack your bags and get out stop stressing me please! I shouted and he hands up.

“Fine, I’ll go, take care, Desmond said going in to take his bags and he came out looking at me for a while and left the house.

I cleaned my tears and slowly sat down crying assuring myself I made the right decision and I kept telling myself I can do without him, and after some minutes Patience came visiting and met me so down.

“Sister what are you doing? Where’s your husband? She asked lifting me up from the floor I laid.

“I’m asking for a divorce, I replied.

“What? Oh common has it come to that? Won’t that lead you more into depression? She asked.

“Patience then tell me what to do, should I continue in this miserable marriage and die in depression rather? He ruined my life! I shouted on her.

“No you ruined your life when you fell in love helplessly with someone you barely know, you ruined yourself taking responsibilities from the very beginning and made him relax. Fine you want a divorce I won’t stop you, but will you continue sucking around this way? Sister you have to get up on your feet and stop hurting yourself more, Patience said and I shook my head.

“Sister you have to be strong stop this I beg you, She said trying to raise me up as I cried on her……..
