You’re saying that the governor is your father? And he wants you dead?,” I heard Mama Emeka ask behind me.

Emmanuel and I turned to stare at her. We didn’t know she had been listening. After a while, she let out a loud laughter saying the injections she had been giving Emmanuel had probably gotten to his head, making him mutter nonsense.

I watched Mama Emeka leave, before going back to ask Emmanuel more questions.

“Who is Amina? You asked if she had called your number immediately you woke up.”

Emmanuel nodded, “Amina is my fiancee. I was hoping she might have called by now.”

For some reason, knowing he was engaged to someone shattered my heart. It was like I had fallen in love with his kind nature without even knowing it.

“You’re engaged?,” I asked quietly.

He turned to stare at me, probably wondering why my voice sounded sad, before he nodded.

I was about to say something to him, when I heard a knock on the door.

Mama came out of her bedroom, and went to answer it. I heard her begin to shout at whoever was at the door. Her voice was growing louder and angrier every second, so I rushed out only to find Chima standing at the door.

He wasn’t the Chima I knew. He looked neater and gentler with his beards shaved, and his hair cut to a low-cut. His dressing which usually comprised of crazy jeans and polo was now replaced by a shirt and a well ironed trouser.

“I came around to say I’m sorry for how I treated you Nne.

After all, you’re the mother of my baby, and I shouldn’t have said what I said,” Chima apologized.

I stood in surprise, wondering if this was the same Chima that had told me I would only eat his money if I was alive to deliver his baby.

Chima dipped his hands into his pocket, and gave Mama a wad of 1000 naira notes, saying he was keeping his promise to take care of me.

As he turned and began to walk away, Mama seemed to change her mind about him.

“Chima, pls come inside..”

I breathed in hard. What was Mama doing?
