I stared at Chima for a while, wondering if he was joking, but the frown on his face as he stared daggers at me showed he was bent on denying me.

“Nnebuike, is this the man that impregnated you?,” Mama asked, using my full name in anger. I nodded, still shocked and pained at the denial. My mother was about to begin shouting again, when a young lady of about 20 years of age brought her head out of Chima’s door and looked at me with disgust.

“Madam, this your daughter na Ash*wo. How she take don de open her leg for this kind small age. If she gree say she carry Belle, why you go de force am on Chima? E fit be any of this small small boys them wey de touch her pant na,” the girl said while opening the door wider.

Mama rushed the young woman angrily, and landed her a deafening slap.

“Who you call Ash*wo? Who you be?,” Mama screamed back, now re-tying her scarf round her waist in readiness for a fight.

The young woman made to dive for Mama to fight back, but was promptly caught and held in check by the young man that had come with us.

“Young lady calm down. We’ll settle this with words,” he said quietly.

“You for leave me make I tear this old woman,” the girl shouted angrily.

As all this was happening, a very fat woman who lived in the compound came out from her house and stood close to me.

“Chima you say you no sabi this girl?,” the woman asked while staring Chima in the eye.

Chima fidgeted for a while, but maintained his

ground on not knowing me.

“Mama Vero, no bi this small girl wey come here the other day de find Chima say he be her boyfriend?,” she asked a neighbor.

“Ah ah, na she na.”

The young man now interrupted,

“I’m Barrister Emmanuel in charge of the Girls Child Right’, and I’ll like you to come with me to my office as you’re a prime suspect in this case. You wouldn’t like me to involve the police would you,” the man asked with authority as he produced an ID card.

It was Chima’s turn to be shocked now…..
