You killed him”. Raymond heard someone whisper at the door as he was about to leave the toilet.

He looked up.

It was Ryan.

Ryan shivered. “Why did you hit him so much when he was begging you to stop?”.

Raymond glared at him. “Get out of the way”.

Tears filled Ryan’s eyes. “Arnold trusted you so much. How could you kill him?”.

“Get out of the way! I need to drop his body”.

“Why won’t I get out of the way? So that you will kill me the way you killed him?”. He stepped out of the way and glared at Raymond as he walked past him.

He was going to make sure that Raymond is locked behind bars.

“I was the one that put the company’s sample there”. Clara muttered.

Everyone looked up at her.

Mirabel fumed at her. “Why are you taking the blame?”.

“How do you know that I am taking the blame when you were not there when someone had slipped the sample in?”. Clara met her eyes.

I was surprised at Clara.

She was taking the blame for me because she knew that Mirabel had done it.

But all the same, I was not going to allow it. “Clara, you didn’t put the sample in my stuff”.

“I did”. She snatched the sack letter from me. “this should be mine”. She walked out.

I followed her. “Clara, give the sack letter back to me!!!”.

She stopped and turned. “My elder brother died in prison because he was condemned. Just few months after his death, they found the real killer. Since then, I had told myself that if anyone is condemned wrongly, I will take the blame”.

“How did you know that I didn’t do it?”.

“Mirabel overheard when I and Diana were gossipping about how you and Raymond were gradually falling in love. I saw the look on her face that day. Like the tiger that she is”.

“Where will you go?”.

“My boyfriend has plans of flying abroad, so don’t worry about me”. She patted me on my shoulder and walked into her office.

Mirabel rushed out breathlessly.

She was sobbing uncontrollably.

I wondered what was making her cry like that.

Diana rushed out. “How can Mirabel loose both siblings in just a year?”.

I gasped and turned to her. “Both siblings? What are you talking about?”.

“Arnold Alexander is dead”.

Tears filled Raymond’s eyes.

It was the first time that I had seen Raymond cry.

I placed a comforting arm around him.

“Arnold should have left the case for me! Why was he so forward?”.

We sat at the bus station and remained in that position as I watched him grieve.

Raymond met his mother’s eyes. “I am not marrying Swanta”.

Swanta panicked. “Raymond?”

Mrs Maxson cleared her throat. “Do you have anyone in mind?”.

“Yeah, Rosa Harrison. She is the one I love. If you can’t allow us, just forget about marriage”.

“All over my dead body!”. She fired at him. “That promiscuous irresponsible bitch?”.

“The ‘promiscuous irresponsible bitch’ is still a virgin. Stop judging people by what you see instead of what you know about them!!!”.

“The son of a righteous judge has to marry a righteous lady”. Joel Maxson said sternly.

“Rosa is the nicest girl that I have ever seen”.

Tears filled Swanta’s eyes. “You gold-digger…”.

Raymond glared at her. “I knew you had a true colour. You sound just like Mirabel”.

Joel Maxson rose to his feet. “Swanta or whatever you call yourself, leave my house and never come back here”.

Mrs Maxson fumed. “If you can call your supposed husband-to-be a gold digger, that means you were part of the bastards that called my husband a golddigger”.

Swanta sobbed uncontrollably. “I am sorry. I have never gossiped that way all my life! I swear”.

“I said leave this place!!!”. Joel Maxson fired at her.

Mirabel was carrying all her things out of her office when i walked into the company.

I rushed to her. “What do you think you are doing?”.

Tears filled her eyes. “Killing my brother and sister is too much. Since we have a dumb detective like Raymond, I d’ rather deal with it lawlessly”.

“You can’t stain your hands! You are the only daughter your father has left!”.

“I don’t care!!!”.

“So you think your resigning from Sparkles will change anything?”.

“It will change a lot of things! leave the way!!!”.

I watched Diana weep as she ate her meal at the cafeteria.

I joined her at the table.

She made eyes at me and looked away.

“You miss Clara a lot”.

“Joshua Gilbert is gone”. She whispered.

“Joshua Gilbert? Who is Joshua Gilbert?”.

“Arnold Anderson”.

“What do you mean?”.

“He had composed the song, ‘twinkle, twinkle Little Star and ‘my mother’ for Ann Taylor and Jane Taylor. Gretta was Ann Taylor, Clara was Jane Taylor, while I was Sarah Hale”.

“Was Ann Taylor not Jane Taylor’s mother?”.

“Yes. Because Gretta and Clara were so close and told each other everything, we had named them that way”.

“…but Clara had told me that you and Gretta were closer friends”.

“She was only pulling your legs. Those days, the two friends would tell each other everything and keep me in the dark because they felt that I was too shallow and lousy. Those days, we would sit in a circle and Joshua Gilbert will play a violin. I was always the first to step out and sing, ‘Mary had a little lamb, then, Ann Taylor, who was Gretta, would sing, ‘Who sat and watched my infant head’, and Jane Taylor, who was Clara would sing, Twinkle, twinkle, little star”.

Raymond had told me that the last song that Arnold had sang before he died was twinkle twinkle Little Star.

Where was Clara?

I looked up at Diana. “What is Clara’s shoe size?”.

“Shoe size? She is size forty one. You want to get a shoe for her?”.

Raymond drove to Clara’s apartment.

Diana had given us her home address.

It was behind Nathan’s building.

Immediately we parked at the front of her house, she stepped out, holding a plate of food she had covered with another plate.

She walked to Nathan’s building and knocked.

Nathan opened the door and kissed her.

It said it all.

Clara, who was Gretta’s best friend had been the woman that Nathan had been sleeping with all along.
