The Sacrifice - S01 E04

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 4

For two nights I stayed with no food. I was starving to death. I couldn’t let Grace, the twelve years old boy out of my mind.

So many thoughts were creeping into my mind.

“His name is Grace. Do males bear Grace? Why does he have a woman-head tattoo at his back? Why did he come into my life? Since I met him, my dead mother keeps hunting me. Why? Why?!” I groaned painfully. I no longer feel my head, headaches kept hammering me. My hands were shaking and my stomach rumbling. The worms in my tummy had cried enough because I had had nothing to eat.

“Grace, I promised to protect you. But now you are gone. Why do you bear GRACE?”

I slept. Few minutes later, I was awoken by the rattling of chains. I opened my eyes and saw a hefty man. He opened the cage and threw me out.

These outlandish people crowded everywhere. They added in number. I wondered what was happening over there. The hefty man bonded me with the chains and reeled me into a wheel. As he was going further into the crowd, the crowd spaced out, creating an isle for him to walked through with the wheel and me in it.

An inferno was burning, He left me close to it. I almost melted. I fought hard to loosen the the chain but couldn’t.

Moments later, I saw two figures came out from the crowd. One who was carrying an ‘ofor’ was a woman and the other was a child. I couldn’t fish out who they were for it was dark untill the came closer to the burning flame.

“Mom, Grace. Grace Oh my God” sumptuous joy claimed me. “You are alive!” I wanted to embrace him, to express how much happiness settled in me but the restriction of being tied down made me to only sob.

I turned to my mother who I thought was dead and asked her ” I thought you were dead?” She ignored me and raised a Calabash to heaven and began to hum. She did that for few seconds and brought it down.

“You are as stubborn as your father Ifeoma. I hate stubborn people. And don’t hesitate to kill whosoever that comes my way.” Her enchanting voice roared.

“Mother you are dead. Aren’t you?” I asked again. But with boldness this time.

“Ha ha ha” she laughed hysterically and opened her eyes wide.

My mother was a very beautiful and good woman. She had loved me and my siblings. When my elder sister had a fatal accident that claimed her life, my mother stayed for days with no food. She was unconsolable. Every four years, one of the siblings died. The one that shattered my mother was the death of our last born. I mom was completely devastated. I became the only child she had left and four years left to bid the world bye, since it had become a norm. And any year that passed, I weep because I was approaching to my own death too. Four years after our last born died, I came home and found my mother dead.

My dad died when I was 18. My mom worked hard and made sure we never lacked.

But I’m still in shock. How sure was I that she was my mother. She can’t be my mother, a virtuous woman that I emulate. My mentor.

“Who are you, you witch? Who?” I questioned with anger “answer me!” I thundered.

“I’m your mother, the women whose face is drawn at the back of this boy..” she boasted, pointing at Grace. I stared at Grace. I noticed his hand was tied with chain.

“I am 250years old. I have drank many blood. So many blood” she emphasized. ” The blood of my husband, I have drank. The blood of my six children, I have also taken. Just to.. just to keep myself younger. But when it was time for your own blood to be taken…. Ifeoma. Ifeoma. You killed me.”

“What! Mom. You are heartless. Why am I even calling you mother, you murderer. I hate you..”

“Ifeoma You killed me” she repeated

“You even had the gots to hinder my killing of this boy. What are you made of? What are you made of?” She r

“God. I am made of God” I boldly answered.
