Eliza's pot of Egusi - S01 E01

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 1

I was terrified.

Though it was her usual kind of way to react whenever she's provoked by our messes or dubious behaviors; myself and my two younger siblings, but this seemed to be different.

"Why is mummy shouting my name like that?"

I wondered as I ran through the hallway.

When I got to the kitchen door I could see her stare into her pot of egusi soup that she cooked early that morning before Everyone left for church, except me who did not go to church with the others.

I had stayed back when others (mom and my siblings) left home to attend church service early that day.

But, I wondered why she was staring into her pot.

"Praises na Who chuuuk hand inside my egusi?" She asked me while she was pointing at the pot.

Defensively I responded ASAP;

"Mummy it's not me oh"

"Somebody chuuk hand inside this soup comot two meat inside." She insisted.

"Ahhhhh, somebody carried your meat?"

"Nooooo, somebody carried my bone. Is it French that I'm speaking? I say who carry meat inside this pot and you are asking me silly questions"

Eliza yelled on the top of her voice and slapped with her left palm angrily on the kitchen sink causing the spoons to fall to the floor.

"Ahhh mummy is not me ohh, I don't know who carried the meat from the pot I sweár"

To prove my Innocence i touched my tongue with the tip of my index finger and raised it towards the ceiling as I took a step backward away from her.

I was still sweàring to God when my younger siblings walked into the kitchen and asked what was happening. I enquired from the two if any of them had taken meat from the pot but the both of them responded negatively.

"Meeeeat? haaaaaaaaa, nawaa ohh, for this house? Mummy maybe na rat chop am" They both spoke randomly in defence.

"Yes it's true, it's rat " I shouted from one corner where I stood because i knew slap might just start flying here and there soon.

"So the three of you are trying to tell me that it was spirit that entered this kitchen and open my pot abi. No problem. I will show you people that i am your mother. I did not kill my own mother so you people will not kill me in this house....." She was angry. "....Praises climb up there and bring down that camera for me." mom pointed towards the ceiling.

I looked up to see what she was pointing at and behold it was a digital camera hanging firmly below the ceiling with the support of two thin ropes.

She probably had placed it up there to catch the house-hold thief because last week she left her pot of stew in the kitchen and some pieces of meat went missing and everyone denied it.

On seeing the camera i said to myself inwardly;

"Chimo, I am deåd"

Infact I was deader than dead because I was beginning to wonder how i could join them in watching the video footage of myself taking meat from the pot that morning.

In guilt I started crying and I thought I should just tell her i was the household rat who took the meat, maybe she could forgive me.

"Mummy I'm sorry, I took the missing meat" I sobbed.

With tears in my eyes I expected there would or might be a chance of forgiveness since I wholeheartedly admit it was me who committed the crime.

But no, Eliza never lets any of our sins go unpunished.

"Go outside and cut two strong cane from that guava tree for me. Make sure you cut your size."

I looked at my younger siblings expecting them to plead for forgiveness on my behalf, but the both of them threw their faces away not wanting to intervene so Eliza won't involve them in my purnishment.

No one dares Eliza.
