It was a sad day in the entire village as everyone was sad. There was silence everywhere and at night the village was unusually quiet. There was no eating in most of the huts.

But after few days the normal lifestyle started coming back and the villagers were gradually regaining themselves. The elders sat in a meeting deliberating on how to stop theses white men that are gradually taking away the young and vibrant men and women away. After hours and hours of sitting and discussing, they seemed not to be getting anywhere and so the meeting was dismissed.

Ukeh who was waiting for Dede his fathers elder brother to return from the meeting was eventually relieved when he saw Dede walking towards the hut. From the look on his face, Ukeh understood it was another fruitless meeting. He had wanted to follow his uncle to the meeting but Dede had insisted the meeting was for elders and not for children.

After welcoming his uncle, he asked to know the outcome of the meeting, but just as he feared, the elders arrived at nothing. Ukeh then suggested that the elders invite the youths because the matter at hand was not just a matter for elders Aline and that it concerns majorly the youths so they ought to be in the meetings so as to plan on the way forward from this bondage they have found themselves. As Ukeh spoke to his uncle Dede, he could see that his uncle was not interested in what he was saying neither was he interested in talking about it to the elders. Ukeh then made up his mind to talk with the elders by himself. He left his uncle who stood staring at him.

Ukeh was not so interested in fighting but he was scared for his family, his sister Nti, his mother, his girlfriend Nma. He didnt know what will happen if anything should happen to them. As he left his uncle, he went straight to Nma’s place. And they sat in silence as Ukeh told her all he planned to discuss with the elders. Nma was scared for Ukeh. She knew he was a brave and stubborn man and that was why she loved him, but she also knows that he was soft at heart and can easily be hurt. She urged him to be careful, telling him that he was all she has and can not survive it if anything should happen to him. He placed her head on his chest as he reminded and promised her that he was the son of a lion and nothing can happen to him if he does not permit it! She smiled and they both kept quiet as they listened to the sound of the birds in the sky!
