After dismissal, I had ran down to the back of the staffroom and waited for Mr Adam. I didn’t know why but I desperately want to walk home with him. I wanted us to talk about many things. I wanted to smell his fragrance, to hear his voice and to…

To just feel his presence around me.

He came out of the staffroom when everyone else had left for home. When he saw me, he stiffened, surprised to see me waiting patiently for him.

I prostrated. ” Good afternoon, Mr Adam.”

He moved towards me. My heart fluttered like wings as he came close. His fragrance, filling my senses with delight.

” Katelyn? What’re you doing here at such a time like this. It’s nearly 2:30.pm. Shouldn’t you be home.”

” A-actually, I-umm… I was wondering… If…if you and I could…walk home together,” I stuttered, wondering if I took it too far.

He raised an eyebrow. ” Why didn’t you walk home with your friends?”

I gathered up enough courage and told him. ” Because I don’t have friends. I want to talk to you about something, sir. I needed to see you privately that’s why I waited. If you don’t mind, would it be okay if we walk home together so I can tell you my problem?”

He hesitated for a while then nodded. ” Alright. Let’s go.”

I felt happy. I nearly jumped for joy. Initially I had thought he’d turn me down but he didn’t. I moved up to him and we walked together down the lane. We walked in silence and I noticed he kept a respectful distance from me. Such a gentleman but it would’ve made me more happier if I held his hand.

Then we came around a bend that looked pretty lonely except for a few cars. He stopped and turned to look at me.

” Well, I’m listening. What’s this thing you want to talk to me about?”

I stared at him, feeling my heart hammering by my side, my blood racing, my spirit ablaze with desire. This was stupid but I was enjoying this feeling.

Mr Adam was cool as ice with a deadpan expression on his face. He waited to hear what I had to say.

Except for some few vehicles that raced past us, we were all alone in the street.

Taking a deep breath, I opened my mouth and spoke. ” I have a problem, Mr Adam. It’s my academics. In class, I’m the worst student in all subjects. English, maths and others. Junior WAEC is by the corner but I’m not sure of passing the exams. I really s--k at school work. It’s been a problem since I graduated out of primary school.”

Mr Adam looked sad. ” That’s too bad.”

I glanced down at my feet and tried to summon enough courage that I could muster. ” So, I’ve come to ask if you….” I paused.

He cocked his head to one side. ” If I’ll what?”

I raised my face and stared at him fully into his eyes. ” If you’ll be my private lesson teacher.”

He opened his mouth but no words came out. He seemed taken aback by my request and it took him ten seconds to recover.

I didn’t let him think, I was talking fast now. ” If it is money, I’m willing to pay any amount be it that you tutor me. My mother will pay. I’ll have a word with her. Just please, be my private teacher. If you don’t help me, no one else would.”

He stared at me, his eyes boring into mine, causing me to melt inside out. I felt like collapsing.

” Katelyn, I….” He paused as he tried to think. ” I’ve never tutored for a student privately. This is something I’m just getting new into I don’t think it’s…”

” Please, sir,” I pleaded, grabbing hold of his hand. ” I need you to help me. If you don’t grant me this simple request, I’ll fail my junior WAEC woefully and I’m sure you wouldn’t like that to happen to your student, would you?”

He said nothing. Then he drew back his hand gently and stared at my feet.
