$$$$$$$$.. After searching carefully, Tayo came across Bisi who everyone recommended as a woman with good character. Tayo didn’t hasitate to marry her to replace his gone wife. Modupe was delighted to have another mother after loosing her mother. She thought now she have someone she can confide in. They live peacefully and happily.modupe count herself lucky to have a kind-hearted stepmother.she heard her friends talking about how stepmothers can be terrible but her own case was different.

……. Months turned to years. Bisi have been nice to Modupe for the first year. But things changed immediately Bisi discovered she was pregnant. She turned her kindness towards Modupe to hatred. “At your age you cannot do things properly like other children. You are no longer a baby. Before I come back from the market, fill this drum with water, wash the plates sweep the floor and fetch the fire wood from the farm”Bisi commanded . ” Ok ma” Modupe answered as she put on her uniform hurriedly. She was already late for school. She wake up late because she was doing assignment given to them by their mathematics teacher, which took her the whole night. “They will be given us assignment as if we in the University. Iam sure not all the students will do this assignment sef”she mumbled as she picked her school back and ran out of her room. She ran to the kitchen to check if there’s left over Amala so she could eat before going. “You didn’t wake up early is it me you are expecting to fix something for you to eat??? A full grown up woman like you?? ” Bisi retorted as she saw Modupe twisting in the locally built kitchen. “Oohh sorry ma” Modupe said and dashed out with the speed of light. Hunger disappeared immediately she noticed she was very late.

…………. “All JSS2 students should come here” the school head girl ordered and student followed her. She showed them a large space for them to clear.. and wouldn’t be allow to enter class till break.

….. “Ahhhhhaaa, IAM finished ooo, the assignment I spent the whole night doing is to be submitted before break oo. How will I do now. Assuming I slept on time yesterday I wouldn’t have been late. Anyway I must look for a way to submit this assignment”Modupe thought as she collect a Cutlass from one of the prefect.

……………… She prayed earnestly to see one of her classmate to help her submit it. “Dora, please come and help me submit my assignment please”, she jumped in excitement at sighting Dora her classmate.

After the closing bell rang, Modupe ran home quickly. She remembered what her stepmother told her to do, if she didn’t do them, it is going to be another round of merciless beating and insensitive words. Whenever her father is around she feel alittle bit comfortable BECAUSE he do intervene in most of the cases. But now that he is not around nobody will stand in the gab for her. Her father is so in to farming that atimes he do spend a whole week there. He made a hut, and have enough food with him over there.

She reached home and ran to the kitchen, her stomach have been complaining since morning. She opened the pots and were all empty… “Huuun she didn’t cook?” She grumbled. She carried a tuber of yam, boiled and ate it. She picked her bucket and ran to the stream….

She fetched just half of the drum and began to feel dizzy. “Lemme wash the dishes first before going to the stream again, may be is because of the too much walking that IAM feeling dizzy” she thought as she gathered the dishes at the back of the kitchen for wash.

*****It was evening when Bisi returned from her market……. She checked the drum it wasn’t full.. and the firewood was just half of what she asked Modupe to fetch. “Modupe, wa! What happened? Why don’t you fetch the water I asked to fetch?? The fire wood I gathered yesterday in the farm are more than this, where are the rest? ” Bisi questioned meanly and Modupe began to shake… I.. I… I was fetching the water when…… I.. be. gan to feel diz. zy” Modupe stammered and a thunderous slap landed on her soft cheeks…..

“Sooo what have you been doing since then? What do you want me to use tomorrow in the market” Bisi thundered. And Modupe stood there helplessly. Her father is not around to intervene.
