••••AUTHOR’S POV•••••

Collette shivered under the blanket Temi covered her with. Her hair was soaked and so were her clothes.

Thankfully, Temi had prepared a hot bath for her when she arrived.

Collette had spent over an hour in hot waters inside the bathtub, her eyes closed as she thought of many things.

It was minutes later after she was done drying her hair did Temi returned to the room with a warm blanket and a tray of hot chocolate.

” Thank you,” Collette said, taking a steaming cup of chocolate as she sat on Temi’s bed. ” I’m sorry for inconveniecing you, Temi. Your parents won’t mind me staying for the night, would they?’

Temi shook her head, staring pitifull at Collette. ” Not at all. You can stay as long as you like, dear friend.”

” I’m not staying for long,” she said, sipping from the cup. ” I’m leaving for home as early as possible tomorrow.”

Temi sat beside her. ” You’re leaving your sisters?”

Collette hide her face. ” I have to.”

Temi bite her lips. ” Collette, is Lucy in trouble?”

Collette Lowered her eyelids to prevent tears from dropping off. ” She’ll be alright. Let’s not worry about her.”

” Does she know you’re leaving?”

” She doesn’t have to know.”

” Is that why you got slapped?” Temi asked, frowning. ” The hand printed on your face. Who hit you?”

Collette didn’t answer. She sipped from her cup again and sniffed a catarrh from her nose.

” Collette,” Temi called.

Collette looked around, her eyes drawn down in a frown. ” What is it?”

Temi’s face was screwed in worries. ” You haven’t talked to me ever since you got here. I’m soo dead worried about you. When you came knocking at my door looking all drenched from the rain, I knew instantly something definitely was wrong. Talk to me, please. What happened?”

Collette stared at her for sometime then she looked away. ” I rather don’t want to talk about it. I made a mistake coming here that’s all that really matters,” she frowned at her naked laps. ” And I ain’t making the same mistake ever again.”

” Does this has anything to do with Lucy?”

Collette closed her eyes, sipping slowly from her cup. ” Pretty much but I don’t want to talk about it.”

” You don’t?”

Collette nodded, her eyes still closed. ” No I don’t.”

” Girls?” Temi’s mother opened the door into Temi’s room. ” There’s a visitor for your friend, Temi.”

Temi stared quizzingly at her mother. ” A visitor for my friend?”

Temi’s mother nodded. ” She says she wants to know if her sister, Chi-Chi is with you and I told her yes.”

Temi glanced at Collette from the corner of her eyes.

Collette’s back was turned to them, a deep frown on her face, her eyes closed, the cup to her lips.

” Collette?”

” I don’t want to see her,” Collette said sharply but in a low cracked voice.

Temi mouth went downward. She turned to her mom. ” Collette doesn’t want to see her. Tell her she’s asleep.”

Temi’s mom looked just as worried. ” Actually, She mentioned in case Collette chose not to come, I should ask her if she’d seen their little sister, Lucy.”

” Haven’t seen her,” Collette answered quickly. ” Please tell her to go away.”

Temi’s mom shook her head, sadly. ” Well, she told me to tell you that Lucy’s missing. She hasn’t been back home for four hours.”

Collette’s eyes burst opened. Her eyes travelled to the bedside clock.

It was a quarter after eleven and the storm was still crazy outside.

Four hours ago?

Taking a deep breath, Collette stood up with the cup of chocolate in her hand. She walked passed Temi’s mom, her eyes closed, her frown set and hard as she went over the passage towards the living room.

She saw Charlotte standing in the middle of the sitting room.

Charlotte was wet to her skin and there was a look of worry and fear in her eyes as she turned around and stared at her twin sister.

Her eyes still closed in a frown, Collette walked towards her and stood before her. She raised her face to meet Charlotte’s and her eyes opened, her frown thickening.

” What do you want?” She asked gravely, her eyes shinning.

Charlotte gulped. She could still see the red patch on Collette’s cheeks where she’d slapped her.

” Lucy’s missing,” she said in a strangled voice.

” She isn’t with me,” Collette replied sharply. ” I haven’t seen her.”

Charlotte stared at the steaming cup of chocolate in her hand and the blanket Collette held tightly to herself with her left hand, shielding her nakedness completely.

” Collette, I’m worried about her,” she said urgently, her eyes getting wide. ” It’s been four hours since she ran out of the house. It’d soon be midnight and I can’t find her anywhere.”

Collette’s frown went deeper. ” Checked Damian yet?”

Charlotte nodded. ” He doesn’t know where she is.”

Collette took a deep breath but deep inside her, she was dead worried.

A red alarm blew in her mind but she shut it off instantly. Somehow, she knew Lucy wasn’t safe in the dangerous storm outside.

” What do we do?” Charlotte was panting, pacing up and down, her forehead creased with massive worry. ” If mom and dad called tomorrow and Lucy’s not at home, I’ll be toast!”

Collette didn’t answer her, she stood for a while, thinking.

Then she gently dropped the cup of chocolate on the table and returned back to Temi’s room.

Charlotte watched her go, an uneasiness eating away in the pits of her stomach.

Collette returned thereafter, dressed up in new dry clothes. She had an umbrella with her.

Temi was running after her.

” Are you crazy?!” Temi shouted. ” It’s late already. Don’t go out in the storm. It’s too dangerous, Collette.”

But Collette didn’t answer her nor did she stop. She kept on walking.

” Where are you going to?” Charlotte asked as she brushed passed her.

” I’m going out there to find my little sister,” Collette said quietly and she spread opened the umbrella and stepped into the dangerous rain storm.

Charlotte and Temi ran after her, stopping at the door entrance.

They saw Collette walking in the rain, undeterred from finding her little sister.

Collette held her face stiff and her eyes set in alert as she crossed the deserted road and headed down the dark lonely street.

” Has she lost her mind?!” Temi shouted, tearing her hair out. ” She’s going to get herself killed.”

She turned around but Charlotte wasn’t there beside her anymore.

Charlotte had dashed back into her car and had blared the engines to life. She did a reverse and sped towards where Collette was.

She pictured Collette out from the highlights of her headlamp, walking alone by the side of the road.

She quickly cut the engines to a crawl beside Collette.

The windows winded down and Charlotte’s head poked out. ” Collette, Collette! Get in.”

But Collette didn’t stop. She kept moving, her eyes closed, her brows drawn in a frown.

Charlotte knew no matter what happens, Collette wasn’t going to stop. She decided to use a different tactic.

There was no way she was letting Collette walk alone in this dangerous weather.

Cautiously, she swerved the car to the front and blocked Collette, stopping her from moving any further.

Collette stopped, glaring at Charlotte as she jumped out of the car and raced towards her.

” Collette,” Charlotte cried, shielding her face from the harsh rain. ” Can you stop this foolishness? It’s too dangerous you’re go—”

The moment she grabbed Collette’s arm, Collette freed her hand and swung her a slap to the face.

SMACK ‼️‼️‼️

Charlotte held her face and returned her eyes back to Collette. The slap didn’t have much impact on her but the fact Collette slapped her made her knew how hurt her twin sister was.

Collette’s eyes were pooled with tears. ” I’m going to slap you again if you don’t move out of my way.”

” Collette I–”

SLAP!

Charlotte controlled her anger with an effort. ” Look, there’s no need to–”

SLAP!

” Will you sto–”

SLAP!

Charlotte bowed her head, holding her face, clenching her teeth as drops of tears fell off her face. ” Please stop, okay. I’m soo sorry.”

She waited to be slapped again but Collette didn’t slap her. She glanced up to see Collette staring fixedly at her, the raining pouring over the two twins.

Charlotte bite her lips, feeling the heavy rain wetting her clothes as she stared at the shadowy figure of Collette under the umbrella.

” I’m so sorry, Collette–for everything. I know I messed up. Give me a chance. I won’t speak another word. Just…let me help you. Help me as well, let’s look for our sister together.”

Collette Lowered her eyelids and looked away.

For a while, there was silence. No one spoke a word.

The rain fell heavily on the two of them but no one made an attempt to move.

Then collect spoke, finally turning to meet Charlotte’s eyes. ” Alright. Just don’t drive crazily.”

Charlotte couldn’t believe her ears. ” I won’t drive crazy. I promise.”

Collette stepped away from her and went around the car to the passenger seat where she opened the door and stepped in. Charlotte followed suite, settling herself before the wheels.

The car made a U-turn and sped away, splashing water in the air.

Ottis Okon stared down at his wrinkled hands, frowning. He was gradually losing his youth. He was getting old.

Grabbing his walking stick, he walked slowly with a leap towards the window.

Peering outside the window, he tasted the chilly wind and flared his nostrils.

” They’re coming,” he turned around and smiled to himself. ” She’s coming.”

Then he leaped towards the only table in the room. He sat down on a wooden stood and placed his walking stick on the table.

From a chest of drawers nearby, he drew out a tiny toy car and placed it on the table. He also brought out a kola nut, broke it into two and chewed it.

Taking out a new pair of batteries from his pocket, he inserted them inside the toy car and switched it on.

He placed the car on the ground and watched it with amusement as it moved around restlessly on the ground. He watched it for a while before he ignored it and returned back to the table.

On his left side was a pile of his book “THE PRIEST”. There was also an ink tub and a feathered pen. He took the pen and drew some strange patterns on the table.

He hummed softly, chewing slowly on his kola nut.

The noise of the moving toy car on the floor filled his ears but he wasn’t distracted with what he was doing.

The moment he was done, he returned the pen back to the tub and took a deep breath.

His eyes returned back to the toy car. She’s close. Collette was close by.

Running his wrinkled hand over his grey dreadlocked hair, Okon reflected on what happened earlier.

The lightening had struck those men dead but why the delay? Why until she was raped?

He drummed his hand on his table as he thought. Then he remembered Collette again.nl

Collette.

She was coming but she had no idea where to find her sister.

Where to find him.

He had to lead her here.

Glancing down at the drawn patterns on the table, Okon dropped his right hand on the strange patterns and closed his eyes.

Outside his window, the sky rumbled violently with thunder.

The noise of the moving toy car rented his ears, racing around the room without stopping.

His eyes still shut, Okon’s lips moved. ” Stop!!!”

Suddenly, the toy car came to an abrupt stop. The noise died off gravely.

Opening his eyes, he glanced down at the patterns he’d drawn on the table.

Not surprising enough, the patterns had disappeared. They were no longer there on the table.

Outside his apartment, he heard a car engine dying off.
