•••••••AUTHOR’S POV••••••••••••

” YOU ROTTEN SWINE! HOW DARE YOU TOUCH HER‼️” Collette yelled at her face.

She was holding Charlotte by the Front of her shirt, against the wall, her teeth peel off in a seething snarl.

Charlotte stared down at her sister, looking all white and scared like a rabbit.

Collette glanced over to the floor where Lucy laid, half conscious from the slaps she’ve received from Charlotte and her eyes went red and heated.

” Never!” Collette spat out, shaking her roughly. ” Never in your entire miserable life touch her again! If you ever hurt her again, I’ll make sure I kill you myself!”

Charlotte swallowed but then she regained her composure. Taking a deep breath, she summoned some courage and pushed Collette away from her.

” Don’t pull that with me,” Charlotte said, her voice racing. ” I know you two are lovers.”

” Are you out of your mind?” Collette yelled at her and it was surprising how louder her voice was than Charlotte’s. ” Was that your stupid reason for hitting her like an animal?!”

” I hit her so she can change!” Charlotte yelled back. ” There’s no way in hell I’m letting her end up gay like you!”

Collette gritted her teeth bitterly at her. She walked up to Charlotte and yelled at her face. ” For your information, you slutty b!tch, you’re not the one with the moral stand to judge Lucy and I. Whatever she is it’s none of your business!”

Charlotte went red in the face. ” I don’t care! I may not be perfect, but I know a taboo when I see one. She’s my sister and I care about her a lot. I’m sticking my neck out for her. I’d rather she change than end up becoming someone like you.”

Collette didn’t react, she balled her hands into fist, glaring at her twin sister in a bloody disturbing silence.

” You were going to kill her, weren’t you?” Collette said quietly. ” Just like you nearly killed me.”

Charlotte felt something like a cold hand clutching her heart. She remembered the deep scar on Collette’s head the day she fought her off the stairs.

This happened years ago. They were little girls fighting over a Barbie doll. The doll belonged to Collette but Charlotte wanted the doll all to herself. While fighting, being the eldest and strongest of them both, Charlotte had pushed her down the stairs of their old home.

Collette had tumbled down the flight of stairs to the base of the hard floor, crashing with an opened wound to her head.

That night, Collette underwent surgery to stop the external and internal bleeding from her brain.

Fortunately, Collette survived but that was the very last time she ever spoke to her sister. She became hard, cold and impersonal to everyone that Charlotte became scared of her.

She was afraid to play with her sister because she couldn’t face her again after what she’s done. They grew up apart from each other until the divorce came in.

” T-That….that was an accident and you know it,” Charlotte stuttered, shaking off the memory. ” Besides, I told you I was sorry but you shut me out instead!”

” That’s right,” Collette pointed at her with her finger. ” I shut you out because you nearly killed me over a Dollie that belonged to me. And now you want to kill Lucy as well because we’re lovers, isn’t that right?!”

” I wasn’t trying to kill her!”

” Then why hitting her so brutally, huh?! You’re always hurting me, Chole!” Collette screamed at her face. ” Lucy and I are more than just lovers. She saved my life. I was depressed and was on the verge of taking my life. My life was a mess and I thought ending it would give it more meaning and peace. But Lucy was there for me to give me a reason to live again. She saved me. That’s why I’ll always love her. It’s not her fault she’s into girls, I stole her first kiss to get back at my guardian at school but then I realized my mistake. I pushed her away to stop her from becoming me but she kept coming back to me. We were destined to become sisters. If I knew we were going to end up as sisters, I wouldn’t have stolen her first kiss from her. Fate brought her to me and I got to fall in love with her. She’s the only one that’s ever made me happy. And now you’re hurting her. How dare you?!”

” How dare I?” Charlotte yelled back at her. ” You’re ruining her life. Can’t you see this lesbian thing is eating her up like a disease?! She nearly hooked another girl before you got here. If it weren’t for me, she’d be hanging out with other girls!’

Collette frowned. ” Lucy is foolish and naive. She’s just a kid. What she needs is counseling and not getting beaten up on. For crying out loud, Lucy’s not a punch bag. You have no right to hit her. You have no right to hit anyone! Everything your hand touches is bad news.”

” I’m glad you mentioned counseling,” Charlotte pointed out. ” The both of you need it. You’re both d--n lucky mom and dad are in Paris or I’d have let the cat out of the bag a long time ago.”

” Listen, you can—”

” No you listen for once!” Charlotte yelled as she felt more courageous. ” You have to get over this star-girl complex. For once in your perfect life, you screwed up. You blew it. You choked. You made a big mistake and now you have to take responsibility for it. If you were the only one with this gay problem sh!t, I’d say do whatever you want. But if you think I’m going to stand around and watch you ruin Lucy, you’re out of your head. Face fact’s, Collette. You lost. Give up.”

An angry silence filled the room. ” You can really be a b!tch, you know that?”

” I just want to make sure that you—”

” That I what?” Cooler interrupted, her eyes filled with anger and tears. ” That I blame myself? That I think it’s my fault? Don’t worry—I do. I hold myself one hundred percent responsible. I’m the one that puts this whole thing in motion and it’ll haunt me for the rest of my life. Until the day I die, there won’t be a single day that I don’t feel guilty about turning Lucy into what she is. It was a mistake that isn’t ever going to happen again.”

” You should feel guilty.”

” Don’t tell me how I should feel,” Collette said, her voice shaking. ” Lucy is also my sister. I love her dearly that’s why I’m cutting off our relationship with each other. Incest is something I’m never going to commit. No one is more concerned about her welfare than I do.”

” Too late,” Charlotte yelled. ” Too fvcking late. You two already committed incest a long time ago. I’ve been patient with this little brat for a very long time now. I won’t seat back and watch her go Gaga over girls. It’s about time you both end this stupid disgusting lifestyle of yours. I understand if you decide not to change but Lucy’s far too young to be involved in this sh!t. Everything ends today!”

Collette kept her breathing down at a slower pace. ” You don’t know, Lucy, Charlotte. She’s not the vilian here. You just showed up and made her look like a monster simply because she chose me over boys.”

As Charlotte fell silent, Collette continued, “This isn’t about Lucy, Chole. It’s about me. You’re always self centered and strong-headed. You don’t consider other people’s opinions about themselves. You don’t listen, you only act accordingly to what pleases you. This is definitely the reason why I pushed you away. We are all human beings and we all make mistakes. You gave Lucy the beating for my mistakes because you’re afraid of me. That’s cowardice. And that’s something I can never forgive you for. Lucy’s only human. She has the right to love whoever she chooses. You can’t force a horse to drink water, can you? You lack patience, understanding and virtues to deal with Lucy. I can do a better job than you. You’ve only known her for two weeks. I’ve known her for three months.”

Charlotte bite her lips, glaring at her. ” Three months and yet you could’nt change her?”

Collette’s eyes burned. ” I can’t change her, Chole. And neither can you. No one can change her. Change doesn’t happen in a day. It takes time and some self willpower. The moment Lucy decides to Change, she will change. I want a better life for Lucy more than you do. I’m trying to break out of this lifestyle over the years myself. You have no idea what what I’ve been through this whole time. I spend my whole life fighting myself. I just pray and let go to God to do his will. You don’t know what it feels like to break out of something you’re Soo deep into. It’s tough, very tough. Lucy’s having a hard time accepting the change you’re bombarding her ears with. If you were reasonable enough, you wouldn’t have hit her. But no, you’re not reasonable. You chose to hit her. You chose to hurt her. What makes you think hitting her would make her Change? You’re only making matters worse. I hate you for this. No one hits Lucy and gets away with it, not you nor anyone else!”

Charlotte was sweating. She could read her mistakes from Collette’s speech but she wasn’t going to give in to her younger sister.

” You claim you care about Lucy but you don’t,” Charlotte said sharply. ” If you really wanted her to change, you wouldn’t be here in Lagos. You’re nothing but a distraction. Lucy was doing all fine under my care. She was about getting used to the idea of dating a boy. She’s supposed to go out on a date with Damian. It would’ve been the perfect opportunity for our sister to change and become straight again. But she decided against it because you’re here!”

Collette couldn’t believe her ears. ” Hold the phone, did you….are you trying to hook Lucy up with a boy? Why would you do that?!”

” She’d change once she gets a boy—”

” You’re crazy!” Collette yelled at her, jerking her shirt. ” What in the world is wrong with you? What makes you think dating a boy would make her change? Are you mad?!”

Charlotte pushed her away. ” I’m not mad! I’m telling you facts.”

Collette was breathing heavily. ” You’re the most craziest person I’ve ever met in my entire life. Throwing off your little sister to some random dude. Do you have an atom of conscience in you?!”

Charlotte snarled at her. ” Yes I do. And for your information, Damian isn’t some random dude. We’re neighbors. Lucy told me she prayed for a sign and that sign turned out to be Damian.”

” So because she bumped into a stranger, you gave her off to him. Is Lucy a bride to be given out to? You seemed not to understand the first law of life which is “TRUST NO ONE”.”

” You don’t trust Damian, but I do. He won’t hurt a fly.”

” That’s where you’re bloody wrong, Chole!” Collette shouted. ” For crying out loud, are you this stupid? Lucy is too young to get involved with a boy. You seemed not to have considered the negative alternatives of dating in this part of the world. Lucy dosing know squat about boys.

Damian is a man and not a woman. He is prone to be aroused and knowing how naive and stupid Lucy is, there’s no telling how their relationship would lead to s£x and you very well know what happens if she eventually gets pregnant. Damian may either deny the pregnancy or pressure her to abort it. What happens when Lucy gets rid of the pregnancy? Death or destruction of her womb. The risk is high. Do you really wish for our little sister to have that kind of ending?”

Charlotte swallowed. She hadn’t thought about that angle. All she was ever concerned about was getting Lucy and Damian together.

” You’re just saying all that because you don’t want her to get a boyfriend,” Charlotte snapped. ” You’re jealous: all lesbians are. I know what I’m doing. Once Lucy dates a boy, she’d change. I’m certain of that. And for the part of Damian getting her pregnant, I’m not going to allow that happen. I have my eyes on them.”

” For how long will you have your eyes on them, huh?” Collette raised her hands in the air. ” For how long do you have to keep an eye on Damian when he begins to give Lucy light kisses, then deeper kisses until he finally shifts her pants?”

Charlotte knew she was losing the fight but she wasn’t going to lose that easy. ” You sound as if you can do better. How else do you expect Lucy to Change?”

” No one can change her except herself,” Collette said. ” Not even Damian can change her. I can’t change her either. But I can talk to her. It’s her decision and her choice. No one should stigmatize her. Lucy’s like a HIV patient. What a HIV patient needs is care, attention and love. It’s insensitive to ask a HIV patient how he got the virus. That’s stigmatism. It’s totally wrong. Lucy’s in that order. She didn’t chose to be into girls. It’s all my fault but that’s not what matters now. Instead of hitting her like some stray dog, you should’ve been a little bit more patient and loving. Damian will only destroy her. I don’t care who he is. I don’t trust him, period. I don’t trust anyone. I don’t trust men, I don’t trust you….I don’t even trust myself. We’re all sinners. No one’s perfect.”

Charlotte couldn’t bear it anymore. ” So Lucy should go on being gay, is that what it is?”

” It’s her decision,” Collette snapped. ” Hitting her won’t change her. Hooking her with a boy would only worsen matters. I’m trying to change as well. You think it’s that easy? What about you? I learnt you club every night, going against traffic rules and getting drunk with your boyfriend. If having a boyfriend would change Lucy, would you imagine letting her live the same lifestyle as yours?”

Charlotte retorted back. ” Never. My intention is to Change her, not turn her into me.”

” That’s correct,” Collette admitted. ” I know you mean well for our little sister but you have to respect her decision. Your dad didn’t hit you when you get drunk, does he? Does he hit you when you beat against traffic rules and regulations? Does he hit you when you hang out with your boyfriend? You chose your way of life and nobody is throwing a tantrum. Why can’t Lucy be allowed to make decisions for herself? Hitting her is way out of line. You have no right in the world to touch her. No right at all!”

Charlotte snarled. She knew she’d lost the fight. Collette had said Soo much she was now short of words to fire back at her.

Suddenly, Lucy stood up from the floor and dashed out of the house. She had been listening to her two sisters argument and seeing them this way made her bitter. She felt hurt, knowing it was all her fault these two were after each other’s neck. She could’nt take it anymore.

Outside the house, a heavy storm was coming. Thunder rumbled under the dark clouds.

Collette watched Lucy running away from the house. She could hear her crying and her heart sank heavily.

” This is all your fault,” Charlotte said behind her. ” If you hadn’t showed up, none of this nonesense would’ve happened.”

Collette turned around and pushed her in the chest. ” You selfish, good for nothing b!tch! You’re the worse sister ever!”

Charlotte had no idea what came upon her. She got enraged and swung Collette a resounding slap to the cheeks that travelled out of the walls of the house.

Collette stood still, her face turned, her hand to her cheeks, her eyes sad and heavy.

Charlotte took a step back and sudden fear gripped her. She had slapped Collette! How…why did she do that?!

Collette slowly turned her face to meet Charlotte’s frightened eyes.

Charlotte gulped.

Collette was all ice, hard and deadpan. She stared at Charlotte for sometime, her breath coming in slowly and gently.

Then she walked passed Charlotte and walked up the stairs to Lucy’s room

Charlotte remained where she stood, waiting for the worse to happen. Her face was soaked with sweat and her heart pounded against her ribs.

Colette finally returned with her suitcase. Without saying a word to Charlotte, she rolled her suitcase passed Charlotte and headed for the door.

The moment she crossed the door, she slammed it shut, leaving Charlotte alone in the lonely dark house.

Outside, a flash of lightening appeared in the sky, casting a shadowy outline in the house.

Charlotte felt a tear drop from her eyes to the floor.

” What have I done?” She whispered under her breath.

Damian checked his watch, it was way past the time for his date with Lucy. Why was she taking Soo long?

Women!

He chuckled, brushing a flick of dust off his shirt. Women are always late. Maybe she’s putting on some make-up or something.

He was certain to hide the flowers he’d bought for Lucy behind his back. He didn’t know why but he felt shy with what he was about asking her during their lunch date.

He pictured himself standing before Lucy with the flowers.

No, no, no. He smiled. Take it easy, dude. She might freak out.

Suddenly, he felt raindrops on his skin. Glancing up, he studied the dark clouds, heavy with rain, rushing in and spreading across the sky.

Damnit, he swore. And just when he was about having a nice time out with Lucy. Why was he always Soo unlucky?

From the corner of his eyes, he could hear noises as if two people were arguing.

Damian leaned over. Although he stood across Lucy’s house, he could hear the heated argument going on there.

What’s going on in there? He asked himself.

He stopped when he saw Lucy dashing out of the house. She was crying and heading for the estate’s gate that would lead her into the streets.

Damian stared after her, wondering what went wrong. Just as he was about running after her, he felt something like a slap sounding on someone’s cheeks.

He stiffened and glanced back at Lucy’s house. The door was wide opened. He could see the twins; Collette and Charlotte. The girl with the long silky hair was staring at Charlotte, her hands to her face.

Damian swallowed. Had Charlotte slapped her? Why would she do something like that?

Then Collette walked brushed past Charlotte and headed towards the stairs. That was the last thing he saw.

Lucy.

He quickly turned around, realising himself but it was already late.

Lucy had disappeared. He was too distracted by the twins he had forgotten about her.

Damain turned back to the house.

Collette was leaving, dragging a suitcase with her. She slammed the door shut.

Damian stared at her. She saw him staring and caught his eyes.

His heart went cold. Just staring into her hard remote face brought out sweats in him.

Why are Lucy’s sisters this scary?

Collette walked up to him and for a moment, he thought he was going to get slapped. He prepared himself for the worse.

But Collette didn’t slap him. She stood there before him and asked, “Where is Lucy?”

Damian pointed at the estate’s gate. ” She went that way. I can’t say what direction she took.”

Collette glared at him for sometime and he could outline a hand printed on her cheeks.

Charlotte really gave her one hell of a slap. He could feel it in his bones.

” When Lucy gets back, tell her I said goodbye.” Collette said and began walking away from him.

As Damian watched her, the rain started dropping in lightly, until it became heavy.

But Collette didn’t stop moving. She walked in the rain, her nose in the air, her eyes closed, her anger washing away in the rain.

A flash of lightning appeared in the sky.

Waving a public bus down, I waited for it to pull up.

The bus pulled up and the door swung opened.

There were no passengers in the bus. Just two fellas and a driver.

” Where are you headed, lady?” The driver asked.

It was raining crazily and no one was around. I had no intention of going back home. I couldn’t stand the sight of seeing my two sisters quarrel over me. I needed to go somewhere to clear my head. The beach sounded like an idea.

I’ll have to take the subway train but it was a long way off from here.

” The subway,” I said, quietly.

” Get in,” the driver jerked his head into the bus.

But I didn’t get in. I was uncomfortable with these men. They all wore dark glasses and there was that disturbing thoughts of these guys being hoodlums or worse.

” Never mind,” I said, stepping back. ” I’ll take the next bus.”

If I thought they’d zoom off, I was wrong.

Before I could say JACK ROBINSON, the two men jumped from the bus and landed before me.

I felt powerful arms grabbing me and in the twinkle of an eye, I was jerked into the bus, a dirty handkerchief to my mouth.

I struggled and kicked but the men held me strong. The bus blared to life and zoomed off into the highway, splashing water in the air.

” Move! Move! Move!” The two men urged the driver. ” Hurry up!”

” Oh shut up!” The driver yelled, slamming hard on the accelerator.

I kept struggling with everything I got until I became weak. I stopped struggling as my eyes became heavy and spinning inside my head.

My eyes gradually closed shut and I was immediately plugged into darkness.
