APPY HOME by 2pac.

The stereo was playing #Happy_home. It made the mood in the car smooth, cool and easy but it wasn’t so for the people inside the car.

Charlotte was at the wheels, Damian sat beside her on the passenger seat while Collette and I sat behind at the back seat.

We were heading to Temi’s house to get Collette things.

Actually, Collette had arrived in Lagos last night and had spent the night at Temi’s house. Now she was going to spend three days at our house.

Charlotte surprised me. Earlier, she had walked to her car where Collette was waiting.

Collette was leaning against the rear door, her face pointed at the direction the rented limosine raced to. She didn’t seemed to have noticed her big sister. It was as if her mind, soul and body was centred on something else.

Charlotte got into the car and waited for Damian and I. It wasn’t until Damian opened the front door did she opened the rear door and got in.

The car slowly moved out of the parking lot and made for the highway.

At first I waited for the car to pick up speed as usual but it didn’t. Charlotte was nervous. I’ve never seen her this way before. She was cautious with her driving.

To my surprise and that of Damian, Charlotte didn’t drive crazily. She was Soo slow the car nearly caused a traffic. Many drivers raced passed us, frowning at Charlotte.

But Charlotte didn’t slam on the accelerator. Somehow, I wished she’d get into her crazy driving.

Was it possible she was behaving herself because Collette was in the car?

From the corner of my eyes, I stared at Collette.

She was staring out of the window, her donut sunglasses masking her eyes. She looked like a dead person: no expression, no reaction.

Just cold, hard and deadpan.

Damian was watching Collette from the rear mirror. His eyes showed his confusion and uneasiness. Between him and Charlotte, I couldn’t tell who was more afraid of Collette.

Finally we arrived at Temi’s house. Collette had given Charlotte the direction earlier before she even started the car back at the cathedral.

Temi’s house was a brick bungalow. I saw her playing a board game of chess on the veranda of the bungalow as Charlotte pulled up outside the house.

I barely recognized Temi without her school uniform. She was in bum shorts and a yellow top having a bold logo that read: STAR GIRL!

Without saying anything to any of us, Collette got out of the car and headed to Temi.

They hugged and began talking. I saw Temi’s eyes moved from Collette to the car.

She saw Charlotte and her eyes widened. I heard her shout.

” Jeepers, Chi-Chi. You never told me you were a twin!”

Collette wrinkled her nose and dragged her into the house where they talked seriously for the next ten minutes.

I had no idea what they were talking about but I’ll bet Collette was giving her some brief explanation of what was going on.

” So Collette came,” I said, not expecting an answer from anyone. ” Shocking.”

As expected, no one replied me. I saw Charlotte staring at her hands as if she was contemplating something.

Suddenly, Collette stepped out of the house, Rolling her suitcase towards the car.

Charlotte didn’t even wait for her to arrive. She pressed something under her seat and the boot opened.

Collette dumped the suitcase in the boot and stepped away. Temi stood on the veranda. She waved at Collette and Collette waved back indifferently.

The ride back home was even more slower than before. By the time we arrived, it was five minutes after five.

” I’ll be seeing you soon, lil Lucy,” Damian said stepping out of the car. He searched my face for any reaction as I walked towards him.

” Why don’t you come over for dinner?” I offered.

His eyes wandered off to where Collette was taking her suitcase off the booth.

” Maybe next time,” Damian said. ” Your sisters are…you never told me Charlotte was a twin.”

I sighed. ” I thought I told you.’

He screwed his face. ” You did? I don’t remember.”

I didn’t remember either but that wasn’t the point. The point is, Collette was in Lagos and I’m in a freaking crossroad of confusion right now.

” You’re afraid of her, aren’t you?” I asked instead, feeling my heart slamming hard again my ribs as I absentmindedly had my eyes on Collette.

He laughed uneasily. ” Afraid? Of who?”

I eyed him. ” Collette.”

He licked his dried lips. ” I don’t really know. She look hostile.”

We both watched as Charlotte led Collette to the front door.

” She’s not a bad person, Damian,” I said. ” She’s just being herself.”

” Lucy,” Charlotte’s voice came over to me. ” I need you inside the house right now.”

” Well, I’ll be seeing you soon, Damian,” I said to him and hurriedly ran into the house.

Yeah I’ll be seeing him soon. Not now. Right now, there’s fire on the mountain.

Collette was waiting in the middle of the room. She stood with her suitcase, looking at the direction of the stairs.

Charlotte stood afar off in the shadows. I still don’t understand why she was afraid of Collette.

” I’m here,” I said, waiting for Charlotte’s next instructions.

Charlotte’s voice was a little shaky but she managed to keep it steady. ” She’ll be sharing your room, Lucy. Do show her the way.”

And Charlotte left into the kitchen.

I gaped after her then at Collette. I couldn’t believe it. I was going to share my room with Collette for the next three days.

We were roommates at school. Now we’re roommates again at home. How in the world do these chains of events come to pass anyway?

Shaking off the disturbing thought of sharing my bed with Collette, I walked to her, took her suitcase and headed for the stairs.

” If you’d come with me.”

Holy Christ! I was speaking to her as if we were strangers. It ain’t my fault though. Collette was too hard and indifferent to everything. Sometimes she makes you feel as if you were an alien. I perfectly understood why Damian was uneasy about her.

Collette followed me until we were inside my room. She wasn’t the type to be impressed by the luxury of my new home and I was just about right. Nothing seemed to shake her, not even the wealth of her ex dad.

” Well, welcome to my humble room,” I said, backing off to let her move freely inside the room.

Collette removed her sunglasses and surveyed the room. Her eyelids were lowered but this time, they weren’t hard or cold. Instead She looked tired and exhausted.

” It’s nice,” she said softly.

I swallowed.

Her voice.

That voice. It always have a way of caressing my inner soul.

” You look tired,” I said quietly. ” Maybe you should use the bathroom and freshen up, I’ll get you something to eat.”

I sounded like the most boring person ever. Collette turned around and met my eyes.

I looked at that piercing dark eyes and my heart raced. It was as though, I was being caught in the Medusa’s gaze, turning me into a petrifying stone.

I couldn’t move, I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t blink an eyelid. I was a stone, unable to feel myself except gaze into those dark eyes.

Then Collette spoke. ” It’s nice.”

Nice huh?

” What’s nice?” My voice croaked.

” Your room, it’s nice,” she repeated.

The moment she broke contact with my eyes, I came back to my normal senses.

She walked towards my wardrobe. ” I won’t be staying longer, Lucy,” she said sharply. ” I’ll be leaving after three days. You wouldn’t mind us sharing the same wardrobe, do you?”

I didn’t know when I carried her suitcase over to her. ” Oh no, not at all. You can even wear my clothes if you like.”

Collette took the suitcase from my hand and our skin brushed against each other.

You know that butterfly feeling you get in your guts when you got your first kiss? That’s exactly what I was feeling at that moment.

Just the brush of our skin and I’m feeling soo high. How on Earth could I have forgotten about Collette all these while. Our attachment to each other never gets old.

Collette became busy unpacking her clothes. I stood behind her, watching her.

She came to Lagos with a small board of chess game, two pairs of shoes, a few clothes and her brown paper back novel.

That novel. She never can’t seemed to lay it off her sight for a minute.

” It really is good to see you again, Collette,” I said suddenly. ” I missed you.”

She didn’t react. She continued with what she was doing.

” It’s crazy how I’ve been these past few weeks. Imagine my shock when I realized you were a twin” I began talking irespective of the fact she wasn’t going to reply me. ” Why didn’t you tell me my new dad was your dad?”

She spoke under her breath. ” Lucy, don’t you think it’s about time you learn how to be quiet?”

” But I have questions.”

” And I have no answers,” she stood up to her full height and faced me. ” I also have questions for your new dad.”

” What questions?”

She lifted her shoulder. ” I guess you’ll have to figure that out for yourself soon enough. For now I just want to get a shower and take a long rest.”

I was worried about her. She was weight down with some sort of burden. I knew somewhere deep inside her, she was fighting a demon. That demon was what I was going to find out.

” Tell me the truth.” my hands were clammy and slick. ” Did you come because of me?”

Silence. We stood still, staring at each other without blinking an eye.

Then Collette walked over to me. Before I knew it, she pushed me to the bed. I landed roughly on the bed and gaped up at her.

” What are you doing?”

Collette came down on me. She placed both her hands over my head and stared down at me.

We held each other’s eyes for a long time. My heart was heaving up and down. To my dismay, sweat beads formed on my forehead and my lips were quavering.

Collette held my chin with a finger and raised it up to meet her face. I shut my eyes tightly and waited for the worse.

I can’t breathe!

I can’t breathe!

Collette’s hot breath reached my cheeks but she didn’t kiss me. I waited but still no kiss.

What’s happening? I slightly opened my eyes to see Collette glaring down at me.

” I wished I came because of you,” she said, softly. ” I wished I missed you as much as you missed me,” she paused, moving away from my body. ” But now we’re sisters so I have to stop wishing.

I raised my head, feeling breathless and lightheaded. ” What do you mean?”

She was taking off her clothes, heading for the bathroom. ” It means you and I can’t happen anymore. Sisters are not meant to have anything intimate to do with each other. Whatever we might’ve had together back at school, ends in school. We’re sisters, we’re going to live like one.”

My mouth was dry. ” So you didn’t come for me?”

” I came because I made a promise to your mom to attend her wedding,” she removed her white brasserie and took a towel to wrap herself in. ” I also came because of that novel.”

I glanced over at the brown paper novel in my wardrobe.

” The author is receiving an award tomorrow at the states theatre for arts and culture. I’m going over to witness the occasion tomorrow,” Collette continued. ” I wouldn’t be here if your new dad hadn’t persuaded me to stay, Lucy. I have lot’s of questions for him as well. Once I have my answers, I’m leaving.”

But I wasn’t interested in what she just said. My mind dwelled on what she mentioned earlier.

••••you and I can’t happen anymore. Sisters are not meant to have anything intimate to do with each other. Whatever we might’ve had together back at school, ends in school. We’re sisters, we’re going to live like one••••

” Chi-Chi…I—”

” Don’t say anything,” she removed her underwear and put on some bathing slippers. ” I know what you’re going to say but save it. Yes I still have feelings for you but we can’t continue like this. I’m sorry, Lucy. Circumstances have changed. I’d want us to make a fresh start. Once we’re back at school, could we pretend to forget about everything we’ve ever had to do with each other? For the sake of our new founded family.”

” As sisters?”

She nodded. ” That’s correct. As sisters.”

” What about the memories?” I was biting my lips, cause I felt like crying. ” You think it’s going to be easy to let go off the memories?”

Collette came over to me, her white towel covering her nakedness. She squatted before me and held my cheeks with her cold fingers.

” Lucy, it’s not going to be easy for me to let go off the memories,” she leaned forward and kissed my forehead. ” No matter what happens, I’ll always love you. This is incest. I can’t kiss my own sister. I’ve done many crazy stuffs. Things that I regret ever doing. But the last thing I’m ever going to commit is incest. Now we’re sisters, let’s keep it that way.”

And she stood up and left me for the bathroom.

The next sound I heard from the bathroom were water splashing on a naked body.

I bite my lips harder. Incest huh? So this means we’re never going to….

I heard a faint tick toe outside my door. Spinning around, I stare after the door. I was quick enough to see a shadowy figure heading away towards the stairs.

And that’s when it hit me.

Charlotte has been listening to our conversation all along.
