” This is an important announcement,” Collette said out loud so everyone could hear.

The chess club became silent and all members paid close attention to what she was about to say.

Collette held a long sheet of formal paper. There was a frown on her face when she began talking.

” The African Grand High School Chess Tournament will begin February 16th next year being 2017. All members of the chess club are advised to buckle up and practice harder for the big challenge. There’d be a school tournament to pick out the best players from the club to represent the school and the country at large for the tournament. Thereafter, the best players would be given a form to be filled with four passports attached to it inorder to register for the African Grand High School Chess Tournament. If there are any challenges the chess club members may be facing in regards to the tournament, be sure to consult me, the chess coordinator for help.”

She placed the paper to the table and regarded the girls infront of her.

” Alright, enough of all that long sermon. Let’s focus on why we’re here,” she paused for effect. ” You girls know exactly what to do, don’t you? This isn’t the first time we’re going for the African Grand High School Chess Tournament. We went last year and we lost but I believe we’d do better next year. Do your best, people. I’m not going to ask more out of you. Just give me your best. I’ll be organising the club tournament before the end of November to pick the best players. Remember you’re not doing this for me, you’re doing this for the school, your country and yourself. Winner of the African Grand High School Chess Tournament takes home the gold cup and is also awarded a scholarship to study in any university of her choice in the world. So you see, it really is a big deal. I want everyone to be part of this stuff so I urged everyone to do her best. I’m I clear?”

Members of the chess club answered in one unison. ” Yes, president.”

Collette nodded. ” Alright people, let’s get back to work. Choose a partner and take a table each. We’re gonna play five different games. It’s going to be a little tournament. Winner plays with me.”

The gym house became lively with excitement as each girl chosed a partner and settled down on a table already set with a timer and chess pieces.

In no time, the game started. Collette moved around with her hands behind her back, inspecting each person’s games, taking notes and explaining blunders.

But her mind wasn’t really in the game.

She was thinking about Lucy. Lucy wasn’t at the club. She had made sure she returned back to the clinic and get some rest before dinner.

” You are doing remarkably well, Collette,” Vee said, going through her test score sheet. ” Breaking the school cut off mark record was outstanding. With the way you’re going, the sky is your limit.”

Collette was silent, her head bent low.

Vee noticed the sad face and she cocked her head to one side. ” Is something the matter?”

Collette shooked her head. ” No MÔM. Why do you ask?”

Vee studied her for a while. ” You look down that’s all.”

Thunder rumbled under the dark clouds outside the office. Vee stood up from behind her desk and stared out of the window.

” It’s going to rain very soon, Collette,” Vee said. ” You’d better returned back to the hostel.”

But Collette wouldn’t move from where she sat. Her head was still bent and her eyes showed her emotions.

Vee gazed at her from the window stile. ” Collette, you did hear me, right?”

” Did I do the right thing, MÔM?” Collette asked. ” Joining the LILIES.”

Vee returned to the desk and leaned against it towards Collette.

” What do you mean?” Vee asked.

” I feel different from the girl I used to be,” Collette swallowed, reflecting on the past. ” Sometimes I think I made a grave mistake becoming what I am today.”

Vee slowly passed a tongue over her red lips, staring down at Collette. She said nothing.

” I’m pushing people away,” Collette continued. ” Even my best friend Efua… I’m avoiding her. I’m scared people might get to know what I have become; my secrets, my weaknesses and my sins.”

Vera moved to her and held her cheeks. Collette looked up and met her eyes.

” Collette,” Vee said softly, caressing her cheeks. ” You made no mistake joining the LILIES. Remember what brought you here in the first place.”

Collette nodded. ” Yes, I failed my first year exam and my poor grades were not encouraging. That’s why I joined the LILIES.”

Vee smiled. ” And do you have any regrets over your grades from the day you became one of us?”

Collette shooked her head. ” I don’t think so. But—”

” Hushhhh,” Vee whispered, breaking her lips on hers. ” You have no regrets that’s all that matters.”

For a long while, the two females held each other’s lips.

Then Vee drew her lips away. ” How do you like that?”

Collette touched her lips and tasted it. ” My first kiss, MÔM.”

Vee red lips curved. ” You better start heading back to the hostel, Collette.”

Collette held her arm. ” Umm…MÔM?”

Vee regarded her closely. ” What is it?”

” I want you to….” Collette paused, her eyes shaking as she stared into Vee’s eyes. ” You had my first kiss. I want you to take my virginity as well.”

Vee wasn’t spooked. ” And why would you want me to take it? I’m not a man. ”

Collette swallowed. ” Well, you see… it’s because I…” She paused again.

Vee waited.

Collette then said it. ” It’s because I love you and I…I want you to be my first. I wouldn’t want a man to take my virginity I want it to be you.”

Vee leaned forward and wrapped her hand around Collette’s waist.

Outside lightening flashes blew around the crowds as the rain began hard and heavy against the windows.

Raising Collette up to her feet, Vee laid her down on the large desk and slowly began unbuttoning her uniform.

” You sure you want this?” She asked in a low soft voice.

Collette nodded, her heart banging hard against her ribs as her teacher exposed her white brassier and ran her hands from the middle of her chest to her tummy.

” It’s you I want, MÔM.”

” Ok you don’t have to worry about that,” Vee gently removed her wrist watch. ” As for virgins, I’m pretty used to breaking them.”

Collette was surprised. ” U-used to breaking them? You mean you’ve done this before….with other girls?”

” Sure,” Vee stood upright, pulling her polo shirt over her head. ” Virgins are my favorite food.”

Collette swallowed. She can’t believe she was offering herself to her guardian and a woman for that matter. But it’s what she wanted. Wasn’t it?

” Luckily for you, it’s raining,” Vee unhooked her own bra and dropped it to the floor. ” We have the office to ourself. No one is going to disturb us under this rain.”

Vee climbed the table and gazed down at her. ” You sure this is what you want?”

Frowning from the memory, Collette ran her palm over her face and stepped out of the gym house. She really could do with some fresh air.

Just thinking about that day brought out sweats from her. The day she lost her virginity to Vee that raining day in Vee’s office.

It was the most painful experience she’d ever had. There’s no way she was going to let Lucy get that same treatment.

Not from her nor anyone else.

Lucy was special. If there was someone who’s going to break her hymen, it’s going to be a man…not a woman.

Collette felt a stabbing pain in her heart. She clenched her chest as realization hit her.

” But if Lucy got disvirgined by a man instead of me, wouldn’t it hurt me?” She asked herself aloud.

” What are you thinking about?” Abdul asked, typing furiously on his laptop.

Vee snapped out of her thoughts. She placed her pen down. ” Nothing.”

Abdul grinned. ” Let me guess, you’re like that cause I’d be leaving tomorrow, right?

Vee laughed a little. ” You wish but that’s not why I’m like this.”

Abdul stood up to his feet and wandered over to where Vee sat. His hand went around her neck from behind and he lightly kissed her on the cheeks.

” You’re bothered about something, Vee. I’ve been watching you for the past one hour. You kept staring at a spot, drumming your pen on your table. something’s wrong. What is it?”

Vee shrugged. ” It’s Collette.”

Abdul immediately drew away from her. ” I don’t like that girl. She’s too rude. I thought we had an agreement not to mention her name while I’m around.”

” Well, you asked what’s my problem and I said it so what’s wrong with that?”

Abdul groaned. ” Alright, alright, what’s up with her? She giving you any trouble?”

” I’m just worried about her,” Vee spoke, rubbing her temples. ” Collette and I are very close. I treat her like a big sister would and she relies on me for nearly everything. But recently, I noticed some slight changes in her. She’s gradually disassociating herself away from me.”

Abdul felt Happy. ” Isn’t that a good thing?”

Vee glared at him. ” No it’s not.”

Abdul raised his hands in the air. ” Hey stop looking at me that way. I never knew you two were that close. I just felt it’s kinda good she’s being independent.”

” Independent?”

Abdul scratched the back of his head, trying to figure out the right answer. ” Don’t you think it sounds okay for Collette to create decisions for herself? She can’t be tied to you forever. Look I don’t know how attached you two are to each other but the fact remains that she’s going to leave you. Your place is here in this Academy with me. Collette’s place is elsewhere outside this school walls. You can’t control her once she’s graduate out of this place. That’s the sad truth and you’re stuck with that no matter what you do.”

Vee listened without interrupting.

She felt those words. Abdul sounded just about right with those words.

Abdul stretched his arms over his head tirelessly. He yawned loudly. ” I don’t just like that girl. I feel sad for the unlucky chap that’d marry her.”

Vee froze. Did he just say Marry?

She imagined Collette in a white gown saying “I do” to a dazzling handsome man.

Vee’s hand suddenly turned to fists. ” Not going to happen!” She said sharply, rising to her feet.

Abdul was startled. ” Umm… You okay?”

Vee face was a mask of anger and jealousy. ” I can’t imagine her with a man, never!”

Abdul screwed his eyes in confusion. The woman standing before him wasn’t the woman he’d spent the week with.

She’s changed. It was as if she was someone else.
