Collette had ordered me to go to the chess club without her. She mentioned she needed to speak to Vee for some minutes.

Taking the popular path that led through the school clinic, I headed first to the tuck shop to buy some snacks.

My mom and I had a serious daughter to mother conversation. She kept scolding me over the phone but with time, her voice went low and relaxed.

She wasn’t happy about my failed test and I understood that pain. All the same, she encouraged me to try my best in my exams.

I told her everything would be fine and that I already have a tutor. I didn’t tell her much about Collette. I didn’t tell her about Efua either. As a matter of fact, those two girl’s were not part of our conversation.

At the end of it all, I made my mom promised to visit really soon. She promised she’d be available when it was general visiting day.

” Oh and I have a big surprise for you,” my mom had said over the phone.

” What surprise?”

” It’s a surprise,” she said excitedly. ” When I visit I’ll let you in on it. For now focus on your books. I’ll be seeing you soon. Love you.”

And she hung up.

Paying for the meat pie and pancakes I bought from the tuck shop, I made for the chess club.

On my way to the club, I met with some seniors.

They were about four in number and were heading my way. Now I’ve gotten used to greetings my seniors and so I greeted them and walked passed them.

They all turned around to stare at me as if I were a criminal but I kept moving.

Suddenly a harsh tough voice pierced the air. ” You there, new girl!”

It’s surprising how many days I’ve spent in this school and I’m still addressed as the new girl.

I slowly turned around and to my surprise, they were all advancing towards me.

” Yes, seniors?” I asked as they rounded in on me.

One look at them and I instantly knew they were SS.2 seniors. It’s quite easy to tell cause the SS.3 senior’s never wore sport skirts–only leggings.

The juniors wore sport skirts so that’s what differentiate us from each other.

” You must be Lucy, right?” One of the girls spoke.

I nodded, s------g my eyes at her. She looked very familiar. I just couldn’t place where I must’ve seen her before.

” That’s my name,” I answered.

Another of the girls held my shirt and dragged me to face her. ” So you’re the little rat that’s held Chi-Chi’s attention away from our Adaobi, huh?”

Adaobi? I remembered that name. Then I glanced at the girl who’d asked me my name.

She was Adaobi. I recognized her instantly.

I tried laughing it off. ” Umm…I don’t get what you’re saying, seniors.”

From afar, I saw Sharon. She watched the scene and sensing trouble she ran off. I have no idea where she was running to.

Adaobi stepped forward and glared hard at me. I gulped Because that look was murdering enough.

” Lucy Williams?”

” Yes, senior?” I answered, afraid of her.

” There’s something I’d like to ask you. I have noticed something about you lately. You’re always with Chi-Chi. So are you two going steady then? Are you going out with her?”

I didn’t answer her. I was mute.

Her voice went higher. ” I’m right, I’m I? Answer me.”

” No we’re not going out,” I replied.

But the girls wouldn’t believe me.

” That’s what Collette told me,” Adaobi said. ” But I’m not Soo sure I believe her. I think it’s time you gave me an explanation yourself.”

I looked away, trying to be calm but in actual fact, I was losing my breath. ” Senior, you don’t have to worry about that. My relationship with her is not what you think it is. I mean we’re both girls. What’d make you think I’ll date my own gender. That’s gross.”

Adaobi jerked my shirt and pulled me towards her to face her. Her eyes were angry with rage and jealousy.

” Don’t think I’m dumb or stupid Lucy. I know what’s going on here, okay. I’ve been watching you two. You stay behind after meals to eat with her, you share snacks, you go to the library alone and of recent you’re following her everywhere. She’s spending a lot of her free time with someone like you and yet you’re expecting me to think everything’s normal.”

” It is normal, senior,” I said breathlessly. ” We’re roommates.”

” Which makes it all the more reason,” Adaobi pushed me away roughly. ” Chi-Chi is always pushing people away. She’s never been this close to anyone since I’ve schooled here. You’re nothing special. You’re rude, you’re lazy and you’re dumb. Imagine failing the school’s C.A test and yet she chose to hang around with a loser like you. Why is that?!”

I gritted my teeth. She just made me angry.

” Why don’t you stop being a bit pushy, senior,” I said. The rage in my voice even surprised me. ” We both know how CHI-CHI is. Apparently she doesn’t like people who are too desperate. If you really like her, think more about her. Give her sometime and try understanding that she doesn’t like you in return. You can’t force someone to love you so why stress yourself out.”

I knew I said a little too much but this girl was Soo annoying and unnerving. I had to put her in her place.

The girls surrounding me were surprised as it I’d just done the most daring thing ever.

Adaobi was Soo mad with rage I’ll bet she’d throw punches at me if given a chance.

” Tell me,” she said through clenched teeth. ” Do you have a school godmother?”

I once had a school godmother, that was Efua but I declined. I wondered why she asked that.

” No I don’t,” I aswered.

She smiled evilly. ” Good!”

I didn’t see the slap coming. She strucked me very hard in the face that I tore out of her grip and crashed to the dusty ground.

The snacks I bought rolled off on the ground.

” That’s for wagging your mouth, you s--t!” Adaobi yelled at me and gripping my hair, she jerked it up savagely.

I screamed in pains as she began tugging at my hair. I grabbed her wrists to stop her but she hit me again in the face.

Her other girl friends joined her. They descended on me, hitting me from all sides with their fists and legs.

I cried out for help but no one came to my rescue.

” The next time you talk to me,” Adaobi panted, kicking me in the stomach with her knee. ” Mind how you move your dirty mouth.”

Suddenly from nowhere, we heard a loud voice that echoed round the entire place.

” That’s enough!”

The moment everyone turned around and saw who it was, they tore away from me as if I’d suddenly grown red hot.

I fell to the ground, dust and sand in my mouth. I felt something warm streaming down my upper eye.

It was blood. They’d opened a cut on my skin.

Raising my head up, I stared at the girl marching towards us.

It was as if……..time slowed.

She had on a white cotton top and a matching white leggings. In one of her hand was a long whip and her other hand was balled up in fists.

Her eyes were red with rage like that of an angry black bull and her breath came in sharp snorts.

One look at her and I knew who it was.

It was Collette.

Trailing her from behind was Sharon. Sharon had probably gone for help when she saw me in trouble.

The SS.2 girls were frightened of Collette as she approached them. Adaobi took a step back and so did the others.

The moment Collette was nearer, she raised her hand in the air and whoosed it down on the girls without mercy.

I heard loud shouts and cries ripping the air.

Collette was moving fast without stopping. She strucked a girl on the back, strucked another and another and another and another.

Sharon ran up to me and held my shoulders. ” Lucy, dear. You alright?”

I swallowed. ” I think so. What’s going on?”

Sharon supported me to my feet. ” Don’t worry about it. You’re safe.”

We both turned towards Collette and the girls.

The girls fell on their knees, pleading for mercy but Collette was without mercy.

She whipped them all savagely with a energy that I’ve never seen from her before.

I was surprised the girls didn’t make a dash for it. I mean they had a choice to run for their lives but they didn’t. I later learnt from Sharon that running away from the Council president when serving punishment was a big crime on its own. The Council president was like the second in command to the school’s board. The council president has the power to write an expulsion later and have the principal sign on it with little or no convincing. Anything the council president says or do is alright with the principal. No one dares questions her authority.

At long last, Collette stopped whipping the girls. She held her knees and began breathing really hard.

I wanted to run to her for fear she was having her asthma attack but I stopped when she brought out an inhaler and s----d in the medicine.

The girls remained on the ground, writhing their bodies with their hands like wounded snakes.

Collette dropped the inhaler coolval stories back in her pocket and rose to her full length. When she did, she looked taller and larger.

Turning to me, she beckoned me to come. Limping with half the energy left in me, I went to her.

She held me by the shoulder and inspected me closely.

I watched her as her eyes ran over me from my head to my toes. I could feel her rage, hot and dangerous. The blood at the upper part of my eye angered her.

She turned sharply to the girls before her and yelled at them. ” Who’s idea was this? Huh?!”

No one answered. They remained on their knees staring at each other hesitantly.

” I asked a question!” She barked like a sea captain.

Instantly they all pointed at Adaobi.

Collette stared fixedly at Adaobi. She was sniffing, bowing her head with her hands fidgeting uneasily.

” I’m Soo sorry, president,” she whimpered like a little dog. ” I don’t know what came over me.”

For a while, there was silence. No one said a word.

Then Collette squatted before her and squeeze her Cheeks Soo tightly her lips pushed out like a fish.

” Adaobi?!” Collette called.

” Yes, senior?” she mumbled.

” You’re the worse person I’ve ever met in my entire life,” Collette began with a loud note. ” I know why you did this. I would’ve taken this assault to Mrs Cooker and file a expulsion letter in no time against you and your friends but I changed my mind cause it’s not worth it. I’m going to give you and your three friends a second chance. This is going to be the first and the last time you lay your hands on my Lucy. She’s mine. She belongs to me and no one should hurt her, get that?”

The girls answers in one voice. ” Yes, president.”

Collette let go off Adaobi and stood up. ” Now apologise to her.”

They all turned to me and apologized. ” We’re sorry.”

I didn’t say anything. Honestly, I have nothing to say.

Collette came over and stood in front of me. ” Can you walk?”

I sniffed, staring at my legs. ” I think so.”

Collette waved Sharon over and together, they supported me to the clinic where I received immediate treatment.

Collette and Sharon stayed by my side until I done with. No one said a word to each other till I was taken back to the hostel.

” You can leave now,” Collette said to Sharon as we stepped out of the elevator. ” I’ll take it from here.”

” Yes, president,” she said and was about leaving.

” And Sharon, one more thing,” Collette called and Sharon looked back. ” Thank you for saving Lucy.”

Sharon smiled. ” I appreciate, president. I always watch my best friend’s back.”

Collette didn’t reply her. She guided me to the front of our room and opened the door. Placing me gently on the bed, Collette locked the door and returned back to me.

Drawing a seat beside my bed, she sat down and stared at me. ” How are you feeling now, Lucy?”

I was covering my eyes with the back of my hand. The bandage over my upper eye still hurt but I was getting used to the pain.

” I’ll be fine,” was all I could say.

Collette regarded my bruises and the dirty clothes I had on. ” Doesn’t seem as if there’d be any chess club for the both of us today, would there?”

” You go ahead,” I groaned in pains. ” I’ll be fine.”

Collette held my cheeks and stroked my hair. ” Not with you in this state. I’m not leaving you.”

Inwardly I was happy. She’s not leaving me. I like that.

” Are you not going to ask why I was beaten by those girls?” I asked.

She narrowed her eyes. ” I don’t need to bother myself cause I already know.”

I swallowed. I wanted to say something but she interrupted me.

” Why didn’t you tell them you have a school godmother?” She asked suddenly.

” That’s because I don’t have a school godmother.”

” You should have a school godmother,” she said seriously. ” They wouldn’t lay a finger on you once they know who your school godmother is.”

I saw the logic in what she was saying. ” But you were the one who told me to leave …..”

I paused cause I didn’t want to mention Efua.

” You should get a school godmom soon,” she patted my head. ” Does it still hurts?”

I nodded, feeling the stabbing pains in my hair root.

” You have to be smart and careful around here, Lucy,” Collette started again. ” If Sharon hadn’t come to get me, those girls would’ve torn you to pieces.”

There was a moment silence.

” I wouldn’t want you getting hurt again,” she continued and I heard her voice going broken. ” Promise me you’d be careful next time. If anything bad happens to you again I’ll….”

She paused when she felt my hand grabbing hers. I squeezed her hand, not letting my eyes off her for a bit.

” I’ll be careful, Collette,” I smiled. ” Stop worrying about me.”

She leaned over and kissed my forehead, her hand Cupping my face. She looked into my eyes and closed her eyes. ” I’ll always worry about you cause I’m afraid to lose you.”

” That’s Soo sweet of you, Collette,” my chest was heaving as I inhaled her hot breath. ” Was that what you meant when you mentioned I belong to you?”

She gazed steadily into my eyes and I saw the passion in those still glittering eyes. ” Yes. No one is going to take me away from you.”

Then her lips crashed on mine. ” You’re mine.”

My mouth opened to let her in and she held my lips in a deep slow kiss. I slowly closed my eyes and let out a low purr when her hand snaked up my tummy to my brassier.

Collette then began taking my shirt off. As she did, I wrapped my arms around her.

” Come on the bed with me, Chi-Chi,” I said in her mouth, s-----g her underlips.

She obeyed, climbing the bed and saddling me. She pulled the shirt over my head, exposing my brassier before her very eyes.
