Marvin Met Sarah

{Sarah’s Narration }

At the shopping mall

One evening , I decided to have a stroll along the busy streets of Accra, around Airport residential area but I changed my mind and moved towards Airport City to Marina Mall.

One of the first class malls in Accra. Marina Mall is made up of three floors of shops, with the top level also hosting a food court with a welcome café and a couple of fast food outlets. I had already bought a few food stuffs, pushing them in my trolley towards the payment section of the mall. Suddenly, I bumped into a young man who suddenly materialize from the other alley of the mall. The food stuffs in my trolley scattered on the ground. The young man was quite surprised but didn’t utter a word. He bent down and picked my stuffs for me and apologized for the accident.

I was moved by the young man’s magnanimity and initiated a conversation with him. I felt like I have seen that face before but I didn’t know where. Maybe In my dream.

I even helped him get the items he needed. After paying for his items, he came out of the mall. I waited for him outside the mall and we had a dialogue.

Me: I’m called Sarah Donkor.

Unknown Guy: Call me Marvin ‘Agyeman.’

Me: Alright. Nice meeting you.

Marvin: Nice meeting you too.

Me: umm. Are you from the United States?

Marvin: Yea. USA. Why did you asked?

Me: Your English. You are slurring.

Marvin: I see.

Me: Sorry for bumping into you.

Marvin: Its okay. Can I be your friend?

Me: We are friends already.

Marvin: Well, I never realised that.

Me: Now, you do.

Marvin: So where are you going Now?

Me: Where else ?Home of course.

Marvin: Right. I can give you a lift.

Me: Thanks in Advance.

Marvin: Where to ?

Me: Airport residential.

Marvin: Right.

Me: But why did you travel all the way from USA to Africa.

Marvin: That’s a story for another day.

We didn’t talk much in the car except some basic details .

From the look of him, he seemed to come from a rich family. It was all written over him. He drove me through the city of Accra and finally alighted me at Airport residential area. I gave him my contact number. We said goodbye and parted ways. I kept having this weird feeling that I knew him or was connected to him in some way.

Three days after meeting Marvin , he called me and said he wanted us to go on a rendezvous. At the scheduled time, which was 6.00 p.m, he came into my house with a Durango SRT Car. I boarded the car and we set off. It was a lovely atmosphere in his car as he was all smile. He switched on his DVD player and soon the music started blurring into the car. It was a Christian Hip Hop Titled ; Lord Give Me a Sign by DMX.That song was one of my favourite songs. I was amazed he chose that particular song to play.

Driving through the busy streets of Accra in the evenings is always a struggle. It is quite ironical that while we pride ourselves for being urban dwellers, we have to cope up with crime, air pollution from car exhaust pipes, urban noises emanating from fleets of cars in traffic, unnecessary screams and noise making from hooligans and vagabonds and the incessant playing of music by bar operators, discotheques, churches etc, we have those in the rural areas who enjoy relative peace, little crime cases and a carefree rural life.

Sometimes I wish I was born in a village so that I would be closer to nature. I was looking for the day my parents will take me to my hometown in the village called Chichibon, located in Atwima Kwanwoma District of Foase-Atwime which lies in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

Anyway, I was in the city for now and despite the seemingly uncomfortable aspect of city life, I still believe it was worthwhile being there. City life offered a lot of opportunities and advantages that the rural folks will never have. The gospel hip hop music continued in the background. I wanted to ask him where we were going but decided to just let it go. Soon we got to Bread & Wine Restaurant. It was one of the more expensive but truly exceptional restaurants in Accra. Perfect for candlelit suppers and celebratory dinners, the cuisine here is classically French with a la carte menu options including daube-de -boeuf, margret de-canard and blanquette de veau. Their service there is some of the best in the city.

Marvin held my hands as we walked into the bar. We got to a place very quiet and beautiful. How I wished he would tell me he loved me. He looked more handsome when he smiled. The song at the background made the place serene and lovely. It melted my heart away. I was drowning in the sweet music.

We stay there for almost three hours. I knew Loving Marvin will bring joy in my life. I have never felt love like that before.

“we need to go, darkness is approaching” Marvin said.

I didn’t want to go even though the place will be dangerous in the dark but I felt protected around him. He took my hands and stood me from the chair. We were both standing and facing each other. I stared at how he smiled, his lips was adorable for kissing. He raised his eyebrows with a smile. I wrapped my arms around his waist and rested my head on his soft chest. I felt his hands rubbing my back slowly. I moved so close to him that I felt his breath on my face

“kiss me Marvin”

Did I say that loud? I didn’t hear him say anything about what I said. He moved his lips more closer to mine. I closed my eyes waiting to feel his lips on mine but he rather kissed my cheeks. I was snapped out of my thoughts when he raised me from the ground and carried me in his hands out of the restaurants much to the astonishment of Ghanaian onlookers. I wrapped my hands around his neck while he walked to the car park. He smiled and looked at my face. I placed my left hand on his right lap.

“Do you love me?” He frowned his face a bit upon hearing that.

“Sarah, it’s too early to talk about love. Let’s take it one at a time,” he said.

I agree unwillingly.

We took a picture together.

After that, he drove me home and was about to go when I stopped him and asked, “Marvin, where do you live?”

To my amazement, he said he was staying in a hotel.

“Which hotel?” I asked.

Villa Monticello.

“Villa Monticello?” Why are you in a hotel instead of a house?

“Hmm. That’s a story for another day,” he said. But I want you to escort me to Airport Hills Tomorrow.

“Which time exactly?” I asked.

“9.00 a.m,”he answered.

I said, “ok.” and left.

The next morning

I woke up early in the morning and drove to Villa Monticello hotel. Villa Monticello hotel is a 4.5-star luxury hotel near Accra Mall with state of the art facilities that makes luxury a necessity. I could see why Marvin preferred that hotel. He was waiting for me at the entrance of the Hotel.

“Good morning dear,” I smiled broadly at him. He entered the car after responding to my greeting. He dressed like an executive Officer. He told me he wanted to buy a house, talking about it as if buying a house is like buying a sachet water. There were a lot of options but he zeroed in on Airport Hills. The least house there cost GHC17,100,000.($3,000,000)

We saw one beautiful mansion located in a highly secured and gated community. It was fully completed and “ready to move in” upon purchase. The serene feel in that neighborhood coupled with the comfort it assured made a perfect destination for every home owner. The property is a 5 Bedroom luxury home spread over two floors and on a 2-and-a quarter plot. It presents a good view of the Kotoka International Airport. It further presents a very spacious living and dining area with an additional kitchenette. Also available is a 2 Bedroom boys quarters, a 2-bay car garage, an en-suite security post, Electric Fence, Remote controlled main gate and a well manicured garden (with already installed sprinklers underground) and a swimming Pool.

Marvin bought that house, signed the legal documents and the rest of the property acquisition procedures were followed. Six hours later, the house keys were handed over to him. I was very happy for him but underneath my joy, I still want to know why Marvin travelled all the way from USA, leaving his family, come to Ghana and bought a house. After the handing over, Marvin used three days to make the necessary arrangements in the room that would make it more habitable and accommodating.

Somehow, I felt I knew him. Could he be the so -called Martin, pretending to be Marvin. I wish I could see Martin’s picture and made a comparison?

****

Who really is Marvin? Will he find his real parents?
