Released From Hospital

Sarah was released from hospital after undergoing medical treatment. She had lost her memory but the doctor assured her parents that there was a high possibility she could regain it. She had forgotten about Martin and all those experiences they shared. She could not even identify Martin’s picture clearly. That was the state of Sarah when she was released. Three months later, things improved a little. She could remember snippets of the past but what she could remember was so minute that it could hardly be called remembrance.

Her parents Stephen and Lucy did not try to make her remember her past. To them , it worked to their advantage. If Sarah couldn’t remember her past, then she couldn’t remember her love and obsession for Martin which had been the genesis of all the problems she had faced. Thus Sarah’s present predicament was something they were quite okay with indirectly. Sarah was reading an article in a book that interest her so much. The title was “Is love a decision or a feeling ?”

It reads :

“One of the more controversial statements made among some Christian or spiritual counselors is “love is a decision.” It is a statement that reminds couples to love the person, not the behavior.”

Sarah kept wondering how one can love a person but not his behaviour since the person and his behaviour was intricately linked.

“Many people do not see why a person would have to make the decision to love since they made that decision many years ago when they said “yes” to one another on their wedding day. The reason comes from the fact that feelings for a partner can waver depending upon many things: getting along, fighting, disappointment, power struggles, decision making and so on. It is normal in married life to have periods of both romance and disillusionment.This cycle is often repeated – sometimes over days, weeks, even months.

“Is it true?” asked Sarah. She tried to remember her previous relationships but alas, None came into her mind.

“Love is a decision, it is a judgment, it is a promise. If love were only a feeling, there would be no basis for the promise to love each other forever. A feeling comes and it may go. How can I judge that it will stay forever, when my act does not involve judgment and decision.”

One way to break out of disillusionment is by deciding to love.

“How?” Sarah asked. I would rather quit.”

“Wow, this article is getting very interesting but I still believe love is a combination of feeling and action.If I ever love someone, I will prove it though my actions.” She said.

“Sarah, where are you,”her mother called.

Sarah finished reading the article, close the book and went out to see her mother.

For most part, Sarah stayed at home. She wasn’t lonely as would have been expected because she preoccupied her mind with reading story books , watching movies, or chatting with her siblings Manilla or Jacqueline whenever they were around. Manilla went to NAFTI( National Film And Television Institute). She wanted to become a journalist in the future. Anytime she was around, she always keep her sister Sarah entertained. Manilla decided to assess the extent to which Sarah’s memory had been compromised so she intentionally began a conversation with her elder sister about Martin.

She asked Sarah, “do you remember Martin your boyfriend?”

Sarah didn’t seemed perturbed by the mention of the name “ Martin.” Manilla repeated what she said. Then Sarah said , I don’t know who exactly this Martin is that you seemed so enthusiastic about. You are even trying to tell me he’s my boyfriend. Manilla, I know you are a serious minded person so I am surprise you are becoming funny. I never have any boyfriend called Martin.”

Manilla looked at her sister with pity. It was obvious Sarah had forgotten about Martin and all her love for the young chap. Manilla could not help but recall how Sarah was highly obsessed with Martin to the extent of drugging Claud Colecraft’s drink to prevent her from wedding Martin. She recalled how she managed to salvage the situation by taking Sarah’s gown and acted as the maid of honour. Back to reality, she saw her sister who virtually had a tabula Rasa mind of the past.

She secretly pray to God to heal her sister’s mind. Then Sarah asked her, this Martin you are referring to, can you show me his picture?”

Manilla looked up and smiled. She told her sister to give her phone to her. Manilla scrolled through Sarah’s phone to get Martin’s picture. She was highly amazed when she couldn’t find a single photograph of Martin in Sarah’s phone Gallery. She wondered what happened.

Did Sarah delete Martin’s pictures. She doubted it. She weighed the possibilities and came to the conclusion that the pictures might have been deleted by her parents . Who? Stephen or Lucy. It was difficult to choose. Sarah knew her father didn’t like Martin again and could be the one who deleted the photographs. In the other hand, she also knew her mother Lucy disliked Martin because of the history Martin’s mother Doreen had with her Father Father Stephen. Both Parents now disliked Martin.

If Lucy could manipulate a DNA results just to ensure Martin and Sarah kept seeing each other as brother and sister and even allow Doctor Clark Iverson to sleep with her in order to achieve her objectives, then she could also be a prime suspect in deleting Martin’s pictures from Sarah’s phone.

Manilla decided to check through her phone gallery and showed Sarah the pictures she took with Martin during his wedding to Claudia. Then she received the shock of her life- There was no picture of Martin in her Photo Gallery!!!

It was then that realization dawned on her that the two parents might have collaborated to ensure that nothing remind Sarah of Martin. To do that effectively, they began from deleting Martin’s pictures from their phones. She vividly remembered her mother ask to use her phone a few months ago under the pretext of having a low battery. Was that just a mere coincidence or a deliberate move. She could do nothing than to nod her head.
