Thirty Minutes Short !!!

{Sarah’s Narration }

Bachelorette Party

Tomorrow would be the Great day of my wedding. Martin and his family came to perform the traditional marriage two days ago. We were looking forward to the white wedding. We planned the Bachelorette party on the evening prior to the Great Wedding. It was a small bachelorette party reserved for my bridesmaids and a few of my closest friends and female family members.

There were Posters, welcome signs, napkins, balloons with my name written boldly on it! I put my saying on the decorations to give the party a personal touch without spending a lot of time. It reads “KISS THE BACHELORETTE GOODBYE!”

The girls were very excited for the night.

All the party attendants were given a stylish customized T-shirts with the message “welcome to my Bachelorette party” emblazoned on them.

My friends brought a lot of Goodwill cards wishing me all the best in the new chapter of my life that was about to open. One card caught my attention and for a good reason. I don’t know who sent it because no name or address was written on it.

It reads; With warm wishes and hugs, I want to wish you best of luck on your wedding day and the new life you will embark upon.” “You are going to make the most beautiful bride anyone has ever laid eyes upon. Wishing you more love, happiness, and prosperity than you can ever imagine.” “You found Mr.Right.”

Together with my friends, we played and had fun. I was blindfolded and asked to identify a blue ballon but I pick the green one and they laughed at me. In one of the bachelorette game, someone brought a cake. Guess what , the cake resembled men’s “Joystick”

We crowned the Bachelorette party with sassy dances, foods and drinks.

The girls went quite overboard, twerking on ebony’s song,

Date Ur Fada

If you break my heart I go date your fada

Bony pon dis

Danny beatz

The 90’s badgyal trend

See I heard them say, heard them say

Boy you a player

You dey score like Messi play like Kaka

Dribble like Wakaso

You dey like Barcelona, Real Madrid

Arsenal, Man U, Chelsea……

Finally the night was deep and the party party came to an end. It’s time to rest and get prepare for the wedding proper.

The next day

The happy sun woke me up by lifting my curtains and filling my room with its rays. The sparkling and glimmering of its rays slithered through every nook and cranny of my room like a snake which had lost its way.

“Sarah! Hurry up, bath and let me beautify you for your wedding,”my beautician said standing by the doorway. My sisters came to my room to cheer me up.” Yoohooo!!

Finally you made it. The desire of your heart had finally come true.”

I chose Jacqueline my youngest sister to be the flower girl and Manilla as the maid of honour.

Manilla said, “ Sister, Hurry up. Let’s get it on. I can’t wait to be your maid of honour. At least I have that experience with Claudia’s….”

“DON’T ever call that name again!!” I responded quite angrily.

I’m sorry sister, just go and take your bath. We will be waiting for you. This is your day.”

I glanced at the wall clock. The time was 8. 05 a.m. The wedding was scheduled for 9.30 a.m. I went and had the best bath of my life. Then Veronica, the beautician dressed me up, taking her time to do a perfect make up for me. She consumed a lot of time but when she finished beautifying me, it was a masterpiece. In fact she’s a born make – up Artist.

With all the aura of of glee, I stared at my reflection in the big mirror.

9.00 a.m

“WOOOOW” the reflection I saw in the mirror didn’t resemble me. I looked like princess Diana of Wales, A member of the British royal family and first wife of Prince Charles of Wales and the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry.

“Hurry- up!!!, Sarah, We are getting late. We have just 30 minutes more,” my mother Lucy said. I knew for a fact that from our house to the blue lotus botanical gardens was just 20 minutes. We would still have 10 extra minutes to relax. Nevertheless, I increased my steps and headed towards my horse drawn carriage being sandwiched by Manilla, Jacqueline, my mother and father. I was all joyful. Tears of love sprung behind the plica seminularis part of my eyes. I held them back. It looked like a dream to me. The very day I was looking forward to had come. Now it looked unreal to me. I hope this was not a dream. Soon I would be Mrs. Vanderpuye. Suddenly the sensual thoughts of how my first sex on the honeymoon will be crept into my mind.

<<<In my mind’s eye, I saw Martin and I entertaining ourselves to Salsa dances at the refreshment ground. Then we moved towards our Honeymoon hut in the secret section of the botanical garden. It was a room made of flowers.

On arrival, Martin took me in. The bed was made of roses. I felt like Eve in the Garden of Eden. He hugged me and gave me a kiss. On the rose bed I rolled towards the edge against the flower wall. He slid his hand beneath the sheets of flowers resting it on my waist. He joined me on bed and rolled me over. His soft lips touched mine.

My hands reached out to hold him around the neck drawing him even closer…….’

—Few minutes later —-

I lifted my legs to mount the horse drawn carriage.”Saraaaaahhhh! Watch your step!!!, I heard my mother saying.

The next moment I heard screams from my sisters too. Even that I couldn’t come back from my day dreaming fully until I felt a very sharp pain at the back of my head. My occipital bun( back of the head) collided with the cemented floor.! Suddenly, I knew no more as I blacked out.

[Martin’s Narration ]

9.45 a.m @ the Blue Lotus Botanical Gardens

The night before the wedding, I sent an anonymous Goodwill Bachelorette card to her. I really wanted this wedding to be on a low key but it had become flamboyant because I wanted to impress Sarah .Today is the day I have been looking forward to.

It’s a fact that Weddings are always special occasions. Nevertheless I had a little bit of phobia for marriages. Based on my past experiences, my marriage to Sarah would be the third attempt at wedding. The first one ended in Divorce. The second one was interrupted and stopped by Sarah. This would be the third one.

I remembered Roberto. A friend I used to have way back in the university. He had Gamophobia and cannot be in any committed relationship. I asked him why he feared commitment in a relationship like marriage. He said most women he talked to who have been married for a while weren’t happy in the marriage but it wasn’t gender specific. Most young men weren’t happy either.

Now I seemed to have Gamophobic symptoms. I was becoming worried and anxious. Sarah and her family were supposed to be here 15 minutes ago but still they had not turn up.

The long arm of trepidation enroped me. Had Sarah changed her mind in the last moment? NO. Sarah couldn’t do that. Not after all the emotional traumas she passed through for the sake of this love.

*10.00 a.m

A lot of wedding attendants were getting anxious. I was worried. From time to time , Pastor El-Bernard Eshun and a section of the wedding guests stole glances at me. He even sent a member to ask me what was going on. Then my best man and work colleague,Jaimie Mackey received a call. His face distorted into a frown. My heart missed a thousand times. He walked towards me and upon reaching me handed over the mobile phone to me saying , “It’s from your Father in law, Mr. Stephen Donkor.”

I took the phone and said “Hello!”

Stephen spoke in a sad tone, “Martin, I’m afraid the wedding cannot come on. Your wife- to -be had slipped and fell, hitting her head hard on the cemented floor.

My heart thumped sporadically as I exclaimed , “WHAT??!!!!”

Stephen continued talking, “We are in the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital now!!” I breathed in and out but my lungs had suddenly tightened, to block air from entering his lung.

Starved for air, my heart raced at tremendous speeds and my shallow lungs rose and fail. It felt like eternity and an invisible force seemed to crush me from every direction. Each second submerged in fear make marks on my heart and my medulla Oblongata seemed to shut down and I couldn’t distinguish between reality and dream. I struggled through the difficult steep edges of confusion and brought myself back to reality.

“PASTOR, MY WIFE IS AT THE HOSPITAL!!!” I screamed out loud and didn’t wait to see the reaction of the pastor and the wedding guests before running out of the Garden towards the Hospital.
