Cynthia’s POV:

” Who is this guest of yours?” Bella asked and I could hear her chewing a gum from outside the door.

Paul was losing his temper. I could hear him raising his voice a little. ” Are you deaf? I told you to go home. I will call you when I need you.”

And he shut the door in her face.

I looked away, pretending not to know what just happened but my mind was troubled and lots of question and speculations began running through my mind.

Why is Bella here? How did she know who Paul is and why was Paul anxious not to have her come inside the house?

Or could it be that Bella is Paul’s…

” Sorry about that,” Paul apologized as he sat opposite me.

” It’s nothing,” I said, my mind confused. ” Who was that anyway?”

” A friend.”

” A friend?” I asked, and this troubled me more. How can a pastor’s son be friends with a girl like Bella. This was too much to take in. I definitely wasn’t comfortable with it at all.

” Where do you know her from?” I asked.

He stared at me and I saw his eye brows drawing down into a frown. ” And what does that have to do with you? I’m I not free to have friends or don’t you have male friends as well?”

” I don’t have male friends,” I defended myself. ” And yes, I do think it has something to do with me. I mean, we’re going to get married. It’s my concern to know who a girl is especially when she’s the one paying you a visit.”

” Let me ask you a question,” he leaned forward and pointed a finger at me. ” Have I proposed to you yet?”

I reared back my head. ” Not yet.”

” Have I gone to see your people yet?”

” No.”

” Have I paid your bride price yet? Have I fixed a date for our marriage, have I even started courting you yet?”

” Paul, there’s no need for you to raise your–”

” Why wouldn’t I raise my voice,” he snapped and for a moment, I thought he was going to hit me. ” Why won’t I, when you’re snooping into my private life when you’ve barely being to know me. I don’t know you and you don’t know me neither. We’re both strangers to each other. This is my life and this is my house. It’s my right to invite as many of my friends as I wish. This marriage between us was fixed by my foster parents. If it wasn’t for them, you wouldn’t even know I even existed so I’d advice you just mind your own business until the day I begin the proper introduction into our wedding affairs. I’m I understood?”

My heart was pounding by my side. He looked like a beast when he’s angry. I became scared of him. He was Soo mean looking I was short of words.

Then he softened and looked away. ” I’m….I… I’m sorry about that. I guess I said a little too much. Forgive me.”

His composure returned and he looked more human and good-looking once again.

I calmed down even though I was still scared of him. ” Don’t apologise. It’s my fault actually. I should’nt be snooping into your private affairs. I’m sorry.”

He stood up and wandered over to where I sat and sat beside me. His hands held my shoulders and he smiled, looking apologitc and repentant.

” Let’s forget about what happened. How about we get into the kitchen. I’m starving.”

And throwing what just happened at the back of my mind, I returned his smile and nodded. ” Alright.”

Gloria’s POV:

A middle aged woman in a silk white dress jerked opened the front door and demanded curtly. ” Who are you and what do you want?”

I regarded her. There was nothing special about her looks and the make up she’d applied were a cover to hide the blemishes on her face. One thing about her was certain. She was a woman of substance with a hint of sadism lurking at her every being.

” Sorry for disturbing you,” I said, feeling embarrassed. ” I saw the vacancy outside your house. I understand you want a maid.”

She stared oddly at me, studying me from head to toes. I had made an attempted to look modest and presentable even though I hated wearing clothes that makes me look like Cynthia.

” You’re quite pretty.”

That was one bit I wasn’t expecting from her but I tried to smile it off. ” Thank you.”

She winced. ” I don’t like pretty girls. It’s tough to trust pretty girls these days.”

This got me on the offensive. ” If that’s the case, then maybe I should leave.”

” I never said you should leave,” she snapped, opening the door wider. ” Come on in. I still have to interview you myself.”

She left me at the door and I followed her. She was rude. That was one thing I noted. I decided I would have to watch my step in dealing with this woman, Adeola’s wife.

” I won’t hire you unless I know more about you,” she went on, sitting on a chaise lounge while I took the arm chair. ” Now that you’re here, let’s get this interview started. My name is Linda but I think it’d be nice if you called me “madam”. It shouldn’t be difficult, or do you think it will?”

” Not at all, madam,” I said, my smile vanishing. If there was one thing I hated more than anything else, was having another woman bossing me around.

She waved her hand in the air. ” Alright, alright, alright, away from all that. So what’s your name?”

” Gloria, madam.”

Her eyes scanned me. She wasn’t missing one single detail. ” Are you a student.”

” Yes, madam. I’m actually in my third year in the University.”

” Why would you want to work for me as a maid?”

Because your husband told me to, you ugly wench! But I didn’t say that. In as much as she’s as annoying as hell, I kept my cool.

” I guess it’s because I needed a job. I don’t want to be reliant on anybody.”

Brief and simple. If she wasn’t satisfied with that, she can go to hell.

” Let me ask you, do you go to church?”

I saw this one coming. Adeola warned me concerning this part. ” Sometimes, when I feel like it.”

” Well, in this house, you’re not going to feel like it. Whenever I want to go to church or night vigils, you must accompany me there. It’s your job to see that my pastors are well taken care of when they visit and that I am attended to at any moment in church. I’m I understood?”

And I thought Cynthia was a religious fool. Guess this woman was in a class of her own. I don’t like this and I really mean it.

” I understand, madam.”

” Lastly, do you like kids?”

” Ofcourse I do, madam.”

” What about married men? Do you like them as well?”

Holly Christ! What kind of nonesense is that one ehh? This was such an awkward embarrassing question to ask. If I didn’t get a hold of myself, I would have ran up to her and smacked her in the face. What an insult.

” I stay off trouble, madam. I don’t interfere with what God has joined together.”

This pleased her. She clapped her hands. ” That’s impressive, you’re hired.”

I looked up sharply. Just like that? I had thought she’d be more cautious about hiring me.

She got up and moved upstairs. ” Wait for me here. I’ll be right back.”

I waited and it was then I took my time to look the sitting room over. Everything was expensively furnished with the best of anything a wealthy man would be proud to own.

I had known Adeola to be a wealthy business man but I never expected him to be this wealthy. All these money and still, he has a shrewd wife that causes him headache and a son that hates him. To be honest, I felt kinda jealous of Linda. She’s one lucky witch, I’d give it to her.

Before I knew it, she returned back with a parcel in her hand. She threw the parcel at me and returned back to her seat. ” Those are your uniforms. Try them on.”

I glared at her. She was Soo rude. Tossing a parcel at me like that? Who does she thinks she is?

It took me a hell of an effort to swallow my anger and over look it. ” I am to wear a uniform?”

She rolled her eyes. ” Is that supposed to be a question? Stop asking silly questions. I’m going to give you three hours. Three hours to return to your home and put your affairs in order. You’re returning here to start work immediately.”

I was startled. ” I’m starting work today?”

” Indeed,” she snapped impatiently. ” The job is simple enough if you use your brain. You don’t look a fool so I expect you to give me your best of service. So long as you keep the place tidy, help me when I want help and do as you’re told, I’m happy. You’ll make me happy, won’t you?”

This was one weird woman. ” I will do my best.”

She nodded. ” I hope you would. I need the best of service and I also need patience. I’m an impatient woman and I’m very demanding. It’s funny how people see me these days. They hardly understand me that’s why I haven’t kept a maid longer than two weeks. They get tired of me and quit immediately but I’m sure you’re going to be different, wouldn’t you?”

” I will do my best, madame.”

She had that that-is-more-like-it looks on her face that sickened me.

” You had better do your best else, you might be the one running to quit the job.”

” I won’t quit,” I said, becoming serious but my voice was a bit off patience. ” And nobody is going to make me quit.”

” That’s a good girl,” her face suddenly went dark and she rasped at me. ” Now, get off now. You know what to do don’t you.”

She had left out the payment part but I didn’t bother to ask her how much she was going to pay me. Adeola had already promised me a better amount than what she has to offer me.

” Thank you, madam,” I rose to my feet. Just when I was about leaving, I heard a tiny voice reaching me down from upstairs above.

” Mom?”

I turned and so did Linda. We both glanced up at the little boy peering down at me from the barrister rails.

” Oh, baby,” Linda stood up and ran upstairs to where her child was and scooped him in her arms.

I stared at this little boy. He was cute just like any rich kid but there was something else about him. His eyes radiated a sense of interest in me. I realized he couldn’t take his eyes off me.

How weird. And he’s just ten years old.

” Mom who is that?” He asked and from his voice, I knew he’d just woken from sleep.

” What are you still doing here?” Linda shouted down at me. ” You know what to do don’t you?”

” Sorry, madam,” I apologise and opened the doorknob, hating her like I’ve never hated anyone before.

” She’s our new Maid,” was the last thing I heard from Linda’s lips as she explained my new job to her son.

The moment, I opened the door, someone stepped in. It was Adeola. He stared at me without making or giving me an expression. He just walked past me as if I was a stranger to him.

He stood in the middle of the room and pointed at me. ” Who is that girl, Linda?”

” And what’s your bloody business, Adeola?” Linda fired at him, still holding her son in her arm.

” I’m just asking a simple question,” he said, trying not to raise his voice too much. ” Who is she?”

” She’s a w---e I picked from the street for you,” she snapped. ” You can’t tell me you don’t like her, do you?”

I felt my cheeks growing red. How dare she call me a w---e and in front of her son? I’m not against them quarreling or throwing blows at each other but using me to fire words at each other was something I wasn’t going to stand.

” You hired a maid? I told you repeatedly we don’t need a maid. You can do all these house chores for yourself,” Adeola said.

” And I’m still asking,” she dropped the boy on the sofa and moved to face Adeola. ” How is that your f*cking business?”

Without looking back, I opened the door and slammed it shut, aware that Junior, Adeola’s little son was still staring after me.

Cynthia’s POV:

Lucy was seated next to Priscilla when I came in.

” What’s wrong? Who died?” I asked.

” Priscilla’s been crying since she got home this afternoon,” Lucy explained, worriedly. ” She hasn’t eaten anything nor even said a thing.”

” What’s the matter with her?” I approached Priscilla’s bed. ” Is she sick?”

” To be honest, I have no idea what’s the matter with her. She came back home in a new dress. I couldn’t figure out what went wrong.”

I leaned forward to study Priscilla. She was hiding her face in the pillow, sobbing like a helpless abandoned baby.

” Priscilla, what’s the matter?” I asked.

She didn’t answer, instead her cries grew.

This was confusing. Lucy and I exchanged looks. I’ve seen Priscilla cried many times but this one was the first time I’ve ever seen her look this bad.

” Maybe something bad Happened to her last night,” Lucy said, eyeing her. ” I have a funny feeling she ran into trouble.”

“Priscilla,” i shooked her. ” Come on,stop crying like a baby and talk to us. We’re here for you.”

” Just,” she choked in tears..” j-just leave me….alone.”

” Oh come on, Priscilla,” Lucy grabbed her arm. ” Stop being–”

She pulled her face out of the pillow and shouted at Lucy, her face a mask of burning fury.

” I said leave me alone!!!”

Lucy let go off her immediately as if she had just gone red hot. Priscilla’s face was swollen from all sides and I saw a hand printed on her cheeks.

She got up, wore her foot wear and walked out of the room, shutting herself in the bathroom.

Lucy looked hurt and I saw her sobbing like a little girl.

” Oh, dear,” I moved up to her and held her in my arms. ” Stop crying, Lucy. I’m sure she didn’t mean to hurt you.”

Lucy buried her face on my chest and cried more. ” I was just trying to help.”

” It’s alright,” I patted her hair. ” Let’s just give her time. She’ll come around. I’m sure of it.”

Just then, Gloria and Bella came in.

” Na lie,” Bella was speaking to Gloria. ” So you’re really going to do it?”

” Not in front of the children, Bella,” Gloria teased, seeing Lucy and I were looking at them. ” What Happened? Why is Lucy crying?”

” Something is wrong with Priscilla,” I explained, my eyes on Bella.

Bella was still chewing her gum. ” What is wrong with Priscilla?”

” She wouldn’t say anything to us,” Lucy sobbed. ” She was Soo mean.”

Gloria sighed and walked over to her bed, she brought out her suitcase and began throwing her clothes in. ” Where is she now?”

” In the bathroom,” I said. ” Still crying. I think she met with some bad boys. Her face were swollen from beatings. We’ve got to help her.”

Bella didn’t say anything. She wandered over to her bed and fell on it, closing her eyes as if everything was Normal. Gloria was still packing. She didn’t say anything either.

The silence in the room was Soo uncomfortable.

” Hey, I said something just now,” I called. ” Won’t you guys do something?”

” What do you want us to do?” Gloria asked, putting her shoes in another bag.

” I don’t know, go to the door, knock on it, ask her what’s wrong and try to help her out? Come on, aren’t we roommates? Let’s help her.”

Bella smiled. ” The same Priscilla who slapped me in the face because I advised her against trusting her bestie. And you expect me to go in there and help her again? What if she slaps me.”

” She wouldn’t do that,” I snapped, not because of what she said but because of what happened at Paul’s place. I was becoming angry at her and u didn’t know why.

” Where are you going to?” Lucy asked, leaving my arms. She walked up to Gloria and sat down on her bed. ” Are you relocating?”

Gloria smiled. ” Not at all. I’ve got a new job.”

” A new job?” Lucy asked, cleaning her eyes with the back of her arm. ” What type of job? Are you going to be living there?”

” Well, not for long but I’ll be visiting once in a while.”

Bella called across her bed. ” Yeah, the less you know, the better for you, Lucy.”

” Oh,” Lucy nodded in understanding. ” You’re going to be living with a rich man, right?”

Bella and Gloria exchanged looks, then laughed.

” Like Bella said,” Gloria beamed. ” The less you know, the better for you.”

Lucy shrugged. ” If that’s the case, I’ll help you pack.”

” Wait a minute,” I stood up sharply. ” What’s going on here? Have everyone forgotten about Priscilla?”

No one answered me. Even Lucy looked tired and stressed out. She didn’t even look my way. It made me felt like a fool.

From the bathroom, Priscilla cried more!!!
