Two days passed since I was thrown in jail.. Believe me.. It was hell.. I couldn’t bear to eat except to drink water.. The food was just horrible, cockroaches were found inside them.. The police wouldn’t allow us to go out and relieve ourselves.. Thank God I hadn’t consume any heavy food that could make me shit.. The only thing I had to do was piss and we had to do it inside the cell… The smell of piss and shit filled the place.. The police made things worst by also pissing in front of the cell… Their fluid gathered there like a swamp and it attracted mosquitoes, lots of mosquitoes.. These miserable creatures bombarded us at night biting and s-----g the blood out of us.. God… It was unbearable…

Just when I thought I wasn’t going to get out of that hell… God saved my life on the third day..

That morning, I was sitting down with my arms around me, When one of the police men called me and said I was released, He gave me my clothes and showed me the way… As I came out of the station, I saw a police van parked in front with it’s door open .. One of the policemen grabbed me, holding me as if I was a thief..

Police man Where you dey go?

Steven I thought you said I was free to go..

Policeman Not yet… There’s someone who wants to see you.. Oya enter..

I entered without hesitation.. Within Minutes, we were on the road… We finally arrived at bristol palace close to farm center.. My guest was this was where Monica is… I wonder what she wants with me now…

After the van parked, I was told to go in.. The hotel personnel in there showed me the way taking me to whoever wanted to see me.. Finally, we reached a room where there was security on the front.. After checking us they allowed us in and I as entered, there was Monica..

Despite her new look I recognized her, She was really beautiful… Like a goddess of beauty.. Even Rihanna wouldn’t match with her in terms of beauty.. She wore a white shirt and a short black skirt and a pantyhose under.. She had one expensive necklace and wristwatch on her and the sweet smelling fragrance on her was enough to drive a man wild… She was totally magnificent.

She sat comfortably looking at me as I walked in.. There was a cup of cappuccino on the table she was sitting at.. She asked one of the hotel personnel to serve me a cappuccino as I sat down.. After that, she asked the security to leave us both alone in the room.

We both sat without saying anything.. Monica tried to smile at me but I gave her a serious and blank face to let her know this was no time to smile..

Monica Hey…

Steven ………..

Monica I hope they haven’t done anything bad to you…

Steven ……….

Monica Can you.. please.. say something..

Steven What do you want me to say? Tell me?

Monica Look, I’m sorry if I cause you any pain.. It was never my intention..

Steven Oh really? It wasn’t your intention.. So lying about your memories wasn’t your intention right?

Monica I’m sorry.. Please forgive..

Steven Oh, I have already forgiven you.. In fact I regret nothing.. Our meeting, the time we spent together.. All of it..

Monica I’m sorry Steven.. I never wanted any of this to happen.. I wanted to tell you but…..

Steven Look.. Why am I here? I’m sure it’s not because you want me back..

Monica I do want you Steven.. But my dad has threatened to get rid of you if I don’t so his bidding.. I’m sorry..

Steven So what now?

Monica (crying) I’m sorry we can no longer… (sniff) be together… But here…

.

Monica reached inside her bag and brought out check.. She placed it in front of me, she tried to hold my hand that I placed on the table but immediately I felt her hand, I pulled away.. Monica was surprised by what I did… She quietly pulled her hands away feeling hurt and ashamed…

Steven What’s this?

Monica Its a check of 20 million… Its all for what you’ve done for me…

.

Steven Unbelievable… So you thought I did everything for you just so I could get something in return..

Monica N-no, I…

.

Steven I can’t believe you… Everything I did was just because I wanted to.. I didn’t ask for you to pay me.. All I asked in return was gratitude and this… This is your gratitude?

Let me tell you something.. I spent two days in a cell of piss and shit and despite going through that.. I never for once regretted finding you on the road and doing all those things for you… But what I’m angry about is the secrets you hid from me.. And because of that, I’m in this mess… You told me you hated keeping secrets and I told you everything about me..

But you didn’t…. The Monica I knew was gone… But this one here.. is a stranger.. I’m through with this.. I’m not some poor chap that can’t earn his living..You can keep your money… I don’t need it..

Seeing how things have become, I’m happy you’ve found your family and I wish you the best of luck… Good bye Monica.

Monica (crying) Please Steven… Wait.. I’m sorry…

I didn’t wait for her to finish.. I stood up and walked out of the room, I walked passed the securities and went my way… Soon I was out of Bristol palace and out on the streets..

Minutes later, I arrived at my house… Elena and Abubakar where outside when I arrived.. They welcomed me and checked if I was okay..

After I had relaxed and washed my body clean.. They came and asked what had happened.. and I told them everything.

Elena So they locked you up? God….

Abubakar I tried looking for you so I could bail you but I couldn’t..

Steven Even if you came.. They wouldn’t allow you…

Abubakar So Monica allowed you to stay for two days in that shit hole? I can’t believe this… So she’s this cruel..

Steven No.. Don’t blame her. her father caused this not her…

Elena So what now?

.

Steven Now…… Life returns to normal.. Just like the way it was before without her…

Abubakar We’re so sorry for what happened Steven…

Steven No, it’s okay.. Maybe that’s how things were meant to be.

Abubakar and Elena sympathized with me.. Hoping they could cheer me up but they was nothing they could do… What’s done is done.

Days passed, after Monica and I spilt.. Thanks to her dad.. It wasn’t easy getting her out of my mind, not after we’ve bonded this much.. People began to ask questions about where Monica was but the only answer I could tell them was “She was gone.. ”

My mom didn’t know about what happened until after a week later… She came by to my house asking me about Monica’s whereabouts…

Vivian Steven.. Where’s Monica? I haven’t seen her o… Is everything alright?

Steven She’s not here.. She’s gone.

.

Vivian She’s gone? Where… Is she coming back?

.

Steven No mama.. She isn’t.. Ever.

Vivian I don’t understand… What happened?

.

Steven Monica and I are no more.. Things didn’t work out between us, so we split.. I’m sorry mama..

My mom couldn’t take the news about our breakup in fact she thought I was lying… She later found out the truth from Elena.

My mom really felt bad about it… She asked me to try and see if Monica would accept me back but I tols her it was impossible that Monica had probably forgotten about me.. But in truth she didn’t… I lied to my mom about that part… During those days.. Monica had called my number several times but I refused to pick.. I did block her several times but she always managed to call, so to cut her off completely… I changed my SIM and threw the old one away…..

We both live separate lives now and she’s way beyond my status, and its best if we both moved on..

A week had passed since Steven and I spilt up.. I was now back in Abuja with my father… Some were happy about my return.. Some were not especially Penelope and her son.. They only pretended to celebrate my return but I knew they didn’t mean it…

My father wanted me to back to work and also prepare for my marriage with Gabriel but I demanded I needed some time to myself for a while…

I tried calling Steven but he wouldn’t pick.. He blocked my number to stop me from calling him so I changed my SIM over and over again just to call him and finally.. His number was no longer working.. He must have changed Sin cards…

I couldn’t get hold of myself.. I really missed him… I know I lied.. But couldn’t he at least hear me out and understand why I did this…. I really wanted to talk to him but I realized what difference would it make now..

So after a while, I got back to work… To my dad’s company…. Things hadn’t changed much since I was gone… Most of the personnels there were happy to see me return….

Rita and I also patched things up… It wasn’t her fault after all, she thought she was helping a friend.. If only she knew what I was going through, she wouldn’t have told my father…

My father and I weren’t talking so much ever since I returned… I did my best to avoid him and he took notice of that… So one morning, we were having a meeting about the deciding if the price for products should be increased or not.. Before any decision I made was approved by the board but now.. I just sat looking at them without saying a d--n word… Of course they asked if I had any suggestions but I said no…. After a while, the meeting ended and before I could leave.. My father asked me to stay that he wanted to talk to me…

Williams Monica, I want to have a word with you..

Monica I’m listening..

Williams Why are you so dull? You behave as if you don’t want to be here… What’s going on?

Monica You already know the answer to that question… Everything I had cherished and loved was taken away from you… My life in Kano may not be much but it was better than here… You wouldn’t understand.. How could you..

You let your eyes deceive you on what he looks on the outside instead of you seeing what he is on the inside… And this all wouldn’t have happened in the first place if you had allowed me to choose who I wanted to be with.. I wouldn’t have ran to Kano in the first place… This is all your fault.. Now if you’ll excuse me.. I need to get back to my office.. Sir.

I took my documents and left my dad alone in the meeting room, As I arrived at my office, I saw a man in there…

Monica Excuse me.. How did you get in here? And who are you?

Gabriel My dear wife, it’s me.. Your husband!

Monica Excuse me? Look I don’t have time for such nonsense.. State your business and leave.

Gabriel Goodness.. You need manners.. You’re not suppose to be talking to me like that.. As for who I’m I… I’m Gabriel..

Monica Gabriel? So you’re the pig my father paired me up with… Unbelievable..

Gabriel For now I’ll forgive your rude remarks… Soon you and I will be married..

Monica You’re a fool… If I were you, I’d rather not get married with someone like me cause I’ll make life a living hell for you.. Trust me.. If you don’t have anything to say, Get out!.

The fool stood up and walked bashfully out of my office as soon as he walked out, I slammed the door behind him… What nonsense.. This is the kind of man my father wants to marry? This egomaniac? God….

After that, I went to my table to work on the documents , in that moment.. My mind went back to Steven wondering what he was doing right now.

I couldn’t believe it… Monica was back in Abuja.. I was so angry I didn’t know what to do… Everything I’ve planned for, the money I spent had all gone to waste..

Ever since Monica came back… Life in this house had changed… Williams no longer paid attention to me.. As if I wasn’t here… Monica was treated like the queen in the castle.. God I hate her..

Frank hadn’t shown up ever since he returned with Williams together with Monica.. I wanted to blast that idiot… He was the reason why all these happened if he had stick to the plan, That w---e wouldn’t be alive..

So one Tuesday afternoon… Frank unexpectedly dropped into the house….

Frank Penelope! It’s been a while..

Penelope Don’t ever call me that, you dog.. It’s Mrs. Williams to you..

Frank What’s all this?

Penelope You dare to ask? I gave you a task and you failed.. YOU FAILED!!!

Frank Hey listen.. I almost had her.. Just as I was about to take her away her dad showed up.. I had to look for an excuse to explain, why I was there… This isn’t my fault.

Penelope God….. Now I have to stick to plan B.. And I sure hope this works..

Frank It has to.. Gabriel has to play his part well for this to work.. But will Monica Accept the marriage proposal?

Penelope She has to.. And I’ll make sure Williams forces her to do… All i have to do is wait and watch.
