STEVE

The world might go on and judge my actions but that’s why people have mouths right? I’m not trying to justify my actions neither am I saying Maria has not been a good woman or wife to me.

We’ve been married for 4years and she’s been a dutiful wife. She is a perfect description for an I deal house wife, she has a calm spirit, very slow to react, doesn’t talk easily and adapts no matter wherever she finds herself , I think those were the qualities that drove me crazy about her but honestly, is that all marriage is all about?

I’m not trying to be selfish or inconsiderate, I know she’s done a lot for me. When I was broke to the lowest, there was only one person there giving me all the pep talks, only one person who believed in my dreams and pushed me to it and that person is Maria but, but… I don’t really know, I guess things have changed.

I never saw the signs at first or perhaps I ignored them but if this is marriage it’s honestly not what I want. I know she has done a lot for this marriage but I can’t stay stuck in this hole for the rest of my life.

‘ Good evening babe. ‘ She greeted.

‘ Evening. Where’s Mercedes? ‘

‘ Sleeping already, it’s late. How was your day? ‘

‘ Sleeping? It’s late? And why are you still awake? ‘

‘ Because my husband is out. ‘

‘ And you made it a point to sit awake just to remind me that it’s late? Why? Oh! I get… ‘

She interrupted before I could finish

‘ I’ve ran a bath for you already, how about you go upstairs while I get your food ready. ‘

‘ Really Maria? Tell me, what’s your plan? ‘

‘ Honey I don’t know what you’re talking about. ‘

This is really the part of her I hate so much. I wanted to talk to her, to know how much she knows. I wanted to sort it all out with her. It’s obvious I don’t want the marriage anymore and I want it out of my life but she’s not giving me any chance to.

I can’t file for a divorce cause she’ll definitely win. She’ll run me empty if she wants, she used to be a brilliant lawyer until I asked her to quit her job. I don’t know how to bring it all up, how can I? How do I say it? And she’s refused to be upset with anything I do.

She was at the dinning room setting the table when I came back.

‘ Food is ready, come and eat. ‘

She looked so innocent and ignorant but as said, never judge a book by it’s cover. Judging from the woman she used to be, she’s nothing close to ignorant. Most times, I can’t believe this was the same woman I met 4years back.

‘ Maria. ‘

‘ You don’t like the food? I could get you something else. ‘

‘ Why are you doing this Maria? You know am tired already. ‘

‘ You’re tired? I could always give you a massage. Finish up. ‘

Frustrated I hit my clenched fist on the table.

‘ Stop that, you don’t want to wake Mercedes up. ‘

‘ What are you Maria? Women don’t act the way you do. What are you? ‘

‘ I’m human and your wife too. ‘

‘ You know am cheating right? ‘

‘ I won’t deny. ‘..

‘ Then what’s all this? Why ain’t you saying anything? Why are you like this? ‘

She smiled as always

‘ You! What do you want me to say? What do you expect me to do? See, those questions are yours because you should know by now that am not the enduring type but still I know what the law is all about. ‘

‘ What are you going to do? ‘

‘ You told me already , did you forget? You told me at the alter before God and man, for better for worse. So what are you going to do? I’ll be upstairs. ‘

She walked out on me.

Maria went to the city mall to shop with her daughter Mercedes. It was Saturday and she always tried to spend time as much as she can with her daughter. At least, she’s the only thing that makes sense in her marriage at the moment. She had called her brother earlier because she was exhausted and needed someone to talk to.

‘ Uncle! ‘ Mercedes jumped into his arms.

‘ Hey! Slow down baby! ‘ Maria said.

‘ My baby Bee.. How are you? ‘

‘ I’m fine and I’m no longer a baby. ‘

‘ Awnnn… That’s my baby girl. ‘

‘ Hey Maria, ‘

He hugged and pecked her on the cheek.

‘ How have you been Anthony? ‘

‘ I should be asking you, you should see yourself. You look drained. ‘

‘ let’s sit. ‘

‘ Steve is cheating on me. He wants out of the marriage. ‘

Anthony laughed.

‘ you’re joking right? Steve is cheating on you? After everything you’ve been through for him? Jesus Christ! I’ll look for that bastard! ‘

‘ No! Stop, I’ll handle it, trust me. Please. ‘

‘ You became something very different from yourself after you got married to that ingrate. You gave your career, your friends, your social life up for that animal just in a space of four years and only for him to cheat on you? ‘

‘ Anthony! ‘

‘ I might be a jerk but I know how to treat a woman I call my own. ‘

‘ Anthony. ‘

He turned on hearing his name.

‘ Anthony so this is the reason you sent me out of your house? ‘ Nina said.

‘ Are you really stupid? This is my wife and daughter, now leave! ‘

‘ We both know you’re not married so quit the lies. ‘ Nina retorted.

‘ Baby who’s this again? Don’t tell me its one of your whores. You should have made a better choice. ‘ Maria said.

‘ What?! ‘ Nina exclaimed.

‘ Take yourself with whatever dignity you have left and get the hell out of here before I show you what wives do to side chicks. Out! ‘

She yelled and Nina walked out without a word.

‘You still gat it in you sis ‘ Anthony laughed.

‘ And that is the way you treat your women right? ‘ maria asked.

‘ That cheap chicken. ‘

They both laughed.

‘ Back to Steve. ‘

‘ Anthony, I am not a fool okay? Don’t forget I’m a certified criminal lawyer. ‘

‘ So what’s your plan? ‘

‘ First of all, you’re taking Mercedes home to mom. ‘

‘ And what next? ‘

‘ That’s up to me. ‘

‘ Keeping secrets? ‘

‘ Nope! You’re not married yet neither do you have anything like a stable relationship. Trust me, it will be toxic taking marriage advice from you brother. ‘

They laughed.

‘ I don’t but I think I found a lady already. Do you remember April? ‘

‘ April? As in April jayden ? ‘

‘ Who else, yes. ‘

‘ You’re mad! I won’t take a second look at you if I were April. ‘

‘ I’m willing to change for her. ‘

‘ Is that the shit you’ve been telling yourself? ‘

‘ I’m serious sis. How can I get her, she’s not looking at me. ‘..

‘ Why should she? First of all, change and let her see it in you. And judging from what I’ve seen so far, you’re far from change. ‘

They chatted for a while before Anthony took Mercedes to their mom and Maria went home.

On getting home, Maria could hear loud music from her house. It was so unusual for Steve to do that. Curiously, she stepped out of her car and rushed into the house.

The scene in front of her provoked the beast in her.

‘ What the hell is going on here!’ she yelled.

Steve turned, he didn’t expect her to be back this early but one thing was sure, he was trying his best to make sure he frustrates her till she will be forced to call it a quit.

‘ A party honey. Come join us. ‘

Maria went to the music player and turned it off.

‘ Young ladies, your party ends here. Now I want you to get your bags this minute and leave else you will be blamed for what happens next because even your beloved Steve won’t be able to save you from where I will send you to. ‘

There was absolute silence as the whores stared at Steve to say something but he wasn’t able to.

‘ Okay, you think am joking right? Okay! ‘

Maria moved to get her bag and Steve turned to his whores.

‘ If you know what’s better for you, please leave this moment because she’s not joking. Leave! ‘

‘ You’re such an ass Steve! ‘

One of the whores said as they left the house.

Maria came down and everywhere was all cleared out.

‘ Steve, I maybe be silent but make this the last time you ever disrespect my house again. Are we clear! ‘

Steve nodded.

‘ I said, are we clear! ‘ she yelled.

Steve has never seen Maria this way before and it scared the hell out of him ..

‘ Yes we we are. ‘

He stammered

‘ Good! ‘

She headed upstairs and stopped half way.

‘ Steve ‘

She called

‘ I love you babe! ‘
