I Am Able - S01 E30

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 30

Fatimah.

Two months ago, Munir reported me to my parents the moment he saw me with Yusuf. If it was someone else, it would not have been a problem but Yusuf was the son of my father’s biggest rival in the cement market. My father was so angry, same as my mother. Munir had told them that Yusuf and I were dating. Sometimes, I used to wonder what kind of a person Munir was. But I was sure he was a very big fool and an impotent.

That day, I wept until I eventually lost my voice. I was so sad because none of my words mattered to my parents anymore, they believed in whatever Munir said. Thence, they warned me to stay away from Yusuf and since then neither I nor Yusuf had talk to each other yet — not even on phone. He literally knew our obvious differences as well, hence he maintained his lane.

People had wondered a lot how Yusuf and I distanced ourselves from each other. Actually, we didn’t used to talk even if we meet in the rest area. We would only glance at each other, that’s all. Even the glancing, I had tried my possible best to stop it but I couldn’t because he was already on my head.

Today, I decided to stay in the lecture hall as soon as we were done with our first lecture. Qudrah however went to the cafeteria to eat together with her new crush, Mahmud. He was the first child of Justice Salman Wushishi. It was love at first sight, we both met him the day he visited his kid sister in our faculty — she was in Accounting department, also a fresher like us…

Mahmud was a cute guy, dark and very tall. He could be the same height with Yusuf. The day we met, he made it clear that he was interested in Qudrah. I didn’t trust him at first though because I thought it was lust but eventually he proved his trustworthiness to us. Everyday, he would take Qudrah to the cafeteria to feed her for free. I used to follow them too but not often, and whenever I didn’t follow them he would buy something for me when coming back. He was a very nice guy.

While swapping through my phone, deleting some of the trifling contacts in my list I came across Yusuf’s contact. Something told me to delete it but again, something told me not to. I had to debate with my inner self first before finally deciding to leave it, at least for some time. I didn’t know why I also landed at such decision, even his pics I did not delete any of them. I placed them in a single folder and hid them in my secret file manager. Every time I wanted deleting them, I would end up deciding not to. As if it was a magic!

Just as I was done screening my contact list, I swiped to Boomplay and held my earpieces in my ears. My intention was to play a song but before I could do that, I began hearing people screaming from behind. What’s happening? I turned and just then I saw Yusuf fighting with Habib, our course representative. I was astounded, I wondered what brought him and why he was fighting Habib…

People tried to quench the fight but to no avail, Yusuf and Habib refused to stop. I didn’t want to interfere but the moment Yusuf received a punch on his nose and started bleeding, I ran towards them and push Habib away. I had to do that because if I didn’t, then someone might be mortally injured in the end. It wasn’t easy ending the fight, Yusuf was stubborn but the moment I slapped him he composed himself. He wasn’t happy how the fight ended, Habib however was taken away from the scene by a dozen of our colleagues.

Thus, I quickly brought out a tissue from my bag and handed it over to Yusuf for his broken nose. “Take it!”

“Thank you” He said as he collected it. I didn’t enquire what literally happened between him and Habib, I only turned about to leave when he began narrating the story to me. “I was looking for… for… Adnan when I decided to check this hall from the back and just then, I bumped into that a-----e and he started laying insults on me like it was even my fault”

“How I wish you are telling the truth” I uttered as I turned and glanced at him.

“I swear it’s the truth, ask him” He said.

“Not that” I shook my head.

“Okey, what?” He said cleaning the blood in his nostrils with the tissue.

“About looking for Adnan” I said.

“Hmm” He huffed smiling.

His smile made my heart to beat, he was more handsome when smiling. I had to tell myself to leave the scene lest I end up acting stupidly or strangely around.

“We can’t be friends” I said as I turned about leaving when he held my hand.

“Maybe we can” He said and continued. “What if I tell you that Munir is the one behind the fire that took your father’s former cement factory? And also the mole that is providing my sister with all information about your father’s company? Would we then be friends?”

I didn’t know when I stared at him with a puzzled face. “Can you prove all that, please?” I asked with a wrinkled brow.

“Yes” He said releasing my hand. “Meet me tomorrow in Brimstone, he and my sister would be meeting there as usual”

“How can I trust you?” I asked because Brimstone was a very bad place. It was a luxurious hotel filled with bad people.

“Fatimah, you can come with Qudrah or anyone if you trust me not” He uttered.

“Okey then” I said.

Thus, he smiled and bade me goodbye before leaving the hall. His words had touched me to the extent I couldn’t even move an inch after he left. Munir was behind what? I mulled over with my mind filled with different thoughts. If really it was true then Munir had to go!

I went back to the seat I was occupying and just then Qudrah came back with her Mahmud. And yes, they bought me something to eat. It was rice and beans with two pieces of meat in a takeaway. Also, a chilled Coke and a sachet water.
