Amanda: Laura! Is this some kind of joke or what?

Laura: (with a smirked face) joke? I don’t do jokes dear. Ok, maybe not anymore.

Amanda: (frowned) just give me my child (she tried walking close to her but was restrained by one of the men)

Laura: easy babe,don’t be in such a hurry to leave. That is if you would be leaving here alive.

The man at the balcony soon joined them and whispered into her ears before standing behind her. Laura laughed.

Laura: seems you are a very obedient child. But i guess that was your mistake.

She swiftly brought out a gun from her back and pointed it to Jovita’s head. Amanda gasped. Jovita stirred lightly in her arms but didn’t wake up. She felt safe being in the hands of the woman she had grown fond of oblivious of the danger lurking around her. Amanda knew she was a deep sleeper, so she wasn’t suprised seeing her so sound asleep.

Amanda: (with a shaky voice) why are you doing this?

Laura: why, because you have taken everything i ever wanted.

Amanda: what do you mean by everything you ever wanted?

Laura: you really want to know?

Amanda: yes i want to know because i can’t remember taking anything from you or depriving you of what you want.

Laura: really? But you took David from me and then….

Amanda: (interjected) seriously? Laura, is this the reason you had me go through so much misery for two days? You and i know i never dated David. I never even liked him much more dating him, so what is this all about?

Laura: he is just one of the reason i despise you so much. You want to know the real reason?

Amanda: stop beating around the bush and spill it out already. (her hands on her hips)

Laura: Ray.

Amanda: Ray?

Laura: yes Ray. You took Ray from me.

Amanda: (scoffed) i think you need to sleep. Just give me my child and we would talk better when we get home. (she made to move close but stopped in her tracks when Laura pointed the gun at her)

laura: don’t you dare Amanda because i won’t hesitate to blow your brains off.

She handed Jovita to one of the men and stood up to face her. Amanda was scared stiff. She had never seen Laura so angry before. If someone had told her laura was holding in so much anger for her all this while, she would have held a gun and pulled a bullet into such a person’s head. She had been so blind trusting her that she did not see the hatred laura was brooding towards her. But one thing was even more confusing was the fact that she was accusing her of taking Ray from her.

Laura held unto the gun, her fingers resting mildly on the trigger. Amanda swallowed unconciously.

Amanda: laura, please drop the gun, let’s talk, i beg you. Don’t do anything stupid please. (tear brimmed her eyes. Laura was crying now)

laura please.

Laura: you had everything. Absolutely everything you ever wanted, everything. The love and support of your parents, their time , everything.

Laura had grown up without the love and care of her parents. Being an only child, she had everything, but she was lonely. She practically lived all her life with the Daniel’s. It was even worse when her father had died and her mother had blamed her for his death. She had been so angry that day after her parents had forgotten her birthday for consecutive times. She had confronted them and was running upstairs to cry her self out in her room when her father who was running after her, slipped and fell down the stairs, hitting his head hard on the tiled floor. She had lived with that guilt all her life. Her life became a living nightmare when she was raped at 15. It was the worst night of her life. The Daniel’s were there for her during those times but her mom was nowhere to be found and when she finally came around, she offered no support. She grew up emotionally wrecked. The Daniel’s had to employ a psychologist in order to bring her out of her shell which she did but not totally because she became a nerd and an introvert hating the male specie.

She had loved David when they gained admission into the University but he was into Amanda. And even though Amanda had not dated him, she blamed her for ruining her chances of been with him. And then a year after graduating, she had met Ray at a seminar held in Ughelli. Though there had been no exchange of names or contacts or even a physical interaction, she had loved him. But her world crumbled when Ray started dating Amanda 7 months later.

Ray walked through the stairs quietly. He was tired of waiting for the police to arrive when Amanda and his child could be in danger. He listened for the faintest sound of noise and when he heard one, He followed towards that direction, his heart racing loudly.

The family had just arrived with the police. Some took positions outside with the family while the rest moved inside. The were just at the verge of climbing the stairs when the sound of a gunshot was heard.
