The Inauspicious - S01 E07

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 7

The drive home was noisy with Mabel’s unending chatter.

Amanda couldn’t tell if it was what she had grown to become or it was one one of d pregnancy syndromme but what she was sure of is that Mabel had become quite a talkative. She talks about everything but nothing at all, sometimes loud and other times in whispers as if she didn’t want others to hear what she was saying when it was obvious that it was just d three of them in d car.

Amanda: do u always talk this much or it’s just d fact that u are excited seeing me again? (she had an amused look on her face. Mabel frowned)

Mabel: do i really talk too much?

I don’t. (she answered her own question. Amanda laughed) Mum and dad said so, bro. Joel and Jesse said same thing even Michael says i talk too much. Am i really talking much these days?

(her frown was still intact. She turned her eyes from d road to see why Amanda wasn’t replying and noticed she was smiling sheepishly at her)
what? (Amanda laughed)

Amanda: just drive, we will talk when we get home okay. Mabel rolled her eyes and pouted her lips, Amanda chuckled.

The rest of d drive home was in silence, everyone to her own thoughts. While Mabel thought of a way to control her incessant chatter, Amanda thought of Ray. There had not been a day that passed by without her thinking of him. He was one of d reasons why she had come back. She had felt guilty all this while keeping his child away from him. She knew he wronged her but keeping his child away from him wasn’t right either.

She had travelled on her father’s order d day she planned on telling Ray about d pregnancy. Her father was angry, her mother was disappointed so were Joel and Jesse. She was 22 then and an adult too but she knew she was wrong. She was sure that was d last thing her parents wanted from her. The first one month in California was nothing short of hell for her. Her father had made Jesse watchdog over her, not letting her make calls and when she did, Jesse made sure it wasn’t Ray or anyone related to him. Surely she knew her father to be a no-nonsense man but for d first time since age 12, Amanda experienced her father’s anger that day and d months after.

No matter how much she tried to close her heart to that fact, there was no denial that a greater part of her wanted to be with him. she couldn’t forget him either, how could she possibly forget him when his replica lived with her. Staring into those deep blue eyes of her daughter always left memories of Ray in her innermost mind, stamping images of him which are hard to erase.

Her thought were interupted by d car horn. She stared at d gate as it opened and she smiled. She loved d feeling she got as they drove into d compound. She was wowed by what she saw. When Mabel had told her their father did some renovations, she thought it was just re-painting but with what her eyes were seeing, she was sure she had thought wrongly. She was simply speechless as she stared at d new Daniel’s family house, mouth agape

Mabel: you better close ur mouth before a fly enters into it. She said laughing. Amanda joined in. Jovita looked from her mother to her aunt and then to d house and she rolled her eyes; something she had learnt from Amanda.

Amanda stepped down fully from d car before helping Jovita

Jovita: mum is this our house? She asked in her babyish voice. Amanda smiled at her.

Amanda: yes baby, it’s our house

Amanda laid on her bed later in d night with Jovita right beside her snoring away quietly. She fibbled with her phone, her face to d ceiling. She typed a number and dialed it, it rang. She had not expected it to ring and when she heard the voice of d one who had kept her awake and restless most nights, she couldn’t bring herself to reply. She cut d call as tears of guilt welled up in her eyes. She turned her face down and let d pillow soak d tears.

She didn’t want to consider d possibility of Ray being with someone else. She would not be abld to bear seeing Ray with another woman. It would tear her apart, her heart and her whole being. She couldn’t bring herself to ask Mabel either. She cried herself to sleep that night.

Ray stared at his phone and wondered why someone would call and not say anything; very strange. His thoughts drifted to Amanda and he sighed. He wondered if there would be a time when he would meet, see or even hear her voice. He doubt if such a day would come and even if it would, he hoped she wasn’t taken by then.

The thought of her being with someone other than him made his heart ache. He prayed it wouldn’t be so when he finally meet her again and maybe soon too.
