My Campus Life - S01 E25

“Whoo!I’m back”I said tiredly as I tossed my bag on the side stool.

“Mommy!”Ryn,my daughter who’s four years now yelled happily as she came rushing towards me.

“My baby…Aww!I missed you”I said hugging her delightedly.
“And my,what have we got there?”I teased admiring the transparent nightingale that hung around her neck.

“Daddy bought it for me mommy”

“Aww how sweet.Where is he now?Is he sleeping?”

“I think he went out ma’am cause we haven’t seen him.Not since noon”Cherry chipped in handing out a glass of water to me.

“And it’s getting really late now”I said panic stricken.
“I hope he’s alright”I muttered cold.

“Let’s watch tv mommy”Ryn said taking up the remote that laid on the glass table.

“Not now Ryn.Mommy’s really tired and she needs to rest.C’mon now,let’s go play”Cher chipped in again making to carry her.

“Oh no dear.It’s okay”I said to Cheer.

“You wanna watch TV right?Let’s do that then.Mommy’s right here where you need her”I smiled as I switched the tv on with Ryn hopping on my laps joyfully as if it were a horse.
“Now what do you want to watch?”I asked as I searched through.

“Disney!”she yelled with delight flaring her hands in the air.

“Ha!That’s right baby.Disney Jr it is”

“Wait!Hold on baby.Someone’s calling”I said as I took my phone out of my bag as Sophie’s name popped up on the screen.

Sophie?Babe how are you?”

“Trish,Trish have you heard?”she called from the other line with a frightened tone.

“Heard what?”I asked anxiously.

“Baby shh.Mommy’s on the phone”I signalled to my daughter who was busy singing and jumping up with enthusiasm.

“Sorry mommy”she whispered lowly sitting down quietly with her legs crossed.

“Sorry that was Ryn.You were saying?Why are you sounding like this?Did something happen?Is Daphne okay?Are you okay?”I asked simultaneously not letting her talk.

“No one has told you yet Trish?”she cried making goosebumps flush all over my body.

“For Pete’s sake Soph,what’s going on?You’re starting to freak me out here”I said with frightened eyes.

“Merriway’s Plaza is on fire.It’s on the news”she finally voiced out freezing the hell out of me.

“Noooo!!!”I screamed with terror as I let my phone fall to the ground catching everyone by surprise.

“Aunt!Aunt what’s wrong?”

“Yes mommy.What’s wrong?”Ryn chipped in making towards me.

“Y-yeah baby!I’m fine”I smiled slightly as I picked the remote and changed the channel quickly to Ryn’s surprise.

“Awe!I’m still watching that mommy”she said with tearful eyes.

“Just wait baby”

“Tragedy strikes Sydney street as one of the top biggest plazas in Hennsen town is burnt to the ground by a blazing inferno”the headline flashed right before my eyes shaking me vigorously as I stared with tears rolling down my face.

“No!!!It can’t be.Dad’s hard earned money can’t just go like that.Ah-ah!!!”I wailed bitterly as I slumped to the floor holding on to Ryn who had her arms around me as if she understood what was going on.

“Who could have done this?Who could have?Oh no-no-no-no!!!”I cried unendingly as things came crashing before my eyes.

  It’s being almost five months and yet the dreadful incident that’d almost ruined our lives still seemed like something of yesterday.Of course it wasn’t anything to my dad as he accepted the fact that bad things do happen and moved on some weeks later,but for my mum,I can still tell she still feels it even till now.So disheartening!

“Oh!Now what?”I groaned as the alarm clock rang loudly beside me.

“Someone has got to give that clock a slam”I said grudgingly as I stretched my hands towards the stool where it stood looking at me.
“Babe,babe where are you?”I asked as my eyes went to the empty bed space.

“You showering already?”I called as I heard the sound of water rushing in the bathroom.
“Ba…Ah!”I jumped with fright as I felt someone grab me from behind.

“Gotcha!”

“Derek!God!Baby you scared me?What were you doing out there all by yourself?Look at the time,it’s just 5 am in the morning”I muttered under my breath as I ran my hand on my hair.

“Good morning my love”he said sweetly wrapping his arms around me.

“Mh-mm!I really thought it was some Ogre.God!Don’t do that again all right?”I laughed kissing him slightly.

“Mmm!Then this Ogre must be really hot”he teased as he took my lips back again.

“You look cheery today.Spill it!”I said playfully caressing the hairs that stood magnificently on his broad chest.

“Haha!You’re so silly”he laughed tickling me till he got me laughing.

“Derek stop…Oh stop it”I laughed so hard.
“The tap’s still on,you know?”I said wiggling out from him.

“Yeah right.Leave that first.You’re more important”

“Oh I’m flattered.Can I go now?I need to go prepare Ryn for school”

“Awe,not so fast baby”he said pulling me back.
“The bus isn’t coming till 7.So we’ve got plenty of time to make out”he smirked biting my lower lip.

“Not now baby.You know I still need to go to work and not just that,I’ve got some cases I’m working on and I need to leave early.So we can’t do this right now”I said with a shrug pushing him off gently.

“Awe c’mon baby.You’re always saying that.Just like last night,you came back home looking all tired and you said the same thing.In fact,you’re always doing it.When will you ever stop choosing that work of yours over me?”he said indignantly letting go of me as he made towards the door.

“Baby please you have to understand.I’m doing this for us,you know that”I called back hastening towards him.

“For us?Ha!You’re unbelievable”he chuckled maniacally making to face me.
“Because you’ve got the certificate and all huh?You deliberately work yourself out every day so you won’t have to come back home and satisfy me.You think I didn’t notice?Huh?!I can’t believe I married someone like you”he coughed out sending hurting arrows into my chest.

“What?Baby you don’t mean that,do you?”I uttered shockingly as I staring at him with unending pains and hurt.

“Oh,I do mean it all”he barked furiously clenching his teeth in a more scary way.

“You know what Trish,just let me be”he shot back slamming the door roughly.

“Baby I’m sorry.I’m really sorry”I muttered to myself slumping to the flowery-tiled floor with hot tears running down my cheeks.

  It was one dreadful scene and I so wished the ground will open right up and take me with it.It’s all Phil’s fault.He never should have left.He never should have.I weeped endlessly letting the tears soak the pyjamas I had on.

“I miss you Phillip.Please come back.Come back”I cried endlessly as I felt my throat get all sore and dry.

“Hang on.What are you doing Trish.C’mon,get your ass up now.You’re stronger than you know.I know you can beat it girl.Get up!Hurry!”my conscience came countering as I jerked up swiftly on realizing I’ve being crying for long.

“Almost 6!”I gasped looking up at the wall clock that hung above our plasma TV.
“I better head out”I said regaining back my strength as I hurried out,carefully shutting the door so I wouldn’t wake anyone up.

“Mommy?”Ryn called with her usual baby voice tugging at my red PJ’s.

“Where are you going mommy?I want to come with you”she continued dragging her little brown bear with her.

“Baby!Oh c’mere,did I wake you up sweetheart?”I asked concerned as I carried her up.

“No mommy.I heard daddy’s voice again and that got me scared”she sulked as she rubbed her eyes wearily.

“Oh no baby.Daddy and mommy were just talking all right.Where’s Cherry?You shouldn’t be out of bed just yet.Are you sick baby?”I said feeling her forehead.

“Nah-ah”she giggled softly covering her face with her baby palms.

“I snuck out mommy so aunt Cherry won’t yell at me.You should see her mommy.She’s drooling again”she said innocently making me laugh.

“Oh baby.Let’s go downstairs now so we can get you ready for school”

“Oh my!What did you do to your hair?”I teased pulling at her pony tails that wiggled behind.

“Aunt Cherry made it and she also made some icing ginger bread man for me”she giggled again as she told me her story.

“Wooow!Aunt Cherry really did a lot yesterday.

“Mm-hmm!I wanted to show it to you mommy but I’d already slept off when you came home last night.That’s why”

“Awe!Don’t worry baby.I’ll make it up to you all right?I’m sorry I stayed out late.You know mommy’s really busy at work”

“I know mommy”she said soberly.

“You know what?You and mommy will go get some sundaes when you get back from school.How’s that for a start?”

“Yay!I love you mommy”

“And mommy loves you very much”I said as we finally climbed down the last of the staircase.

“Daddy”she yelled excitedly getting down from me as I watched Derek carry her onto his laps.

“Oh hi baby.Whoo!You’re up so early”he said to her not even caring if I was standing right next to him.

“Uh-huh!Mommy said we’re going to go get some ice cream today”she said happily wiggling her tiny legs.

“Really?Mommy’s so sweet”he smiled looking up as I quickly moved my eyes to the wall clock pretending he wasn’t there.

“Uh baby,stay here okay?Let me go get your food ready.I bet Cherry will come tidy you up soon”I said pecking her on her forehead as I rushed off not giving Derek a single glance.

“He deserves it..Humph!Some jerk he is”I breathed turning the cooker on.

“It’s only a matter of time and things will go back to the way it was”I reassured myself holding back my tears.

“Mommy”Ryn called from the back.

“Sit down baby.So you wouldn’t fall”

“No mommy.I’m not sitting”she said stubbornly.

“Hhh!I see!”I laughed softly.
“Baby what did I tell you about talking back at mommy?”

“Oh,I’m sorry mommy.I’m just sad”

“Sad?Awe baby what’s making you sad?Did someone beat you?”

“Not really.Why didn’t daddy come pick me up from school mommy?”

  I don’t blame the little girl though.Whenever Derek was in his right mind,he didn’t mind fetching Ryn from school since her school ride only drops her off at school and not the other way.That’s how I wanted it anyway.

“Oh nothing baby.Daddy’s just busy for now”I said with a faint smile spread across my lips as I focused on the steering.

“Awe,but mommy,daddy’s never busy for me.Did I do something wrong?”she said soberly folding her arms.

“Oh no baby.It’s not that.Daddy just wanted me to go pick you up.That’s all”I lied.

“Okay mommy”she said relaxing back again as she kept mute all through the drive.

“Hhh!It feels really awkward lying to my own daughter.When will this stop?”I yanked inside.

“Baby,guess what?”I said excitedly halting to a stop.

“What?”she asked with her face squeezed in a puff.

“Awe what’s wrong now baby?Aren’t you happy you’re with mommy?”

“I am mommy but I wish daddy was here too”she said soberly rubbing her hands across her face.

“C’mere you.Just know that mommy’s here for you and she’ll always be here for you all right?Now brighten up.Let’s go get you that ice-cream”I said cheering her up as I got her out.

“Stacie?Mommy look.There’s Stacie and Stephanie”she said happily pointing at the two kids that seemed a little older than her.

“Who are they baby?Your classmates?”

“Nope!They’re in third grade but they’re my friends cause I like them and they never fail to pet me”she said childishly as she let go of my hand and ran towards them.

“Baby wait up.Oh this girl”I laughed as I followed closely.

“Ryn!”they yelled happily hugging her.

“Hi girls!I’m Ryn’s mother,What are your names?”I said to them as I held Ryn’s hands.

“Oh hey.I’m Jane.Miss Jane Anderson”a blonde lady that looked thirty stepped out of the car as she walked gracefully towards us.

“Uh,have we met before?”I asked as I tried to fathom out where I’ve seen her.

“Oh no dear.I think not”she said with a nice welcoming accent.
“I see you’ve met my girls.Stacie and Stephanie”

“You’re girls?You said Miss if I could recall”

“You’re quite smart Mrs…”

“Matthews but call me Trish.It’s really a pleasure meeting you Jane”

“Trish?Oh well,The pleasure’s all mine”she said acknowledging my poise manner as we shook hands.
“And to your question Mrs,I’m their aunt”

“Wow!That’s lovely”

“So uh,Mrs Matthews,we’ll best be on our way now.Don’t wanna get caught in traffic”she said chuckling softly.

“Oh sure.But hey,care to join us?”I asked nicely.

“Oh no.Don’t bother.Let’s go now girls”she cut in hurriedly as she ushered the two girls back to the car.

“Humph!How rude”I muttered inside.

“Let’s go baby.Bye Jane”

“Bye Ryn”

“Bye Stacie…Bye Stephanie”Ryn called out to them as we left the car park.

“Now now girls,don’t forget to greet when you get into daddy’s office all right?”Janine said to the twins as she adjusted the bows hooked on their hair.

“Sure aunt”Stacie and Stephanie nodded as they went in.

“Hi dad”they greeted as they took their seats quietly.

“Hi babies.Did you miss me?”Mr Mac said walking towards them.

“Of course we did dad”they replied in unison hugging him.

“You’re barely at home these days and it ain’t fair,you know?”Stephanie chipped in.

“Awe,c’mon baby,you know dad’s got things he’s doing.How was school today?Did you guys have fun?”

“Yes dad.We even saw our friend Ryn at the eatery we went to”Stephanie said.

“And her mother,Mrs Matthews”Stacie cut in.

“Oh you mean Mrs Tri…”Stephanie made to talk but was cut short.

“Oh now now ladies.Enough talking.You need to rest”Janine cut in.

“Oh no.Let them talk sis.I’m listening”he said urging them to talk more.
“So you guys really saw this little friend of yours?”

“Yes daddy.And her mum’s really nice”they both said clinging to each others arms.

“I see”
“Well,that’s all for now girls.You should get some rest just like your aunt Janine said”he said pecking them each.
“I’ll call ma’am Suzan to come pick you both up when we’re done having lunch all right?”

“All right dad.Be safe”they said hugging him as he made to leave.

“Janine do look after them while I’m gone.I don’t want anyone getting hurt,you hear me?”

“Ha!Trust us girls…Good luck”she called out to him as he hurried outside with the door partly closed.
