Hannah And I - S01 E09 (Story Episode)

The week after exam is when new prefects are always chosen. The PREP is the main criteria in choosing the prefects. The assembly is set and all students are on their queues.

‘Time to choose new governors and senators,’ the principal said making everyone to laugh but I didn’t. I wasn’t happy because anyone that has bad record in the school cannot be a prefect. Well, Samuel succeeded in writing my name in the blackbook because he was the one who reported to Mr Newton not Hannah. The principal started calling names and placed a rope indicating their post around their neck. Many names were called and assigned post.

‘Nelson Dorcas,’ Assistant Senior girl.

‘Bassey Hannah,’ Senior girl.

I watched as she marched forward to receive her rope amidst smiles.

‘Now it’s time for the Senior boy and his assistant,’ the Principal continued.

He asked the pupils if they can guess who the two boys are. They mentioned Samuel and I. They guessed Samuel to be the Senior boy and I the assistant senior boy.

‘You are correct, but there’s a slight change.” he said and continued.

‘Adedayo Samuel is the Assistant Senior Boy and Goodness Femi, the Senior Boy of this great school’

Noise filled the air, one could see excitement written all over the students especially juniors. I marched out as if I just won Mr. Africa award. The vice principal place a rope around my neck with ‘Senior boy’ boldly written on the beautiful carving.

The principal then said the senior boy and the senior girl would take pictures which would be erected at the entrance of the school. One thing I didn’t want is taking pictures with Hannah but I had to.

The assembly got dismissed and the students went to their different classes. When I got to class, Tom, the new punctuality prefect was the first person to congratulate me before Jerry, the social prefect did.

As I was celebrating with my friends, Samuel walked to us.

“Phemloid or whatever is your name, I heard you bribe your way through ’cause that post belongs to me and you must step down!” he barked.

“When next you talk to me like that, I will make sure that your yeye assistant senior boy turn to assistant toilet boy, fool” I replied him which made the class laugh.

He walked out and snapped his fingers at me but I knew his threat was as empty as his skull. After he went out, my classmate started hailing me saying I have conquered their Goliath. For the second time that day, Hannah smiled at me which I ignored.

When school closed that day, Hannah walked up to me and congratulated me. She requested to walk home with me but I refused. It surprised her and she thought I haven’t forgiven her. I assured her that she has been forgiven but it’s just that we have to keep our distance so that I wouldn’t put my family in danger. She asked what my family had got to do with walking with me. She got very angry and made to leave but I held her back, drew her close and planted a kiss on her lips which tasted like strawberry.

‘I love you, Hannah’ I finally told her.

‘I love you too,’ she replied and kissed me again.

We resumed walking and I told her we should act like friends for the main time till everything will be fine. She agreed and told me to always come to her house. I felt so happy that day and it was recorded as on of my happiest days.

That day was the beginning of my love life with Hannah. Susan and her family can go to hell!
