Ngozi had packed her bags, ready to take the next available bus to Abuja where she was meant to spend the holidays with her cousins.

She had just returned from a grueling semester at the popular Obafemi Awolowo University where she is a 200level student studying Business Administration as prescribed by her father, Mr Benson who wants her to manage his chain of businesses when he has long retired due to lack of a male child.

Ngozi’s mother, Mrs philomena Benson is just another housewife who got shipped off to marry a rich man, Mr Idigo benson at the very tender age of 16 barely in her ss2, No thanks her poor father who believed women were kitchen materials who had no business being exposed to any form of higher education.

Mrs Benson owned a small store in the shangisha/magodo neighbourhood area of Lagos where they lived.

Her store sold food items at Wholesale prices though she was often home because she had a salesgirl operating for her.

Ngozi had made sure she packed everything she needed because unknown to her parents she planned to stay more than the one month they planned for her in Abuja.

She had secretly visited the popular Balogun market to purchase assorted skimpy wears she would use to paint Abuja Red!!!

At home her parents could have never suspected her of any promscuity as she showed no signs of even knowing what the term “boy” meant. Her parents always counselled her to concentrate on her studies and know her place as the first born of the family and an example for her younger sisters ijeoma and Nneka to follow….

“Ngozika!, ngozikaaaaa!!!” Her mom’s voice rang all the way from the sitting room to the bedroom where ngozi was seated on the edge of the pink bed sheet on bed, in a tighly fitted purple top that hung low to her hips and a black leggings that hugged her burgeoning voluptuousness. She stared up at the dressing mirror intermittently checking her new hairstyle which was barely finished the previous night by her mom’s hairdresser. She chatting with her cousin Nnamdi, who was so eager to see her because they had been very close from childhood and
“maaaaa!!” came the frustrating reply from ngozi. Her mother always found the most annoying way of calling her name and this was no exception.

“what does she want to say now eh?” Ngozi murmured to herself.

Her relationship with her mother had never been one of fairy tales or overflowing mother-daughter affection.

Mrs philomena Benson always found a way to remind her that she, philomena, did not attend higher institution and that Ngozi should always thank the stars for the opportunity whenever she woke up.

“are you done packing?!”
“yesss maa!” Ngozi snapped back, hoping the barrage of questions was over .

She stood up and looked at herself in the mirror one last time. Her chocolate brown skin, was glowing and her face round and fresh, though she normally didn’t apply too much makeup, today! was an exception! She had been watching online videos of makeovers on YouTube ever since the wish to visit Abuja materialised and she vowed to herself she will arrive in the most elegant head-twisting fashion!

So her face today was totally different.
