I woke with a start. D--n my alarm clock! Hurriedly, I hit my hand on the alarm clock’s button and it immediately ceased making the loud eardrum disturbing noise.

I got out of bed, stretched myself and put on my work out attire, which was a white vest, blue bumshort and white snickers.
I checked the time, 6:22 AM.

I grabbed my smartphone, plugged in the headsets and gave my cousin Nancy a call.
“Yes?” said Nancy quietly, her tone was sleepy.

I frowned. “Don’t tell me you are still in bed!”

Nancy let out a snort. “Seriously Cathy? We are going jogging? Again?”
In order to keep my body sexy and in shape, I had adopted a norm of jogging every morning.
“Do you seriously need to ask?” I irritably said. “You should keep that in mind! With that your weight, I doubt Pat will be able to take a second glance at you!”
I knew I had hit the jackpot. Nancy was head over heels for one of the guys at our workplace, Pat. I was the CEO of Chilumba and Family Ltd. A real estate company. And Nancy was my secretary.


“Alright! Alright!” said Nancy briskly, “Am up! You know I’d anything just for Pat to look at me.”
I laughed and said, “You should be ready in five minutes!” I cut the call.
I was climbing down the stairs when I bumped into my twin sister Cynthia, who was climbing up. She was still in her night gown.
“Morning sis.” I enthusiastically said.
Cynthia clicked her tongue and brushed me aside. I toppled over and almost missed my step but for the barricades to which I held on for dear life.

Cynthia climbed up the stairs hurriedly, mumbling something to herself.
That’s Cynthia for you. Since we were kids, Cynthia had had a passionate hatred for me. According to her, I had stolen everything from her, beauty, fame, intelligence and the likes.
I honestly think her excuses were absurd cause she and I were identical but for our skin colour. Cynthia was dark in complexion whilst I was a yellow-bone. To be honest, I even envied her chocolate skin cause I hated being light. The feeling was mutual cause Cynthia envied my skin colour too but the way she was going about all this was utterly wrong. I really wondered how someone could be capable of such hate.

“Yoh Cathy!” yelled Nancy, snapping me from my reverie. “You day dreaming about some dude?” she hit my shoulder playfully.
I honestly found that question insulting as Nancy knew too well I didn’t want to have anything to do with men. Not after what Kelvin had done to me. Kelvin had been my first love to whom I had lost my virginity to. But the guy knocked me pregnant and vanished into thin air.

My parents were devastated and they suggested I abort the child. I had bluntly refused to do so and later gave birth a still-born baby. Since then, men were the last thing on my mind.
“Let’s get going.” I flatly told Nancy and together, we began descending the spiral staircase which led straight to the living room.
“I wonder what issues Cynthia has this morning,” said Nancy, rushing to catch up with me as I approached the last steps, “wished her a good morning and she literally insulted me. That girl needs divine intervention.”

I was about to say something but was cut short by mum who emerged from the kitchen.
“Goodmorning girls.” she enthusiastically said.
“Morning mum.” I replied.
“Morning aunt.” said Nancy.
Mum walked over to where Nancy and I now stood.

“Going jogging, huh?” she asked.
I nodded fervently.
“Am sorry, that will have to wait.” said mum flatly.
I flashed her an incredulous stare.
“And why is that?” I politely asked.
“The lawyer’s coming.” she replied.
“The lawyer?” I asked, brow furrowed. “I thought the meeting was scheduled for tomorrow.”

“It was. But he’s flying out of the country this evening so he phoned me and asked if he could come read us your father’s will this morning. I told him it’s fine by me. He’s on his way as we speak.”
Nancy glanced at her wristwatch and said. “He should really make it fast, Cathy and I have an important issue to tend to. The land courtcase is scheduled for midmorning.”
I slapped my forehead. How could I forget about that!

“Nancy,” said mum softly, “please kindly go up to Cynthia’s room and fetch her. It’s a necessity she attends the reading of the will.”

Nancy scowled. “Am sorry, aunt.” she said at once. “But Cynthia’s in a sour mood as usual. I really don’t want to-”
“Alright! Alright!” mum raised her right hand. “I’ll do it myself!” she added and began to climb up the stairs.
Nancy and I stared at each other, shrugged and went over to the lounge where we both took our seats.

“Are you as nervous as I am?” I asked Nancy, rubbing my sweaty palms together.
We had been waiting for the will to be read since dad had been put to rest a week back and thinking about how dad had divided the property was nerve-racking.
