Finding the hospital wasn’t one easy thing, but eventually, I did after asking several passers-by for the direction.

“God, please keep her safe for me”
I muttered, my heart picking up speed as I entered the entrance and scampered down the hallway. I saw Tola’s mom sitting on the floor wailing and cursing. “Mom, what is it? What happened?” I asked, bending down so that my height was almost the same as hers. Tears streamed down her cheeks freely as she pulled me into an embrace. She was in a very bad state.

Anguish. Agony. Bitterness and whatnot couldn’t describe what the woman felt as she began pulling her hairs from their roots ferociously, tears smoothly finding their ways down her cheeks. Pairs of eyes pitifully watched her wail. Some consoled her while some just looked at her and walked away, carrying their own burdens in their hearts. “Mom, can you tell me what happened please?” I repeated, holding back my tears as I watched the mother of the woman I was in love with cry with all the strengths she could gather.

As if on cue, a doctor started walking down the hallway. I rushed to him and asked him why Tola’s mom was crying.

“Excuse me, are you in any way related to the casualty? Miss Adetola Williams?” The doctor asked, his eyebrows arching up.

My throat dried up and my palms became sweatier as my eyes drilled into the doctor’s. “There’s not much to be afraid of, come with me” he instructed, walking down the dark tan coloured hallway. I looked at Tola’s mom again and shook with fear.

The doctor turned the knob of the door and it opened, revealing a medium sized office with a swivel chair, a desk and a clinic bed. He placed his stethoscope on his table and asked me to sit.
I sat as fast as I could and placed my shaky hands on the table as anxiety coursed through my body, leaving heat everywhere it pathed. “You see, Mr…” He began, clearly fishing for my name.

“Alex” I supplied, my blood rushing to my face as I felt my pulses thickly low in my belly.
