We cooled off our heated bodies on a swim in the beach. We made sand. Castles, collected sea shells, splashed on water on each other and hugged tightly like our lives depended on it.

“Hmm.. Making progress” I muttered for the second time.

When the sun was setting, we sat on the beach and watched it. She sat in front of me with her back leaning on my chest, my legs stretched out on either side of her and my arms wrapped around her.

We didn’t speak but watched the sun sink on the horizon with every inch of our bodies pressed together.

“Welcome to Burj khalifa!” I whispered into her ears. Actually, that was my second time in Burj Khalifa. I had been there when I turned eighteen with my family. We also visited the Eiffel towel and Its environs in Paris. “Oh my goodness. This is Burj Khalifa!” She squeaked. She could hardly the excitement out of her voice as she turned around to take in the whole large view. There were tourists around, with cameras strapped around their necks. We were standing in front of glass windows which overlooked into a vast skyline. She happily lounged against one of the glasses and pulled me closer.

“We’re in ‘At the top’. This is the 124th floor which is the observation deck of the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa!”

“This is so cool! Alex, thanks for bringing me here. I swear I have dreamt of visiting this place ever since I saw the structure in a magazine” she squealed with glee, just like a kid who had just been at an amusement park for the first time. She placed her hands on the window and looked at the amazing view outside.

“Alex, It’s like you’ve been here before” “Oh. Yeah, on my eighteenth birthday, with my family though”

“That explains why you are not as surprised as I am”


“C’mon, am amazed at this view too. Its been more than ten years I’ve been here.” I explained, smiling with her as we looked around.

“Awe Alex, thanks for bringing me here.
Thanks for this birthday tour, thanks for everything. I’ve never been this happy all my life!” She squealed with tears stung in her eyes and before I could stop them from falling, they fell down her cheeks, creating a trail for more to come.

“It’s okay Princess. I just want to make you happy and also to prove to you that as long as you are still the same Tola I fell for, my feelings will never change. I will forever adore you, protect you and be your King. I was destined to love you Tola, I was born to love you” I said with fervor, wiping away her tears.

My heart faltered in my chest and then it seemed to stop and miss a beat when her big doe eyes bored into mine. They seemed to look past my physical appearance and deep into my very soul. “I.. I..” She stammered.

“Shhhhh” I placed a finger on her lips to stop her from saying anything.

“Adetola, look, I’m not saying or doing all these to emotionally blackmail you. Am not doing all these so you can say you love me too or anything. I’m doing all these so that when you finally say it, it will mean a whole lot to you and I.
Okay?” I said, peering at her eyes unwaveringly.
