Soon the footage played on TV and everyone’s attention got riveted. The leader suddenly asked Nitin to replay a section. Soon after he started saying something to Nitin who retaliated strongly. Snigdha tried to understand the Kashmiri the man was speaking. Thereafter followed a heated argument between Nitin, the leader and the man who was interpreting. Before they could react, they were surrounded by the men in guns, and the leader stood up threateningly, and came towards Snigdha, who had till then been standing at the back, not wanting to be close to them.
‘What is going on?’ Snigdha asked Nitin in a fierce whisper as he reached her protectively.
Nitin who had come close to the two girls, said between gritted teeth,’ We have been made a fool. These people are not from Jung-e-Azadi but belong to the deadly Al Faran. JEA must have planned this. They want to destroy one of the interviews saying that the terrorist shown in the footage is now an informer of the police. And they do not want him to be highlighted.’
‘Oh God! Then tell him we will not use his interview!’ Snigdha said under her breath.
‘No. They want us to delete the whole footage. I suggested them exactly what you just said but… ’ Nitin once again tried to reason it out with them by saying the same thing again to the leader. Interpreter relayed the message. The leader’s body tensed with anger and he shouted something, after which there was a major scuffle as two men tried to hold Nitin and Srinavasan by their arms. Suddenly, all hell broke. The men started hitting Nitin and Srinavasan. Lot of shouting started happening. Snigdha could hear feet running towards the hut with men’s loud voices in the background. Heart in her mouth, Snigdha raised her voice and asked them to stop. But before she could see any response something hit her hard on the back of head, making her head reel with pain, and felt sudden blackness envelop her, sounds surrounding her going farther and farther away.

When she opened her eyes, she could see nothing except darkness all around her. She tried to get up but fell down wincing with pain, making her head reel. She realised that her hands and feet were tied with rope. She felt the ground below her body with her feet and could feel hard ground below. Gradually, her eyes adjusted to the darkness, and she could see that she was lying on the ground of a small square room, with just one small window on one side, which had wooden lattices which were closed right now with faint light seeping in. Where was she? Where were the others? Had she been kidnapped by the most fierce, unpopular terrorist group of Kashmir? Had Jung-e-Azadi helped them kidnap her? She had always thought that JEA was a political party and during her research she never got the hint that they would be so closely associated with the terrorist groups. Her head started pounding with pain as the questions started crowding her mind. Her throat felt dry. She needed water. She opened her mouth to shout, when suddenly she heard the door rattling and it was pushed inside to let two people come in. One was a fat, stout woman in a long Phiran, who had a metal plate and a metal tumbler in one hand and a blanket in the other. The other, taller, slimmer figure was of a man standing in the shadows. The woman said something in a hushed voice and crouched down to keep the plate and blanket on the ground beside her feet. Snigdha’s wrists were untied. She sat down on her haunches and rubbed her aching, sore wrists.
