Two hours later, a nurse in blue tunic approached me, “Please Sir, the doctor wants to see you in his office,” she said and smiled.

I took that as good news. I was already feeling a rush of delight as I walked down the hallway and knocked at the door with the inscription ‘Dr. Philip.’

“Please come on in.” said a voice from the inside.

He was already waiting for me.

I entered inside the vast office.

“Please sit down Sir.” He said as he motioned with his hand.

I sat down on a black revolving chair facing him.

“Do you want any drink?”
“No Sir. Thanks.” I said politely.

The doctor quickly stood up and smiled and extended his right hand across the huge desk. “Congratulations Sir, you are now the father of new born baby, a beautiful baby girl.”

A rush of excitement shot through me. I stood up and shook hands with him.

“Really?” I was so happy. Nothing could contain the joy that I felt.

“Yes,” the doctor said matter-of-factly, “the baby was safely delivered. You can now go and see her. We have finished with her Apgar score. The baby is healthy and so full of life.”

“Thank you doctor,” I said. “Please can you show me where my wife and the baby are? This whole place is so confusing to me.” I said happily. I can’t wait to see my complete family.

The doctor paused for a moment, “Sit down Sir,” he said.

“What? Why?” I asked, confused.

I sat down.

“About your wife…” I heard him saying.

“Yes,” I replied as I looked anxiously at him.

“I’m afraid she didn’t make it,” said the doctor as he sank down slowly on his seat.

Time stood still. My whole body trembled, like I was feeling so cold. “What?”
“She was a brave woman. She fought till the end. She was able to deliver the baby safely.

But she suffered from a lot of complications.

She lost a lot of blood. We did everything we can. We lost her,”
I couldn’t believe it. It was as though my heart was ripped into two. A part of me had died. The emotional pain was too much for me to bear. All around me, my world began to tumble.

Samantha.

God why?
Why her?
Tears began to drop from my eyes.

“I want to see her,” I said.

The doctor stood up and we left the office. I tumbled, staggered as I walked. We entered another hallway. He stood in front of a metal door and dragged down the handle. The door opened and we entered inside. There were some nurses inside. The doctor led me to a bed at the extreme end. She was covered in white cloth. I opened it slowly and uncovered her face. Her eyes were closed. She looked so peaceful even in death. I looked at her face and in that instant, I realized that my life has changed forever. I didn’t know when I began to cry. There is a limit to what a man can bear.

Life was so unfair to me.

God why take her away from me?
“Hold him. He is not stable. He may fall,” a voice was shouting.

Some hands held me.

The world suddenly looked meaningless. It no longer seemed bright. All the plans we made;

all the promises. Everything has just fizzled away. God why? I am nothing without her. I was so angry and sad at once. There is nothing that can replace the hole I felt inside of me. How am I going to live without her?
It will not go well with you and Samantha. You will pass through all the pains you put me through.

Zithembe’s words continued to ring in my mind as two nurses led me out of the room.

Soon, I was in another room. I could hear the cry of a baby. The nurse carrying the baby came towards me and handed her to me.

“Daddy is here. Yes!” she was saying, “She is so cute and lovely.”

I carried the baby in my arms. Oh! Samantha.
You were supposed to be here to share this moment with me. I la!d my gaze at the face of the baby. She was so beautiful, so innocent. She smiled and chuckled. Oh! I felt bittersweet. I realized that I was holding in my arms, a new life, a new beginning. Maybe the sun will shine again in my life. There is hope but deep inside my heart, I knew that my life will never remain the same again. I kissed the baby on her forehead as a drop of my tears touched her face.
