Must Read: The Silent Lover - Season 1 - Episode 65

For the next few months, Komal managed to stay busy, although, she found it hard to concentrate.

On the outside, she appeared cheerful and fun loving. But it was only on the outside. She worked alot, played alot and laughed alot, trying to feel the enormous emptiness inside.

Where her heart has been, there seemed to be a big hollow ache. It throbbed through her with a never ending rhythm.

She would close her eyes and picture him as clearly as if he was standing in front of her—–his thick and vital, jet black hair, his bold black eyes, handsome features, glinting with lively interest and fascination. A tear would slide down her cheek, leaving a hot trail to remind her that the pain of losing him hadn’t eased.

Her parents had accepted her once again, forgiving her for her mistake. But she knew they had accepted her as their daughter not as an individual like she had been. Her father initiated her to join her universtiy once again, to pursue her law degree. But it held no charm for Komal now. She remembered well, to be a lawyer was her dream. But she was dreamless now. Someone else had stolen all of her dreams from her.

It was late one night, about 2 a.m, when the telephone rang as Komal was trying her best to get some formal sleep after taking two sleeping pills at a time. She reached out one hand for the reciever.

“Komal?” The masculine voice rang like crystal chimes over the wires.

“It’s me, Sikander….. Sikander Riza.”
With the telephone receiver wedged between her ear and shoulder, she went on yawning.

“I heard you’re back.”
“Yes, I am.”
There was silence on the other side then she heard his sober voice.

“I’m coming to your home this weekend.

Your father wants me to meet you one last time.”
“Why?”
“Same question.” He said shortly. “But if your answer is still the same, like it was before, then, this will be the last time you’ll see me.
I have decided to resign and leave your father’s company.”
Komal didn’t reply.
“What do you think?”
“I don’t know.” The answer was sighed rather than spoken.

“I’ll pick you up at 7 p.m. What do you say?”
She didn’t reply.

“Anyway, see you then.”
Biting her lips, Komal put down the reciever.

What was she going to do? She didn’t know.

Perhaps there was nothing to do. She had no one now, who could wish for her, who could crave for her. She was alone as ever.

“Oh Aariz.” She hid her face in her hands. “Life is so hard without you.
Why did you leave me?”
“No, I didn’t leave you.” His sad face came in front of her eyes from somewhere.

“It was you, who left me. Didn’t you?”
She wiped another tear from her cheek and turned away from his blurring image. With a determined effort, she shook away and fixed a smile on her mouth.

With slow, tired steps, she came to stand near the window, grasping for breath. Slowly, she pushed the dark blue curtains aside and gazed at the star-filled sky.

***********

Sometimes people come across certain events and particular incidents, which give new dimension to their lives. The same happened to Komal when she joined her Universith again.

There was nothing unusual that day.

After attending the last lecture, she was sitting on one of the benches around her Department Garden, gathering her thoughts about the presentation she was going to take next week, when she heard some noises. There was a group of Asain students sitting just behind her bench. At first, she paid no attention, but gradually, their words and voices became interesting.

“I wanted to be a doctor.” It was a male voice. “But my father wanted to see me as a successful lawyer. I accepted his decision.

I compromised, tried, prayed and hoped for the best. The result is in front of you. Now, they count me among the most successful lawyers in London’s Asian Community.”
“Was it a sacrifice?” Some girl asked.

“Not really.” As he spoke, Komal could feel he was smiling. “To become a doctor was a dream of my past. But, I’m one of those who don’t let the past hold them back. Because in doing so, you’re missing the good stuff.

Life’s short, if you don’t look around once in a while, you might miss it.”
“But you had opportunities.”
“Everyone can have. But, remember that opportunities have a reason for knocking on your door.” He murmured. His voice had some mysterious quality in it.

“You always have opportunities.” He went on. “All you need to do is to make the right choice.”
“But that’s not easy. Is it?”
“Well, I must say, it’s not easy.” He let out a long breath. “The hardest thing to learn in life is to decide which bridge to cross and which to burn.”
“Yeah, and that worries us the most.”
“No use of that.” He said urgently. “Worry doesn’t empty tomorrow of sorrow, it empties today of strenght.”
“So, you’re saying that you did a compromise for your career?” Another guy asked.

“I did. At some point of our lives, we all have to compromise, either for or career, for our family, for our marriage or sometimes even for our love.”

“Compromise for love?” The same girl said aloud, her tone filled with disbelief. “But love can’t be compromised.”

“It can be.” He smiled. “Sure it can be compromised. But only for another love.”
“Oh, but isn’t it tough?”

“Yes, it is tough. But not impossible.”
“So, Farina…….” The same mysterious voice asked again. “Have you confessed your love yet or still hesistating?”

“I….. I am not hesitating.” This time, it was another girl’s voice. “I am scared.”
“Scared of what?”
“What if he rejects me?”
“Well, we should not let our fears hold us back from pursuing our hopes.”

“What if he doesn’t like me?”
“What makes you think so?”
“At times, he acts like he’s my enemy or something.”

“Hmmm, even if he is, then love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.”

There was a soft laughter. “Seems like you’re in philosophical mood today.”

“No.” He replied. “It’s just that I am being more open today, more real.”

“Tell me.”
“Hmm?”
“Have you ever denied your feelings for someone because of your fear of rejection was too hard to handle?”
“No. That’s where we need that ‘just do it’ policy the most. I didn’t deny my feelings and simply decided to take a risk. But let me assure you, love is something you can easily take risk for.”
“But it’s just not that.” The girl had said, confused. “I am scared of what if I lose my love? That’s the only thing I have.”
“If you can’t accept losing, you can’t win.” He murmured. “You don’t always have to win, but you do need to know what it takes to be a winner. It’s up to you to find the key that unlocks the door to a more fulfilling life.”

“You won’t believe. Sometimes, the feeling is so intense that he even makes me cry.”

He sighed and then said, “Don’t cry over anyone who won’t cry over you. Cry only, if he really deserves your tears.”

“I don’t think I’ve wasted my tears.” She said huskily. “Is it forbidden to cry in love?”
“Not at all.” His voice was easy, and gentle. “Most teardrops ever shed on this earth has been for love or lack of it. When tears dry, a silent loss sticks to your heart for a long, long time. Loving makes you real. Loving also makes you cry. And that is why a teardrop is also beautiful. Because it is real and it comes from within your heart and your emotion.”

“Alright, I am going to take a chance.” She had said ambitiously. “But I just hope that he won’t take my confession as a lie.”

“No.” He said straightforwardly. “We tell lies when we are afraid…..afraid of what we don’t know, afraid of what others will think, afraid of what will be found out about us.”
“Let go of all emotions such as resentment and retaliation, which diminish you, and hold onto the emotions, such as gratitude and joy, which increase you.”

“But…. I am not so good at expressing myself.”

“Hey, don’t think like that. You’re good, but you’re going to be great. You’re the best, but you’re going to get better.”

Komal was so lost in those beautiful words that she didn’t even realize that she had not seen this wonderful speaker yet. Curious, she turned her head to look behind her and gasped.

The place was empty and silent. There was no one, not a single creature. Komal wondered what just happened.

Had she been dreaming or what?

But it didn’t matter for her now. She had got her answer, a new way, an enlightened path to walk upon.

Turning back, she breathed in the crisp autum air.

“It’s going to be a beautiful day.” She declared on a determinedly clear note.

“Don’t let your past rent a space in your head today. Move forward” She recalled his comment.

“Life is like a bicycle.” She remembered the mysterious man’s last sentence as she got up to leave.

“What?”
“Yeah.” He had laughed. “To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”

And Komal did.
