Aariz closed his eyes, as if trying to digest what Komal had said. “Komal, I don’t have any idea what you are talking about.” He said mindlessly.

“Didn’t you see I was there?” She raised her brows, her voice knife-like, and her tongue scissor-like. “Or were you too indulged in your ‘making-out’ sessions?”
“Komal are you in your senses?” He asked furiously. “We were just…..”
“Having some fun?” She cut in, swallowing the lump in her throat.

“For God’s sake, NO!” For the first time ever, he raised his voice against Komal. “I was just having this terrible headache and she was pressing my head, without even asking me first. I didn’t hear you coming.”
“Oh yes, as you were too involved, shall I say?

To hear me!”She said harsly, looking at him with sharp eyes.
She then jerked her arm away and hurried away from him.

“Hey Komal, wait. Listen, I can explain.” He came forward, trying to block her way.

Pushing him violently aside, she ran out to her car. But before she could open the door, he put his hand on the handle, stopping her.

“Don’t go like this.” He requested in a low voice, his tightened lips showing his inner frustration. “It was her who touched me, not me.”
Tears appeared at the corners of her eyes and she took a white hankie from her purse to dab them away.

“Oh please.” She groaned, jerking open the door to her car, her brown eyes as icy as an arctic front.

“You are incredible, you know that?” She gazed angrily at him. “You twist the truth to suit your purposes, and then expect everybody else to believe it. I knew your wife wasn’t a saint, but without your permission and will, she would never have done what you’re accusing her of.”
Without waiting for his answer, she pushed his hand away from the handle and almost threw herself on the driving seat.

As though from a very great distance, he heard her car backing out of the driveway, moving down the street. At last he heard no sound whatsoever, expect the thudding of his own heart.

As Komal returned to her home and packed her clothes, she couldn’t stop her tears. Pakistan has no more to offer her, she have to go back to London; to her loving parents. She’d never let herself fall in love again. All a man did was hurt you, she thought.

But had he really hurt her? She asked herself.
Her heart said, No, he hadn’t. He was a victim of his fate himself. Someone else had hurt him.

She was carrying her cases into the hall when the entry phone rang. It could only be Aariz, and for a split of second she debated whether to ignore it. Then reason won and she answered, amazed how calm she spoke.

“I don’t know why I came.” He said. “I thought we could talk.”
“Go away Aariz. I don’t want to see you.”
“We can’t part like this.”
“Okay, come on up.” She thought for a moment and then said ironically.

Taking the stairs two at a time, he did, looking anything but the well-grommed man she knew.

“I know how bad you feel.” He began. “But Zeest, means nothing to me…..I swear.”
“I believe you.” Komal gave him a fake smile. “As now I’ve had a chance to cool down. I feel nothing. No anger, no pain. Just relief that I found out in time.”
“You’re lying.” He said bluntly. “You’re only saying that to hurt me. Not that I blame you, in your shoes, I’d have done the same.

But for God’s sake don’t ruin our future because I was a fool. I love you Komal!”
He had made out such a good case for himself that she almost forgave him, almost, but not quite. In his way he probably did love her, but his way could never be hers. Hard it was to walk away from him, it would be harder if she stayed.

“Yeah, that’s why you haven’t divorced her yet.” She gave him a hard look. “What exactly are you waiting for Mr. Aariz?”
“Please…..try and understand me, Zeest.”
“What?” Komal’s breathed stopped. Were her ears not working properly or had he gone completely insane? “You called me Zeest?”
“Oh well… I’m sorry.” Ashamed of himself, he lowered his head. “It just happened in a flow.”
“I understand.” She muttered, giving him a truly wounded smile. “Don’t make anymore excuses.”
“Komal…..we shall sort things out in the morning.”
“There’s nothing left to sort out now. Things have never been so clear.” She laughed in a weird way, flinging a bright red cashmere shawl around her shoulders.

“I know…..I hurt you.”
“Hurt me?” Her voice became unexpectedly loud.

“Don’t insult my feelings Mr. Aariz. Such a small word it is, ‘hurt’!” She hadn’t meant to burst into tears, she had thought she was angry, but she hadn’t realize until that moment just how upset she was.

“Honey.” He called softly as he reached out and softly touched her cheek.

“Don’t touch me.” She blurted. “Your wife deserve your touch now, if you’ve not touched her already.”
“For God’s sake, stop it Komal.” He couldn’t take it anymore.

“I told you, I wouldn’t wait.!” She lashed out with sobbing fury. “And I mean it.”
“What do you mean?”
“I am going back to London.” She announced, without looking at him.

“Don’t go.” He protested, trying hard not to plead with her.

“There’s nothing you can say that will make me change my mind.” She said firmly.

” I should have left before now. I’ve waited too long as it is.”
“Nothing is going to stop me this time. Not even you.” Her eyes were hard points of steel, unwavering.

“You don’t have to leave now.” He was hurt and little angry as he faced her defiantly.

“You can atleast stay long enough to hear what I have to say.” He added.

“It’s all been said.” She shook her head. “Nothing will change.”
“You know I don’t want you to leave, but I’m not going to beg you to stay.” His voice contained the hoarsenss of pain, but it remained steady and forceful.

His throat muscles were so tight he felt as if he was being strangled.

“You’re a type of woman who just wants her own happiness, who is so selfish and just doesn’t care about other’s feelings.”
“Anything else?”
“There’s just one more thing I want to say…..” Aariz blurted out in a weak voice, the bad headache was back again.

“That’s encouraging.” She murmured dryly.
“If you leave now.” His gesture changed unexpectedly, as he threw an aggressive glance at her. “I won’t be waiting for you, if you decide to come back!” His voice was breaking, his control cracking. “I mean it, I won’t wait.”
He waited for her to say something and when she didn’t, he opened the door and stalked out.

Komal left for London early the next morning.

Pain, uncertainty, frustration and fury, these were his feelings which initiated him to take a big step.

Anger rose in him, coiling tightly in his chest. He had to do what was in his mind.

With trembling fingers but fixed ambition, he unlocked one of the lockers in his study and brought out the object of his interest.

It was a modren, silver gray automatic pistol. The weapon was heavy yet stylish.

He then pulled out the magazine from the pistol’s chamber and began to put the bullets inside. Each bullet was shiny, made up of solid steel.

One by one, he loaded all the six bullets in the chamber of the pistol and then with the push of his palm, uploaded the magazine back into the chamber.

It was ready, and so was he.

As he walked slowly towards his bedroom, a dim lamplight shone under the door, and he was sure she was asleep for which he was thankful.

His fingers closed around the handle of the door but he froze.

He was about to commit a crime, one of the greatest crimes. But there was no choice for him.

Cautiously, and silently, he opened his bedroom door and although he was very determined to obey his mind’s command, still, it took all of his courage to step into the dimly lighted room.

Yes, he had made up his mind, and he had to do it right now.

His eyes hardened as he took the pistol out of his pocket. His fingers swiftly unlocked the safety catch.

Now or never, he thought, closing the remaining distance between them.

Reaching near Zeest, he threw one last glance at the woman who was responsible for all of his sufferings.

His finger trembled on the trigger.
