“I wish I can believe you, Yao,” she said tremulously. “I wish I can trust you again…but I can’t! Just called to say goodbye, Yao!”

“Goodbye?” I shouted. “It will never be goodbye between us, Dede! I need you! I haven’t needed any woman in my life, but I do need you! Fu*k love, Dede…because love doesn’t mean sh*t, but I do need you! N-E-E-D!!! Need! Please, I beg of you, come back here, let’s talk! I got drunk on the roof. I’m all alone! The house is too big! Everything about it reminds me of you! If this is love, then I love you, Dede! Please, come back to me, please!”

She was quiet for a long time, and when she finally spoke she was weeping inconsolably.
“I…I’m so…so-sorry, Yao!” she stammered. “I’m at the airport, leaving the country, and I’m not ever coming back! I’m going to Nigeria first to visit an aunt, and after a week I’ll continue to further my education on that scholarship I told you about. Goodbye, Yao.”

“Noooooooo!” I thundered down the phone. “Dedeeeeeee! Nooooooo!”
“Yes, Yao, yes!” she cried. “Oh, how I wish I can believe you! How I wish I can trust you! But I can’t! You hurt me bad! Just remember, pick five women on your list…the five you know are kind enough to forgive you! I wish I were a part, but alas, Nana said I can’t be a part. Yao….”


“Stop it, stop it, stop it, Dede!” I cried in anguish. “Please, don’t do this to me! You want us to get married? Come to me right now and we’ll find a church and get married this night! I need you that much! Dede!”
“Goodbye, Yao!” she groaned and the line went dead!

I screamed with pain and dialled immediately.
Her line was busy.
Frantically, I redialled.
Her phone was switched off!
With a tortured scream I threw my phone into the swimming pool. I crashed my fist into the concrete floor of the roof…and I shuddered with bitterness as wave after wave of unadulterated torture tore through my heart!
