Much to Rachel discomfiture, she soon discovered that sam was right. Davis, withdrawn surly, had little to say throughout the next few hours. And the longer he perched beside her, stony and apparently blind to everything but the monotous country side, the more nervous she became. And the more nervous she became, the more she talked.

”haven’t you noticed something different about me, Mr. Davis?
She studied his profile and waited, wondering, after a moment of continuing silence, if he had even heard her.
Giving the lines a flick that brought up the horse’s ears,Davis eventually shook his head.

“i’m without ma petticoats”
she said.
His head came around only slightly.

The corners of his mouth might have twitched, but she couldn’t be certain.

“yep,”
he said.

“you were absolutely right. You know a wagon train is no place to be wearing such attires. I must have looked a sight to the other. I’m so much cooler too. Are you listening to me Mr. Davis?”

He nodded

“do you like my hat?”
she brushed the tiny brim of her bonnet with her fingertips. ”i had forgotten i brought it along. Is the something wrong Mr. Davis?”
Again he only shook his head.

Sighing she stared out over the countryside, wondering what he found so enthralling about the horizon. The terrain with gray-green tufts of spiky grass and jagged fragments of limestones, appeared no different than it had the last two days.

Since breaking camp she had formulated a plan for getting Davis to open up about his past. She would have to approach the subject very carefully. If he was tomas de bastitas opening such wounds could be very painful to him. Still he must know what a wonderful family the bastitas were. He must know that they still hoped for his return.

FLASH BACK
DAVIS WAS 5 YEARS OLD WHEN HE WAS BEEN SNATCHED AWAY FROM HIS PARENTS BY THE INDIANS, TRAINED TO BE A SERIAL KILLER WITH NO GUILT. UNTILL SOMETHING HAPPENED AND HE WAS BEEN ARRESTED BY THE RANGERS, THEY TOOK HIM TO THE BASTITAS FAMILY BELIEVING THAT HE IS THEIR LOST SON. ALTHO DAVIS LOOKED EXACTLY HIS FATHER. HE HAD HIS EYES LONG AND CUTE DREAMY FACE, HE DENIED THE BASTITAS TELLING THEM HE IS NOT THEIR LOST SON.

THE THING GOING ON NOW IS THAT RACHEL IS TRYING TO MAKE HIM CONFESS THAT HE IS THE BASTITAS LOST SON, COS SHE BELIEVES HE IS THE BASTITAS LOST SON.

THE PRESENT….

Clearing her throat she forced her self to ask, “were you born in texas, Mr Davis?”
he shifted on the wagon seat.

“sam and i were discussing family earlier,” she said a little shakily. After a slight hesitation she added,”the Bastitas family, actually.”

The arm brushing hers tensed. Her heat leaped.

“i think it would be wonderful to have such a large caring and loving family. As an only child i always wished for brothers and sisters. Angelique’s and Alejandro’s sons all seem very close. I can imagine they were very helpful to another while growing up.

Am certain Alejandro and Angelique spent many years of heartache after losing Tomas.

Watching a road runner dart from that of the many towering spanish dagger plants to the dense foliage of the ceniza. Rachel closed her eyes and listened to the jingle of harnesses and the rumble of wagon wheels, why didn’t he say something?.

With her fingers twisting into her skirts, Rachel lifted her chin, and said.[b] ” i think Alejandro de Bastitas is one of the most handsome men i have ever met. So are his sons, for that matter i can certainly understand why Angelique fell so hopelessly in love with him.”

Davis stared at her now. And she didn’t have to look to know it. She could feel it.

“Well i have decided i shall marry a man as handsome,as arogant,as exciting….”

turning her face toward his, she looked up into his blazing blue eyes and finished softly. ”someone like Alejandro de Bastitas”.
His face darkened further, he snapped, ” you should have gone to the Bastitas ranch, looked to me like that one of the Bastitas is ready to court you.”

” huh, Ramon is dreadfully young. I like older men, you see”.

“how much older?”
he demanded

“well, old enough to understand and have learned a little something about the world. A more experienced man.”

“educated?”.
He asked

“not necessarily. My father had no formal education beyond what was taught to him by a tutor. But he was the smartest man i ever knew. He knew everything there was to know about running a plantation and raising cotton. Everyone excels at something.”
she looked at him squarely. ”even you, Mr. Davis.”

“oh yeah?”
his dark brows flared over his eyes as suddenly angry, he mocked. “yeah, i guess i do,i’m real good with a gun miss gregory. As you can see its brought me much success.”

she threw hands im exasperation. ”well, pardon me for attempting to bolster your sadly lacking self-confidence. I have never known anyone who so enjoyed immersing himself in self pity.”

“self pity!”
he boomed it so loudly sam rode up closer to the wagon to take a look.

☆☆

“Exactly! You’ve done nothing but brood over your circumstances all morning.

“i’m not brooding, lady. I’m just fed up listening to your idle feminined chitchat and your attempts to reform me!”

“And i, sir, am growing tired of your acerbities!”

“a-s what?!”

nose to nose, she glared into his piercing eyes and spat, ”acerbities,Mr Davis. If you don’t know the meaning of the word, i suggest you look it up in your dictionary, you do know what a dictionary is…….”
he let out a derisive snort and stared at the horses’ ears.

“well do you?”

“i know what a dictionary is”
“what is it?.”

“its a book with meanings in it.”
“obviously any moron will know that.”

up went his eyebrow again, and he made a nasty little sound with his mouth that might have been meant for the horses _or for her.
Jeromia rode by then. ” D’Hannis dead ahead!” he announced.

“its about time,”
she heard Davis grumble.

They camped outside of town. Not far from St. Dominics Catholic Church and a farmhouse knowned by a pleasant mexican couple who were more than eager to sell the travelers fresh milk and butter and a foul-smelling balm that supposedly did wonders for red bugs and wood tick bites. Rachel bought herself a jar of milk, disappointed to find it was thin and tasted like wild garlic and onions. The butter, she learned was nothing more than congealed animal fat.

Deputy Homer ordered a cow to be slaughtered. For the remainder of the afternoon and early into the night, it roasted over the fire. While the travelers mended their wagons, and soak their water cask in the creek. The evening meal was a feast, wid beef, catfish caught from the creek, deep fried cornbread cakes, and potatoes roasted in the ashes of the fire. Then jeromia played his fiddle and after much deliberation, Homer broke out his crate of whiskey. Eventually most of the men and few women including Audra walked into town into to the saloon. Their raucous laughter could be heard occasionally above the tiny piano that played the same tune over and over:

Buffalo gals won’t you come out tonight?
come out tonight!

Buffalo gals, won’t you come out tonight.

And dance by the light of the moon!

Rachel secretly wished she could join them, but martin had deemed her his responsibilities(Martin stillwell is a rich young gentle man, who has made it his responsibilities to buy every solid and expensive things he could get and keep as his belongings in his possessions. Rachel would have married him if not that he is always paying attentions to his possessions than Rachel and we both know that Davis is the main reason why things are not turning well for Rachel and Martins).

Martin,Rachel decided, was beginning to get on her nerves.

“there is something i wish to discuss with you Rachel,”
he said escorting her back to her wagon.

She wasn’t inclined to listen at the moment. Once again he’d punished her toes abdominably while dancing, and the hour was growing late. But she paused out of politeness.
“as you’ve probably guessed.i’ve grown quite fond of you these last days,”
he continued staring at some point above her head.

Rachel frowned, growing uncomfortable with the tone of his approach. Clasping his hands behind his back, he rocked slightly forward and back on his balls of his feet and said. “i think it would behoove us to marry.”
