“where in asaba?” Philo asked…
“agbor ma”… Came the reply from the shy voice….

Mrs Benson was driving to the atm,
Her car had developed a fault on her way to the island….it was jerking…luckily for her she hadn’t been at top speed, she had slowed down and parked….she was stranded only to be hit with hope as she saw a mechanic shed not too far from her…. She promptly locked the car and took a stroll.
She came back with the mechanic and he had managed to restart the sienna again and drive safely through the jerking engine to his shed…

He had resumed work on the car promptly she was staring around, standing impatiently as engine oil reeked everywhere and street people took a sweaty glance at her….it was a hot afternoon, she was dressed in a light blue cotton blouse and brown flayed skirt on flats….she didn’t care much about fashion….atleast not today anyway….

“Titus!…. Titus!!” The mechanic called out
“saaaa!!!!” came the boyish bass reply.
“bring the size 8 spanner!”
“ok sir” the boy replied….

And in a few seconds he ran out with the tool…
Mrs Benson looked at the boy….

He can’t be more than 14 she said to herself….

He handed his oga the tool and walked back to into the shop where he was busy with what she couldn’t see….

Hmm na wa o….see small boy like this suffering in this life already….chai…thank God o….im settled and made in this life….and then he will now one day want to marry in this kind of situation….she was thinking to herself….

Then she became remorseful for wishing him such a future….

“He shouldn’t be more than nneka’s age na” she said to herself….as she was lost in thoughts….

Her phone rang….

She picked up the phone and looked at the screen it was an unknown number…

She had previously called her husband twice but he did not pick…. She grudgingly picked the call….
“hello?” She anwered apprehensively
“hello mommy”
“eh who is this?”
“mommy its ijeoma”
“and why are you calling me with a strange number?”
“err mommy my battery died, I…”

Mrs Benson cut in….

“why wont your battery die…youths of nowadays always pressing and watching things on the phone”
“haba mommy”
“dont haba me….how are you what is going on dear?, you said you were coming home since, we have not seen you even the other day your number was not going through”
“err yes ma…, but I am on my way now are you at home or in the shop?”

Mrs Benson paused….
“I am nowhere” she replied.

“what’s funny?” Her mom asked.

“my car started doing somehow and I was on my way to the island I had to stop by a mechanic, they are working on the car now…sp when are we expecting you?”
“errr in about two hours time mommy”
“hmm ok o, safe journey have you called your father?”
“no ma, actually yes but he didn’t pick”
“ehhh ok…..see you soon then, be safe”
Mrs Benson relaxed…

“ok ma, bye”
Ijeoma cut the call…

“madam I dun finish o” the mechanic stood smiling in front of her with his brown teeth….
She was disgusted….
“how much” she asked desperate to whip her car onto the road and drive off…
“hehehe madam you know as e dey go na, wetin I do for dis car eh na God just say make e spoil for this side, else another mechanic for dun do anyhow with am”
She was getting impatient.

“oga I dun hear, na how much kwanu?”
He laughed again…

“huh? Six hundred?”

It was getting out of hand, Philo could barely find what was funny about the situation…
