Story: True Life Story Of An Addict

6am in the morning I was up, preparing to go see Deola, for the final time in her house. It was a very high emotional ordeal but I was ready for it mentally, emotionally and, more importantly, physically. Corn Flakes was on menu that morning, and I helped myself with a plate.

Around 6:30am, I called Deola, reminding her of my imminent arrival,

Deola: Good morning Femi. How was the night?

Me: I bless God. Yours?

Deola: Very swift. You know I couldn’t sleep well cos of the joy of seeing you again in my house.

Me: Hmmmm. Is that so?

Deola: Yes sir.

Me: What is with you and this ‘sir’ thing these days sef?

Deola: A woman gives her man all the respect and regard he deserves, not only in his presence. I love you Femi…and I think you deserve it, even more.

Her words pierced my heart! Only if she knew what is about to happen. A part of me wanted to postpone the announcement of the breakup but, there is a voice in me (whether you guys believe me or not) that kept pushing for a breakup. Humanly speaking, the melee between us shouldn’t have been the basis for breakup but sometimes, something plays with something and something else happens (Let those with curious mind unravel that). I waved off the softness of her words. There should be no sign of weakness. What needs to be done should be done…immediately.

Me: That sounds lovely. Anyway, I’ll be there soon.

Deola: Wow! This early?

Me: Yea. I figured I may have to stay longer with you. So, the earlier the better for both of us.

Deola: Thanks Femi. I will be waiting. What should I prepare for you?

Me: Never mind. I just took Corn Flakes.

Deola: I thought you said you’re gonna stay longer.

Me: Yes I said so.

Deola: And you think that Corn Flakes will last you that long? Stop kidding Femi, it won’t. I’ll prepare something solid for you.

Me: Well, it’s your house, your rules right?

Deola: Thank God you still remember that.

Me: No problem. Do what will please you.

Deola: Ok. See you then.

Me: Yea, bye.

Deola truly loves me, but I don’t love her as much as she does love me. I want to give her my full attention but I just couldn’t find the will to do it. Marrying Deola will be fun, lively and ecstatic but one moment of madness can truly ruin a 50yr old plan.

To all the Pro-Deolas, one thing you all should pray against is the spirit of error. Deola committed error where she needed to be calm. This may sound illogical but that’s the truth. If she hadn’t behaved in such a ruthless manner, I wouldn’t have known that she has such a violent spirit in her. Scientifically, we all have our moment of madness every single day. Now I see a whole lot of sense in this saying that,

“He who has conquered himself has conquered the world.”

Each time I imagined us together I feel scared. I feel something terrible might happen. This is beyond just loving someone, it’s about how safe one feels beside such. I used to be safe with her until that fracas happened. It wasn’t a pleasant scenario people.

I arrived her house some minutes before 8am. As usual, the gate was slightly opened for me. I noticed another vehicle aside Deola’s. A black Lincoln Navigator parked about 15 yards away from Deola’s. Many things ran through my mind and I came up with these assumptions as I walked slowly to her apartment:

1. Deola had a male visitor who passed the night with her,

2. She’s got another ride she didn’t tell me about,

3. Someone parked his or her car in her compoud for security reasons,

4. Or, Deola’s neighbour has finally arrived.

Number one option gained a strong footing in my thought. What a never! Dis girl get mind ooo. And she still insist I come? No wonder she axclaimed when I told her of my imminet arrival. God don catch you today. The anger in me grew worse. Today na today, you go hear am,

The height of infidelity,
What else does she want?
A display of promiscuity,
Like “what I have, I flaunt.”

At least show some respect,
A moderate level of decency;
That is what I could dissect,
Signaling the wrong frequency.

A carefree woman,
Loosed like Jezebel;
And you want me to be your man?
Sorry I am not Cain, I am Abel.

Boiling with fury,
I marched like a hungry lion;
Such a life so unruly,
Today na today, keep your opinion.

As I made my way towards her apartment, a deep baritone voice withdrew my steps,

Man: Hello. Who are you?

I turned around and saw a man in his late 40s looking at me suspiciously while watering the flowers. Fear catch me small because the man build well well. Big, tall, with muscular frame. Hope say Deola never plan second beating for me?

Me: Good morning sir. I am here to see Deola.

Man: Is she aware you’re coming?

Me: Yes, she is.

Man: Ok. You may go in. I am her neighbour.

Me: Oh, welcome back sir. I’ve heard a lot about you.

Man: From who?

Me: I mean, Deola told me who you are, what you do and how you hardly stay home because of work.

Man: Yes that true. I came back 2 days ago.

Me: Ok sir. I am Femi by name.

Man: You’re welcome.
