The Doom is an event where all fourteen of Valyria’s volcanoes erupted, burying its people under a torrent of larva and ash. Their moneymakers backfired on them, so too bad. They’re all wiped out. Valyria has to be the most dangerous place in all of the known world because of the volcanoes, many of which are still active, dangerous mutations of plants and wildlife, and great whirlpools in the rivers not unlike quicksand on water.
The continent of Westeros gets its name from its geographical location. Remember when I said it is called that name only by those from outside? That is because Westeros isWestof Essos. Many lands also exist to the East of Essos. One in particular that is of interest is an area called Slaver’s Bay, which cosists of three cities: Astapor, home of the Astapori; Yunkai, home of the Yunkish, and Meereen, home of the Meereenese.

The main source of revenue for these cities is slavery, since they have a flourishing slave trade system. Slavery, by the way, is banned in the seven kingdoms.

Astapor is famous all Essos over for being training grounds for the most elite infantry in all the Known World: The Unsullied. Those Unsullied Daenerys has? She got them from Astapor.

If you haven’t watched or read the series, and you’re wondering who Daenerys or Unsullied are, don’t worry, we will talk about those as we go on.

As for Yunkai. Ruled by the Yunkish Great Masters, Yunkai is the headquarters of slave trade in all of Essos, having as it does the most flourishing slave markets in all of Essos. In Meereen, the great houses reside in pyramids, but the skyline is dominated by one known as the Great Pyramid of Meereen, famous for being Daenerys’ seat during her conquest of Essos.

So. I think that does it for our Tour of The Known World. As you have already seen, many places exist in the Known World, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the story is very voluminous. I write for avid readers, people who chop novels like rice, so it shouldn’t also come as a surprise that all my write-ups are epistle-length. And if you’re thinking, “wow, we’ve talked about alot”, my dear, we haven’t even started anything yet.

This is a very short episode, but in the next episode, we’re going straight into the characters.
