Empire High School - Season 1 - Episode 106

Katherine’s POV
I opened my eyes slowly when I heard a
beeping sound close to my ears. It was my
cellphone! I rubbed my sleepy eyes and sat
up reluctantly. Feeling relieved after the
long awaited WAEC Examination was over.
It ended last two weeks. EHS Ss3 students
were free to do what they wanted. And We
all hoped for Best Results!

Now I had all the time to sleep!

I reached out for my phone and swiped the
screen to unlock it.

A Message from Jeffrey!
“Hey Babe! I hope you know how much
you mean to me! You are quickly
becoming the only one for me! I hope
that I will soon be the only one for you you
too! My Love , I wish I could express
the happiness I have found in spending
time with you over the past few months.
Getting to know you brought a Dimension
to my life that it just never had before.
Every time we are together, the world
looks a little better and Sunshine a little
brighter . I am not exaggerating when I
told you that you are the most amazing
person I have ever met! Because you
have in one way changed the way I see the
world. I am a better person, just because I
have known you. I’m so glad that your love
for humanity matches my own. And I was
serious about you joining the Peace Corp!
Lols! . And ever since our first date, I’ve
noticed changes in my world. Everything
seems easier and even my parents noticed
the changes too. Katie, I get excited at
the thought of spending more time with
you because our time together will help me
learn more about you. Already I’m learning
that we have so much in common. I
enjoyed our differences but I’m happy that
we share so many similar opinions and
experiences. Whatsoever difference exist
can only broaden our horizons and our
Outlook on life. I’ve lost interest in seeing
anyone else, Katie because I love you so
much!

I can’t wait to see you babe! I hope we can
get together today!”

A smile curled on my mouth. A real smile!
My heart melted in happiness at
Jeffrey’s message to me!
I should call him.

I dialed His number and he picked on the
Second ring.
“Hi babe” he greeted
I smiled brightly..like I couldn’t control it. I
was so d--n happy! Its a good feeling to
know that someone loves you! That of kind
of happiness is beyond this world! To love
and be loved!

“I got your message..thanks!” I said
“Do you like it?”
“Of course! And I’m super excited!”
Jeffrey laughed
“I’m glad you like it My love”
“Thanks” I replied
We were silent for some seconds.
I should say something nice to him too.
I needed to tell Him how I feel about him!
So I cleared my throat and began to say.
“You are the best boyfriend and you are my
world. I want to love you for life but if all
this is just one long dream, I don’t mind
sleeping an eternity. You are like a sweet
chocolate to me, no matter where you are I
will always carry you in my heart. I love
you very much”
“I love you too Katie” he said
Excitement in his tone
“Where are you?”
I asked

A knock came on my bedroom door
distracting me from hearing Jeffrey’s
response about his location. I guess he
heard it too cause he stopped talking.
“Kate, are you awake?”
My mom asked popping her head in first.
“Yes mom, do you need anything?”
“No but your dad wants to talk to you” she
responded
“I’ll be right there” I whispered gesturing
to her that I was on phone. My mouth
curled making a low sound “Jeffrey”
She got the message and left.
“Is that mom?” Jeffrey asked
“Yes”

I heard him gasped out on phone.
“Is she there with you now?”
“No she left..Can we talk later please? Dad
wants to see me”

“Okay”
“I’ll call you” I said
“I’ll be expecting”
The line dropped on the other end. I moved
out of my room to the sitting room.
“Dad”
“Yes dear” he looked up from his cellphone.

“Mom said -”
“Oh! Yes! I asked her to call you” My dad
interrupted.
“Where is mom?”
“She’s in her bedroom. Please sit down we
need to talk”
“Okay”
I settled beside him and his arm came
around my shoulder.

“What are your plans now that you are
done with your examinations?” Dad asked
toying with my right fingers. My head
rested on his chest.

“I’m waiting for my result” I shrugged
“Or..Any plans for me?” I asked him
“Yes..”

“Which is?”
“For you to leave the country and study
abroad” he said
What?!

I raised my head to look at him.
Leave the country?!

“Why?!” I questioned in surprise.
My dad arched his brows
“Why? That’s our plans for each of you” he
answered
Referring to my brothers.

None of my brothers studied in Nigeria. My
parents thinks Nigeria higher education
system is biased and not good enough.

This can’t be happening! Studying abroad
means..I would have to be apart from
Jeffrey! No!

“I want to study here in Nigeria dad” I
countered
He gave me a surprised look
I know why he gave me such look. I’ve
always insisted in studying abroad like my
brothers just to be free from dad’s
strictness and rules. But things are pretty
different now! Jeffrey is in the picture, and
I want to be with him!

I held his hands.

“Dad, please don’t send me abroad” I
pleaded at the verge of tears.
He stared intently at me.
“Please dad..I beg you”
He cleared his thorat
“I’m sorry Kate, I already prepared your
papers and your brother in Manchester will
help you into one of the universities there”
He said cupping my face in his hands.
“And you’ll be able to fulfill your dream of
becoming a Lawyer!” He smiled at me
He seem excited about this whole traveling
out thing. I was unhappy! Because i knew
there was no arguing with him since my
papers are ready.
“Okay?”
I managed to nod before standing up. I
motioned towards my room feeling
extremely sad.

I was really going to leave Nigeria? And be
away from Jeffrey?

I don’t want to leave but I have no other
option than to leave. And I can’t explain
anything to dad. He would be so mad at
me if he finds out I don’t want to study
abroad and get the best education because
I’m in love with a boy.

Minutes passed and a knock sounded on
my door. I knew it was my mom.
“Come in”
She popped her head in.
“Can I come in?” She asked
I nodded and she stepped in.
“I’m sorry” she mumbled when she got to
my bed.

“Why didn’t you tell me before now?” I
asked
Blinking back tears that threatened to spill
anytime soon. She knew dad’s plan and she
didn’t tell me about it.

“Your dad asked me to keep it a secret.
Actually, he wanted it to be a surprise since
you’ve always wanted to join your brother
abroad”
She explained

“A surprise? Mom I don’t like this sort of
surprise. I don’t want to leave”
She sat on my bed.

“Is it because of Jeffrey?” She asked
I looked away from her, slow tears burned
down my cheeks.
“Kate, we want the best for you”
I nodded in agreement
“I’m not in support of you neglecting your
studies because of a boy”
I looked at her

“I know..But can’t I just study here?”
“No your dad wants you to study in the
University of Manchester”

Oh! I was traveling to UK. It was the same
university our first born attended. And he’s
currently a lecturer in the university.
“Can’t you talk to dad?”
She shook her head
“Trust me, I tried to talk him out of
sending you abroad but his mind is made
up”

I Buried my face in my palms.
“What do I do about Jeffrey?”
It pains me to be apart from him.
“You can tell him about it” My mom said
“No” I whispered

Telling him means we do have to break up.
No! I don’t want to break up! And I hate
goodbyes!

“So are you planning on keeping a long-
distance relationship?” She asked again
I wouldn’t do that either! Maybe I don’t
know!

“No”
“You can’t leave without telling him
anything!” My mom said
“When am I leaving?”
“27th of July”
“What? on graduation day?!”
I exclaimed

“Yes”
“What?! so fast?!”
I said with a wide eye
Valedictory service is in two weeks time! So
I have just 14days to spend with Jeffrey!
“Yes” she answered

This is going to be hard on me..and us.
Jeffrey won’t be happy if I break the news
to him.

Breaking up would definitely hurt him too.
And I don’t want to see him unhappy! I
don’t want our relationship to end in
choas.

What do I do?
My mom pulled me in for a hug. She held
me tightly and I sobbed in her chest.
What would you do if you were in Kate’s
position?

You don’t want to break up
You don’t like saying goodbyes
And you don’t want to explain things so
your partner won’t be unhappy.
So what other way?!
